Magic

I've noticed a growing trend in my team. Every time I turn around there are more members who play Magic: the Gathering. Could this be a 'FIRST thing' that is spreading, or are we just an anomoly? If we aren't alone I was thinking of setting up a fairly large tournament (unsanctioned, unofficial-unless someone has DCI/Wizards connections) during wither the EMU Regional (in my hometown) or even at the West Michigan Regional. It would give FIRSTers another reason to get together and have a good time. Just a thought, anyone planning on attending these regionals let me know what you think

I've started to notice that some of the younger ones are playing that game. Actually apparently it died and then its starting to work its way back. I remember back in 7th and 8th grade a lot of people played it, but once I got to high school the number dropped a lot. Whats next, an increase in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons again?

Re: Magic

There's good money in it for the professionals. At the tournamnet in Amsterdam the winner recieved $30K. On our team the younger ones tend to struggle with the concepts of the game, but the lder are rather good...and yes D&D is making a comeback...games are still held once a week at the library near my house, and lots of people tend to show up :)

If you search, you'll find that there are quite a few people in FIRSt that play. Most people from my school have quit in the past few years, however, as rules continued to get more and more complicated.

:) I love Chick Tracts. :P

Anyways, I never got into Magic but I know a lot of people who sold their cards for quite a bit of money after it lost it's thing and now really regret it now (either because they could play again or sell their cards for even MORE money). I'm a D&D fan, myself :)

that actually sounds really cool if we could get powers like that in real life :)

I was into Magic for a while but I lost all of my cards so that ended it for me.

hehe... at my school it's (*shudder*) Yu-Gi-Oh. Though I still hear about D&D games that people on my team have. They've even (*gasp!*) skipped robotics for it! And scarily enough, there is a place in my local mall that still has space open for Pokemon card gamers!
:yikes:

Just about any card game or board game you can think of I play it except Pokemon witch I played in like fifth grade.
But any way Magic is my favorite and I've played about three years now.

Re: Magic

Magic... I remember that game... atleast until it was banned in my middle school =(

Was cleaning my room the other day and found my old 3rd ed. Badlands (dual land) and Lord of the Pit, as well as unopened Chronicles and Fifth Ed. boosters. If I search long and hard, I just might be able to find my whole box of cards.

Man, that sure was the biggest money sink I've ever done... what was it, $8 for a booster, $20 for a starter? Bah!

Kerry547 22-01-2004 19:45

Re: Magic

Wow you played a while ago they already have released 8 edition and more.

Kerry547 22-01-2004 19:49

Re: Magic

Does Stokely still play Magic?

I remember when our whole team drove down to LA for the LA Regional in 2001. We had planned to stop at certain rest areas for breaks. When at the first of these breaks, a bunch of us were in the convenience store, and we noticed that we were missing a few of our number. We went outside to find them huddled in the back of one of our pickup trucks, playing Magic. Everyone found it funny that they were playing Magic in the bed of a truck, in relatively (we're in California) weather, in the dark.

8th, wow, its been awhile... I started playing with a friend back in 3rd grade, which would have been in 1993, I think. Holy cow man, that was 11 years ago. :ahh:

This age thing is weird, it was only last week that I realized that I'll be 21 next year, and that made me feel really old.

Re: Magic

Yeah, but not only 8th it came out a few months ago. They already have another set out called Mirriodin. They are releasing the sets quicker I think they are going to try to release a new set every two months.

I played Magic at one point.. I had an unbeatable Plains/Swamp deck :) I can't even remember how many cards I had that would just instantly take life away ^_^

And what was the deal with the Black Lotus card??

Kerry547 26-01-2004 17:32

Re: Magic

I not sure everyone said it was really good and rare but I've seen it it's not that good there are a lot better cards out there, but for some reason they banned Black Lotus. I also have a great deck composed of all legendary type creatures and legendary artifacts.

Re: Magic

There's like 15 people on our team that play, we're going to EMU, but not western. PM me or email me if you want to set something up.

Hey, what's wrong with D&D?!? *looks hurt* Personally I think D&D is a great game for the adventurous mind. Heck, I still play it on Monday nights. *get's dreamy expression on face...* And if you really need something to put down, you might want to take a serious look at EverQuest. :)

I love D&D I have not played it long but I like it anyway. ;)

Re: Magic

Actually, I play Magic- a few of the members on my team do, also. Dungeons and Dragons, however, I play less than Magic. The reason being: I'm a DM, so I don't get to play quite so often. *laughs*

I was actually planning to promote a small campaign during one of the regionals or maybe the nationals, you know, a small, quick two hour thing, after the day has ended. Problem is, I don't know how many people would want to do it- the other problem is the fact of where we would meet...

I'd hate to lug around my DM guide all the way to Georgia for nothing.

Well if you could find a place I woukd try pretty hard to go.

When it comes to stuff like that our school goes with trends... right now we've hit Magic's 32nd wave or so.

Eventually it'll die out and we'll switch to some other card game. Maybe the CCS card game... I can only hope. ^_^

Wow...well, I cannot say that our school has had that many phases, it simply never went out of style. DnD, however, is a dying art...

Re: Magic

At an extended tournament last year, there were decks capable of the following.
Turn 1: Play Antient Tomb and tap it to play Lightning Greaves.
Turn 2: Play Seat of the Synod, then tap it and the Tomb to play Tinker sacing the Seat and searching for Metal Worker. Equip the Worker with Lighting Greaves so you can activate it's ability revealing 4 artifacts adding 8 mana to your mana pool to play Bosh, Iron Golem. Equip Bosh with Geaves and attack for 6.
Turn 3: Play a moutain, attack with Bosh for six, then sac him to his own ability to deal eight damage to your opponent.
6+6+8=20 damage
With a limited card pool, players could win as early as turn 3.
That's why Black Lotus is so powerful. It gives you three free mana, making early game wins much easier. Before it and the other Power Nine cards were restricted, there were decks that could consistently win on the first turn.

Wow, there's so much jargon up there it's not even funny. Does anyone else understand this post? Or am I the only one who's life outside of FIRST(as small as it is) revolve around magic?

CCS= Cardcaptor Sakura

Re: Magic

Yeah. CCS (or CardCapture Sakura) is an anime that was brought to the US recently. Here they renamed it *Cardcaptures*. But anyways now back to the original topic. If there is anyone that still plays D&D, I'm curious to find out what kind of characters you have.
