FIRSTweb
Hey~
Alright all.. I doing a little poll here to find out if it would be worth my time to set up these services and to see how much they would be used. These services could be used for anything FIRST related. 1)FTP/Web File sharing/storeing. This could be used for a number of things includeing: Sharing of Inventor Files, an offsite storage for 3ds Max animations, other file storage, etc.. The ammount of storage would be based on need and virtually (note the virtually) uncapped. ;) If only ftp access is granted, your files will only be accessable to you. 2)Website Hosting. This could be used to host FIRST web pages either for a team or a FIRST related project. Features include PHP Scripting, MySQL DB's, FTP/SSH access. Again, the bandwidth & storage would be granted on need, etc.. 3)Almost anything else that requires a web server :p -- The web server that would be used is a dedicated server (used for the failing FSN) running Red Hat, and hosted by VO (The same host as CD) I just want to see if people think they actually would use these services before i take the time to aquire domains, and spend any more time setting things up. Thanks, Jack |
Re: FIRSTweb
Great idea. I wouldn't use it, cause we set up our own server, but I'm sure it would be very much appreciated.
Inspiration Inc--particularly Leon Machado, dunno if you know him or not--might be interested, since they're in a continuous dialogue with my team about things like this. I dunno. It's late and I'm tired. Thanks for offering to do something like this. --Petey |
Re: FIRSTweb
note to Petey - this is not a good thing to have your team's page displaying:
Code:
Warning: main(../pm/inc.sfx.inc): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /web/www.theforceteam.com/web/pm_inc.php on line 26 |
Re: FIRSTweb
What kind of speed could you have on this server/bandwidth limitations. Sounds expensive. But it'd be nice to have a place to put our small animations up for the others to see without limiting them to 40kbs down because we can only match it with 40kbs up.

Re: FIRSTweb
ick... ASP... :) j/k
PHP support would be nice too. |
Re: FIRSTweb
If its the server I think he's talking about .. it has mysql and php; I dont think it has asp or any other windows/IIS-based languages.

Re: FIRSTweb
Down with ASP! Oh, and DeltaCoder, he did mention in his original post that PHP was on their, so uncross your fingers :). Oh, and can I get first dibs since I was one of the first to respond to your poll/post?

Re: FIRSTweb
After Sun's clash with Microsoft over distributing their VM of Java with Windows, I wonder how long it will be before Microsoft goes after this in reply. Or maybe it's licensed? Or maybe Microsoft is too tied up with Mike Rowe Soft? I just asked a bunch of questions that have no business being here. Everyone give me negative feedback.

Re: FIRSTweb
There's also Chili!ASP which is a commercial ASP package for Linux...
but back to the topic at hand. This would be an awesome resource for teams without much of a tech budget. We have a really nice setup already, but if we didn't we would probably use it. |

Re: FIRSTweb
I think I know what you are saying, but PHP is a bad example. It's open source!

Re: FIRSTweb
yes, but technically so is the ASP language - it's only the compiler/vm/interpreter that can be copyrighted - for instance, NSBasic is essentially VB, except it's designed for Palm platforms - the syntax is almost the same. languages aren't copyrighted, software/code is.
