A Question of Interpretation

Say one was manuvering a robot into opponent territory, and opponents decided to target one's robot (or large ball being held by robot, or the area around it) with their small balls. Would that be considered goaltending?

For efficiency's sake, please limit your replies to an answer that addresses the question, and explanation of that answer. I'm sure the moderators are tired of seeing debates about the nature of FIRST come up in these threads, and i'd appreciate it if the answer i recieved was to the point.

Re: A Question of Interpretation of goaltending

Goaltending is specifically defined as interfering with a small ball on its downward flight toward or within a goal. If they start heaving balls at your robot and it is not between them and the goal on the downward path of the balls, no problem. It's not goaltending.

I can foresee issues if the HPs start targeting a robot in the process of capping a goal. However, I doubt if they will nail you if you get in the way of your own HPs. And, if you are capping the opposing alliance's goal for them, you merely cease capping their goal for them since the small balls with which they are targeting you will have been given double points (which is why you were capping their goal for them in the first place).

I think the below is from the NBA definition :)

Goaltending -
Goaltending is a violation where a defender tries to BLOCK the ball from going into the BASKET, but the ball was on it's way down. It can also mean interferring with the ball when it's on the rim of the BASKET. If goal tending is called against the defensive team, then the offensive team automatically gets the points for the SHOT, regardless if it would go in or not. But when goaltending is called on the offensive team, the shot doesn't count and the other team gets to inbound the ball.

Re: A Question of Interpretation of goaltending

If the judges decided that a ball had a resonable chance to go into the goal but it hit your robot/big ball being carried/capping, then penatly.

If the ball wasn't headed in, then no penalty.

Judges decisions are final.
Thank them for volunteering several long days.
