What REALLY powers your robot?

I would like to know what really powers your team to build the robot.

smokescreen 13-02-2002 22:58

the driving force behind our building efforts are mentors with devices which deliver high voltage electrical shocks

Anton Abaya 14-02-2002 10:23

does Ritalin count? i think half of the kids on my team take it.

Adam Krajewski 18-02-2002 06:29

triple espressos, chai, and Green Apple Jones.

Greg McCoy 18-02-2002 21:02

No coke, pepsi....... :D

Carolyn Duncan 19-02-2002 04:12

PEPSI!!!!!!!!!! That's my drink!

ahecht 19-02-2002 05:06

hamsters!

Tim Baird 19-02-2002 12:02

There's a rat on our team...

How did you guys learn how to power your team with hamsters? That is a well guarded process that only the wpi folks know about. I'm going to have to crack down on our security here.

tim

Stephanie 19-02-2002 19:04

hahaha, how *do* you do it. i haev one, and so does a friend of mine, maybe we can set something up...

Tim Baird 19-02-2002 19:34

Sorry, it's a secret

I would love to tell you, but that would be unfair for the rest of the team and frankly, a copyright infringement on our secret technology that is employed here on the wpi campus for our robot.

Sorry,
Tim

smokescreen 19-02-2002 21:07

one key element to dual hamster powered propulsion, is to have the hamsters facing the same direction.
otherwise things happen.
bad things.

Greg McCoy 06-03-2002 10:44

But first, have the hampsters drink Pepsi...

Matt Lundberg 07-03-2002 12:53

Software Powers The Robot

according to a sticker that happened to be put on our button box a couple years back...
Software Powers The Robot
(the bawls didnt go over as well as i had hoped with our software team though so i guess bawls doesnt power the software team and since the software team isnt powered by bawls then the robot is not powered by bawls

mmmmmmmm, caffiene.

I popped a tin of these in about an hour. 75 mints per tin, 3 mints = one can of cola, you do the math.

Speaking of Bawls.... any team who passes out Bawls at nats will get much praise from me.

VampyrNoireGoth 14-03-2002 18:11

One standard caffeine pill = 100 mg caffeine.
ALL SODA CAFFEINE COMPARISONS ARE BASED ON 12 Oz. CANS

Code Red Mountain Dew = 100.0 mg
Jolt = 100.0 mg
Mountain Dew = 55.0 mg
Mr. Pibb = 40.8 mg
Coke = 45.6 mg
Pepsi = 37.2 mg
RC cola = 36.0 mg
Dr. Pepper = 39.6 mg

There are of course many other sodas out there but those are the most common ones i think that people drink. As you can see mountain dew should still be considered the best because cola bites.....so jolt it automatically thrown out the window due to its poor flavor and high cost. Code Red Dew is also disgusting but at least isnt costly like jolt. My conclusion : Mountain Dew is the best because it has the highest caffeine content of any of the good tasting yet affordable sodas to buy in bulk for all nighters :) I think i went through an entire 12 pack a night of the stuff.....gotta love it. Plus it also has one of the highest sugar contents of any sodas.

**INTERESTING FACT** In Canada Mountain Dew has NO caffeine. Poor Canadians.......they are deprived the joy of the dew :(

Kristina 14-03-2002 18:41

BROWNIES!

As the official baker of team 691 I fuel my team with brownies, cookies, cupcakes....all that good stuff. Then, for lent I gave up caffeine (which includes chocolate) so I stopped baking because I would be too tempted to eat my creations. That didn't go over well with my team who later tp'ed my house and left a box of brownie mix on my doorstep and told me to bake again.

I miss caffeine! I'm gonna be in Seattle (coffee heaven) and I can't drink any of the good stuff until the day we leave, Easter!

PS. <GASP> how could anyway not like Code Red Mountain Dew. Its the only soda I drink and I love it!

Jim McGeehin 15-03-2002 11:12

Without a doubt, the little "Monkey with Hammer" switch on the control panel.

