It won't look like glass if it's not two-sided and there's no real reason for it to be unless you want it like glass.

It should work, ive just had the same problem where i wanted something to go invisible for a couple frames and because i had raytrace applied to the material, it reflected the lights and objects around it before it as it dissapeared. i solved the problem by adjusting the visibility of the object. but, yes, im most circumstances, there should be not problem.
