Jaw Coupling
We're looking for a supplier of Lovejoy-style jaw couplings like those 45 used last season to switch out its gearboxes between The Mighty Auk and the ball drive robot. Lightweight and small are the most important criteria, of course.
Can anyone recommend a supplier for these couplings? I've already checked through both MSC and McMaster-Carr and, while they have some available, they seem a bit too heavy-duty for my needs. The link that was provided last season to the MSC catalog page from which 45's couplings were purchased doesn't seem to point to the same place anymore. Thanks :) |
Re: Jaw Coupling
Have you tried Small Parts?
You could also try hobby shops. I'm into model railroading and I've seen minature Lovejoy style couplings to connect the motors to the gearing in the locomotive trucks. These will probably br too small and delicate for what you need though. Just remember that suppliers and manufactures change their products from time to time so when a new MSC catalog comes out for instance not all the links will work from previous years. |

The post by Andy tells what we had to do to them so that they would work. |
Re: Jaw Coupling
The CEC coupling is great. We did end up using it (after modifying it as per Andy's guidelines for 3/8" shaft). These things don't weigh hardly anything and work great. Just make sure MSC has them in stock before you purchase them.
For each side you will need 2 hubs and one spider to comlete the coupling. You also want to purchase the Buna-N spider (the softest of the 3, the other 2 are too hard for most applications) |
Re: Jaw Coupling
Yep, these couplings are nice. We did not strip the keyway in the composite, but we were worried about it. So, we boached a hex hole in the composite part and put a hex sleeve piece of aluminum in it's place. This hex sleeve had a 3/8" hole with a 1/8" keyway in it, just like the composite coupling had.
Good luck, Andy B. |
