Longest Word In English Dictionary

Antidisestablishmentarianism is not the longest word

Believe it not (which I honestly don't), the longest word in the English dictionary is 1,913 letters long.

My thoughts exactly when I first say it.

After my friend looked it up, he asked the teacher to say it, it was pretty funny.

Heh. After the bell rang to end class, the other teacher that owns the room (short story, non-relivant though), the teacher I have, my friend, & me had a discussion on how many pages it would cover. We never came to an ingreement.

Re: Longest Word In English Dictionary

I think in german its standard practice to string words together to make a new word for a new creation or invention

I get the feeling that this 'word' you quoted is really a chemical equation 'spelled out'

in which case, if you spelled out the contents of a strand of DNA, I dont think there is enough paper on earth to print it

but I wouldnt consider it a word either :c)

I'm not a big fan of calling that a word... frankly I don't feel that a chemical formula for something can be a called a word. its like taking the sorce code from a program (that isn't yet compiled) and calling it "the program" I'm sure the protine has a common name, at least for chemists... my other check for "is it a word" is if you can use it in a sentance. in the case of antidisestablishmentarianism (arguably PROantidisestablishmentarianism) it could be used to explain a stance, while with methionylglutaminylarginyltyrosylglutamylserylleuc ylphenylalanylalanylglutaminylleucyllysylglutamyla rginyllysylglutamylglycylalanylphenylalanylvalylpr olylphenylalanylvalylthreonylleucylglycylaspartylp rolylglycylisoleucylglutamylglutaminylserylleucyll ysylisoleucylaspartylthreonylleucylisoleucylglutam ylalanylglycylalanylaspartylalanylleucylglutamylle ucylglycylisoleucylprolylphenylalanylserylaspartyl prolylleucylalanylaspartylglycylprolylthreonylisol eucylglutaminylaspfraginylalanylthreonylleucylargi nylalanylphenylalanylalanylalanylglycylvalylthreon ylprolylalanylglutaminylcysteinylphenylalanylgluta mylmethionylleucylalanylleucylisoleucylargin ylglutaminyllysylhistidylprolylthreonylisoleucylpr olylisoleucylglycylleucylleucylmethionyltyrosylala nylasparaginylleucylvalylphenylalanylasparaginylly sylglycylisoleucylaspartylglutamylphenylalanyltyro sylalanylglutaminylcysteinylglutamyllysylvalylglyc ylvalylaspartylserylvalylleucylvalylalanylaspartyl valylprolylvalylglutaminylglutamylserylalanylproly lphenylalanylarginylglutaminylalanylalanylleucylar ginylhistidylasparaginylvalylalanylprolylisoleucyl phenylalanylisoleucylcysteinylprolylprolylaspartyl alanylaspartylaspartylaspartylleucylleucylarginylg lutaminylisoleucylalanylseryltyrosylglycylarginylg lycyltyrosylthreonyltyrosylleucylleucylserylarginy lalanylglycylvalylthreonylglycylalanylglutamylaspa raginylarginylalanylalanylleucylprolylleucylaspara ginylhistidylleucylvalylalanyllysylleucyllysylglut amyltyrosylasparaginylalanylalanylprolylprolylleuc ylglutaminylglycylphenylalanylglycylisoleucylseryl alanylprolylaspartylglutaminylvalyllysylalanylalan ylisoleucylaspartylalanylglycylalanylalanylglycyla lanylisoleucylserylglycylserylalanylisoleucylvalyl lysylisoleucylisoleucylglutamylglutaminylhistidyla sparaginylisoleucylglutamylprolylglutamyllysylmeth ionylleucylalanylalanylleucyllysylvalylphenylalany lvalylglutaminylprolylmethionyllysylalanylalanylth reonylarginylserine there is no way I can use it in a sentance. it cant even be vocalized. How can you vocalize "...ylglycy..." unless your simple text? I'd still like to say that "HIRSCHSPRUNG'S DISEASE" still has the records for most consonants between two vowels.

sigh...i wonder why people "invented" such long words if they can't even be used cuz people can't pronounce them...

I thought this discussion popped up here before? Anyways, you cant really count that. Show me somewhere where someone has used it, said it, or written it (besides sites defining it as the longest word). For all practical purposes thats not a word. But I guess we're all technical people around here :D