Mark Hamilton 16-03-2002 20:56

Penguin Mints (thinkgeek.com) + bawls.
1. Remove Cap, insert mints
2. Replace Cap, shake vigourously
3. Drink
4. Build robot

VampyrNoireGoth 17-03-2002 20:42

Just out of curiosity......what is "Bawls" ? I have NEVER heard of it.......maybe it doesn't exist in Arizona lol......hmmmmm

CaptainPlaid 17-03-2002 22:42

Oh come on! Everyone knows what "bawls" is don't they?

*Could someone please whisper in my ear what it really is? I don't want to be a dork. :) *

Joe3 24-03-2002 20:36

RE: monkey with a hammer

As for powering the robot, I'd have to check. However, last time I checked, there was a "Monkey with a Hammer release" switch on our control board.

DaBruteForceGuy 02-04-2002 15:56

u don't know what BAWLS is?

HERE: for all of the math geeks out there here is an equatio..

that's the best soft drink EVER on Earth. So bad you still don't have it in north america. try it when you come to Brazil!!
It's one of the favorites in Brazil, maybe just after Coke.

By the way, how come you guys stand drinking doctor pepper?!? I really don't understand why someone would drink that. I only try it when I go to US, cause we don't have it here (good!).

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I agree! Dr. Pepper (I have another name for it which is not apropriate for posting) is soooooooooooooo gross! I know, I know some people actually like that stuff and it's not nice for me to say such horrible things about it but yeah I don't like it at all. And if anyone claims that our robot is run off Mt. Dew, then they are refering to time during the actual shifts, not the late nights... ;) hehehe.

Elyse Holguin 13-04-2002 04:14

Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Sierra Mist, Diet Pepsi, Aquafina, Krispy Kremes, Lil Caesar's Pizza, and the energy our team gives off by bowling and outrageous 80s dancing. Anyone that's seen our team in action should agree.

HEY!! Dr. Peper is one of the best made stuff on this earth, next to Moutian Dew and fruit smoothies!!!! Get Dr. Peper and a few scoops o' vanilla ice-cream, mix, and you got one of the best drinks!! Vernors is good that way too, a Boston Cooler, yum! Well, that is it, i am sorry i am bashing, but i have to say Dr. Peper is one of the best drinks out there!!!

What?

well, whatever powers us seems to be working this year.

Robocardgrl5 13-04-2002 22:33

deathcon 2

What powers our team is Mountain, chips, and Krispy Kremes. Every morning our engineers would bring in Krispy Kremes before each competition. Bob calls Krispy Kremes...Deathcon 2. Whatever that means but its still funny. We drank lots of Mountain Dew. And Frito Lay gave us tons of free chips for promotional items. Our pit was flooded with people trying to score some chips. We of course made sure we had some for ourselves as well.:D

Little Lee132 13-04-2002 22:38

I would say the power source(batteries) power our robot. I think what you need to ask is what powers your team spirit. And for my team we are powered up w/ Krispy Kremes, Starbucks Frappachinos(and many other different kinds of coffee from there) and McDonalds!!!!!!!!! I wonder if any of those places would want to sponser my team?

Mountain Dew is exactly the same here, as it is in the US. Sadly tho that doesn't help the bad taste.

Pepsi all the way.

purplehaze357 18-04-2002 19:51

well this all depends on who you talk to...because for most of them at the point you need this stuff...caffine is caffine and it doesnt matter...but ima coke guy and/or cofee myself....but i enjoy the occasional redbull energy drink when i need a quick JOLT :D

PsychoPhil 21-04-2002 19:51

Shelley_delphi chick 29-04-2002 10:01

Sometimes you feel like a nut, & sometimes you don't........

Every year there is a group of deicated engineers, teachers, and the ever so change of the student population in my team. I don't think that anyone on the team can live with this program. For six weeks we see more of eachother and the shop, then our jobs, family, friends outside the team, and don't even try to have a special someone. Even before the season starts we are in the shop cleaning and organizing and making sure we are proud of what we do. FIRST in my school has changed peoples lives, whether it has given them the oppertunities they wouldn't have has in a city school system, made it alittle easier to get extra money for college, or widened friendships throughout the country. Dean said it well at the awards the other night when he said, your FIRST friendships have alittle more then your regular friendships at school or at home. You not only grow as a person, but you gain more knowledge and wisdom as well. Everyone should be very thankful to what thier team has accomplished in six weeks and what thier team will continue to do. For the seniors leaving the high school program, give back what you recieved and you will have gained even more!

