Van Door Motor Drawings
 

Does anyone have CAD dimensional drawings of the Van Door Motor? I've searched on the internet and Bosch's website with no luck :ahh:

I know about the first cad library drawings, but are those drawn to scale? I was thinking more along the lines of company drawings from bosch, but maybe the first cad library will have to do.

The files from FIRSTcadlibrary should be pretty accurate, I know that Ed Sparks makes all of his models, and does not accept models from other people just so he can keep his high standards. It should be easy to take one of those models and throw it into Inventor (or something) and dimension it.

I've used the first cad library model in our solid models of the robot for the past couple of years. When we compare the design to the real thing, they match up pretty well.

BTW the Inventor Van Door model in the FIRST CAD Library does NOT match the motor we were given this year perfectly. The bolt holes and output shaft are correct but many of the other exterior details are not.

In many cases, what is there is "good enough". But if you are planning for a tight fit (like I am) you should be aware there is a difference. A manual check with the real motor is in order.

It looks like the FIRST CAD Library drawing (01/24/04 version) is recycled from a previous year's motor. That's fine most of the time and 90% of people probably won't notice the difference. Personally, I'm using the FIRST CAD 2003 model and making allowances for known differences. The biggest one for me is the flange around where the motor meets the gearbox that is not in the model. None of the other differences are likely to cause an interference issue for me so I can ignore them.

I am VERY apreciative of having ANY sort of model ready made, at least as a starting point. Especially on something as complex to draw as the Van Door motor. But we got burned big time last year when I didn't notice an interference in the CAD model of our robot.(I didn't even spot it until this year!, and here I spent all year thinking there was an inaccuracy in the model. My apologies Ed!). So I'm a little paranoid about checking the conformance between the CAD model and real life.

FIRST CAD Library is a valuable resource and would be greatly missed if it wasn't there. But nothing made by man is ever perfect and this is one of those minor imperfections.

Yes, that motor needs an update ......

Ed,

At this point I would concentrate on what your team/family needs from you. That model is close enough as long as people are aware that it is not up to your usual standards. Even that isn't your fault, it is accurate, just for a different year. We'll survive, just make sure you do too.

This may be a bit off topic, so if it's too far off for this thread, then don't bother answering me.
We too are using the Van Door motor this year, to power an arm. I'm using the actual motor for reference since I can't run our CAD packet yet. But I would like some suggestions as to how I can connect the output shaft of the motor onto something, aluminum extrusion, for example. PM me if you can help, I don't want to turn this thread around.
