Beatty's arm from 2003
 

Does anyone know how Beatty (Team Hammond, 71) made their telescoping arm extend? I saw it so many times, but I never really looked into how it worked, and now, of course, I'm interested :p

I might get evil looks for releasing "secrets," but it's not like someone couldn't have seen in the pit any told you anyway.

They had a string that they pulled. If you attach the string to inside of the front of the smallest, then run the string through the tube to the back the up the next tube and have it go through a loop in the front and then back and up the next... Basically you make it so the string is nice and long in there and then you shorten it and the thing that and shorten is the distance between the loop and the back of the tube. I'm almost sure this is how they did it (memory is foggy). Either way, this method would work.

I would like to clarify the language I used above. This seems to imply that I had some sort of special discression about the design in 2003. I will neither confirm or deny that. However, I would like to clarify: I meant that anyone else could have seen it in the pit, just as I did. I have pictures of the robot from the pits in Evanston and I took a close look at that time to discover how the arm worked. If this is a violation of team secrecy, I would like someone to make a clear arguement as to why. I believe it is truly irrelevant that I have been on Team Hammond before. Anyone can go to those pits and anyone can join these forums.