Thanks for a life full of memories.....

Michelle

How dare you...defile the sanctity of the Dew, a beverage so pure ambrosia and honey is purtrid beside it! Mountain Dew is the nectar of the gods!

Michelle, I feel the same way. FIRST gives a lot to its participants, and much of it cannot be measured with dollars or hours, profit margins or taxes. What FIRST gives many people each year is a most precious gift, that allows people to change their lives for the better.

Well said, Michelle, very well said.

Quain 02-05-2002 06:58

I'm a PURE guy.. i don't need any of that artifical crap... i'm just naturally energetic and spunky... an occasional JOLT.. in cola flavor is good @ like 1 or 2am... but thats it... ----for those who don't know.. Jolt is that soda with 2x the caffine.. and it was killing people with the original receipe.. something about making their heart explode or just go really fast? *shrug* but its all good now.. and keeps you awake... ----- I need to learn to drink coffee for college...

Shelley_delphi chick 03-05-2002 07:12

Why are we talking about PoP?

Guys.....FIRST isn't about the pop you drink at 3 in the morning while putting together the Chairman's Award or while testing out the fly wheel on your robot. (Flying balls that late can be scary) I believe FIRST is about what the adults and students and parents and family put it together as, not a can of alminum. During the six week build time there is alot that flies out the window, but you should take time and refelect on positive things and people out there taking caffine pills to stay up.....not a good idea. I cann't drink Caffine and I know I outlasted most people in the shop and the editing room, while working as well.....typical day

school by 7 to work on robot
first class at nine
school till 1:30
Robot work till 4:30
Eat
Work 5:30-9
RObot from 9:15 till whenever

So, I know how crazy things can get, but that still doesn't excuse you from taking those kinds of things. Didn't anyone see the save by the bell show where jessie got hooked on them and couldn't get off?!?

Khalicl13 05-05-2002 22:53

Dr. Thunder and Mountain Lightning all the way, baby.

Sorry, just outta curiousity though?!?

MBiddy 11-05-2002 17:49

I'd like to explain what powers our robot, but I don't know where you guys would get that many pickles.

DUCK TAPE!! WIRE TIES!! And don't forget the FLOATIE THINGIES SOME PEOPLE USED AS BUMPERS!!

mtaman02 10-06-2002 21:39

The thing that powers my team to build a robot is a full day of making fun of our coaches "Darren Hoffman". He's very hairy so we make Hair jokes about him. Drug's well we use ritalin and for a drink we top it off with some sugar. Mountain Dew / Pepsi after that we purposely get screasmed at by the coaches. I enjoy being on this team. Its so fun.

Do the Dew!!!

Aaron Lussier 12-06-2002 12:18

My team

Some of the many things that keep my team going are
-Mountain Dew
-Jolt
-Krank 2o <------(Caffine Water)
-Knowing that we only have one week to go and that all we have is a chassis
-Soccer Juggling Competition
-And finally our engineers who never sleep and who I think are robots.:D

dixonij 12-06-2002 13:08

My team utilizes many methods from massive Mountain Dew intake to going on the laptop to intaking sugar. But how can you diss the Dew? Pepsi? Cola drinks are disgusting. Personally, I like Root Beer, Birch Beer, and Mountain Dew.

Jnadke 19-06-2002 14:29

Little Caesers keeps us powered. They're one of our sponsors and we get pizzas from them for like $2 each!

To wash it down, we typically are fueled off of Mountain Dew or Code Red...

ok... leave it to the only girl on the pit crew to get it right JIM!....

The switch was NOT on the control PANEL... and the switch was taken off a LONG while ago... and MOEhawk kept running!

So all robot control belongs to Lou-cifer and the pit crew... who used the energy gained from the plethora of Papa Johns pizzas and the lovely carbonated beverages from the fridge [including mountain dew [or MOE-tain dew]] durring the build period; ran parabolas in the pit area chanting, banging the infamous sticks, useing voodoo, and a large amount on anti-seize [VINCE!!!!!]. In order to resurrect MOEhawk between matches.

PS- our pit rocked! We just need to get an "under the cabinet" tape deck to play some elvis next year.

