It looks like some type of hopper device.

just a wild guess, but I think it's something other than what will be the robot....

When you say that it's stainless steel.. it better not be going on your robot unless it's a battlebot in the super-heavy weight division. :p It looks to be a human capturing device of sorts...

It looks like a device to open up and herd lots of balls... What confuses me is why it'd me made out of stainless steel. Must be quite heavy.

But freshmen jail is a good use too.

Where did he say it's made of stainless steel? Wayne just used the word 'stainless'.

Where teasers are involved, it's best not to assign prejudices and assumptions because that's what makes your guesses wrong.

Joe Ross 07-02-2004 23:16

Re: Teaser pic from team 25

Not only would it be too heavy in stainless steel, but I think based on that person's arm positions that it is wider then 3 feet.

That's the cage you keep the new robot in to keep it from eating small children and livestock in the dead of night :D What sort of Evil Volcano Magic have you used to create this year's Machine? You didn't sacrifice Big Mike, did you? Poor Mike ...... atleast he will be warm inside the Volcano, it is so cold this year.

Re: Teaser pic from team 25

Considering it is big and stainless, I don't think it does anything on a FIRST robot. However, I could be wrong.

I think it's typically understood that stainless steel is the only common material that you can call "stainless". Actually.. why would any robot have anything stainless? Is there a chemical bath spray that someone didn't tell me about! :ahh:

Actually, the bent pipe, the welding, and the dark(er) grey color make me assume it's some sort of steel. I'd be surprised if it were a robot part. :)

Matt

I don't think it's an inappropriate assumption -- I'm just pointing out that it's an assumption. It may be an assumption they're counting on us to make.

Maybe it's just stainless in the sense that it doesn't yet have robot blood spattered all over it...yet.

Looks big enough to hold big ball(s), small balls, maybe even big enough to grab a whole moveable goal? How about squeezing closed any of the goals to prevent allowance of the balls.

Pretty darn 'robust' . :)

Big Mike still lives.Below is a picture of him playing with an old prototype in the shop this week. But even he can't resist the pictured device. Your hypothesis is pretty good- the device does stop the machine from eating small children. BTW- those two halves of the structure pivot on axes with sensors and can open into a w-shape. And we didn't get any stains on it.....

;)

w-shape huh? well since you have looked at it moving vertically one role it may be used for is trying to block the horizontal bar, but i don't believe that is nearly all it will be used for.....the nature of the curved shape could probably do a bunch of things for you, but I will just wait and see if my ideas are correct....nice job

based on its size and shape

I think its your robots rib cage

and the bot itself must be at least 30 feet tall :ahh:

time for you guys to stop what you are doing and read the manual (rules)

FIRST doesnt have an 'unlimited' class!

They should. We would see some amazing machines.

Stainless doesn't always imply heavy...

There are a lot of thin wall stainless tubes there. You can easily find them in 1.5 OD with .035 walls. These tubes would be strong like bull but only weigh about 1/2 lbs per foot.

Steel is basically 3 times heavy, but it is also 3 times stiffer and 3 times as high of a yeild strength (i.e. 3 times stronger).

Steel (stainless or otherwise) can be a good choice.

I don't use very much on the robots I have a say about, but I don't know what their machine is supposed to do...

Oh No :ahh: 3 times heavy? :ahh: 3 times stiffer? :ahh: This might end up being a muder machine, a higher version of evil machine :ahh:

What next?- do I get a piece of Samsonite to throw at the walls....

No cage can ever hold me !!!!! and Big Mike stays awake these days or the Volcano Crew will dress him up while he's sleeping.......

Unless that really is a part of the robot and the robot is going to be his date for Valentine's Day.. lol

If it is meant to be on the robot, I hope that it's a dual use ball cage / ball grabber. I think teams that figure out how to make this work will be at a huge advantage...

Either 25 didn't think/test enough, or its not a hopper, because there is no need for the horizontal bars to be spaced so close.

The Mystery Part Revealed-

The part originally shown is actually a giant guard for a mass production centrifuge used at the BMS facility. So if you guessed that it wasn't a part of our robot you would be right and if you said that it kept the machine from eating small children you were also right.

I just couldn't resist when we were at thier shop a few weeks ago and saw this great piece of machining.

Our latest machine actually uses the 2003 drive system modified for a bit more power at about the same speed and an arm that makes the 2000 machine look like a tiny twig. Plus a few surprises added in for fun....

we are just 3 weeks away from the NJ regional