Ashley Weed 07-07-2002 19:00

Hasn't anyone ever heard of the stapple of life? MOXIE!!!!
No human should ever have to go through life without it.

Also, tie wraps...... one of our engineers gave me a tie wrap Thursday night at the MidAtlantic Regional about a half hour before the pits closed. I had been up since about 3:30 am that morning, and worked and drove the robot all day. I was very tired and while holding on to the end of the tie wrap tied around my wrist, I started to lean as I fell asleep and ended up pulling the tie wrap very tight after falling asleep, bad idea. They are not intended for children.

Todd Derbyshire 07-07-2002 20:52

Yeah we run on Wendy's and Moeism's.

Steve Team 311 05-12-2002 21:39

Doing the dew, or visiting the doctor?

God this is the toughest poll yet! How does one decide between the caffineated collosus, and the Dr. of Death? Personally I'm torn, but from a census of the team usual stock I'm gonna admit Moutain Dew. But on a personal note I'll take one Dr. Pepper and call you in the morning. -Big Steve

whiskas 06-12-2002 14:38

Just about everything

Pizzas, chinese food, hamburguers, coke, Guaraná ( as Digo noted, hehehe ), and 100% pure Brazilian Coffee ( a STRONG, wake-up-the-dead BLAAACCCK liquid ). You know nothing about staying awake till you had one of those.
Oh, there´s also the local Chimarrão drink ( mild caffeine tea, drank in a weird bowl ), but that´s more of a social thing, not for the late-at-nite hours.
And for me, it´s screaming loud Metal on my earplugs as we go into the night ( and I´m locked in my corner hacking some code ).
Just my R$ 0.02 =)

Johca_Gaorl 06-12-2002 16:05

Anyone tried Amp? It's an energy drink made by Mountain Dew...

It's pretty good.

TomA 06-12-2002 17:50

not sure about the rest of the team but here's my list
-1 liter bottles of pepsi
-frappachinos
-actually anything caffine
-hamsters/gerbals
-munkys
-chikins
-Andrew W.K.
-load, fast music
that's about all i need :D :D :D

Shelley_delphi chick 06-12-2002 20:37

There aren't many girl on my robotics team that actually get dirty and work in the shop, so normally it's the guys, engineers, andmyself up late in the shop. I think that's what keeps me up tryig to make sure i'm always an arms reach away from any of them. I guess they keep me on my toes because I'm not allowed to have caffine. I have ulcers and acid refelx (not that ya'll wanted to know), so no caffine my way!! Pure die hard love for the program!!

Mongoose 07-12-2002 02:14

On the subject of bawls, not everyone has heard of it. www.bawls.com

The only reason I know about it is from people in IRC talking about it before going to a LAN party. I havn't had a chance to try it because the only place within 20 miles of me that sells it is a Strip Club / Bar.

I went to a LAN party in Kingsport, Tennessee. We had some great stuff called Dr. Enuf. Wonderfully caffinated and quality taste. Aparently we were only supposed to take 2 each during the 36 hour. I think i had 11 and a Mountain Dew.

In the last few years with 247, caffiene power was provided by a vending machine which I think was only Coke pruducts. This led to a minor addiction to Cherry Coke, which I've since kicked.

With 470.. I'm not honestly not sure. There is a Coke vending machine near the build room but they have a clean coffee maker IN the build room.. clean coffee maker = no coffee ever made. Looks like they bought it and havn't used it. I said to them yesterday "That thing will be getting a lot of use this year," little did they know, I was serious. I'm bringing in a big ol' can of coffee and our robot will be finished on January 7th.

I think you're right...I don't remember ever seeing that coffee maker used. Generally, somebody would run across the street to Farmer Jack and stock up on two liter bottles of whatever was on sale...

FOOD!!

We are promised pizza (Pappa Johns) if we stay long enough. When your working your hunger is what keeps you going.

Scott team 48 27-12-2002 05:44

Simple solution for the whole robot

If you get a monkey and shout commands at it you eliminate the whole problem of control systems, programing and everything else that breaks. You should probably bring an extra one incase your original one breaks a bone or gets sick.

lol
just a thought.

On the topic of hamsters...

Quote: How did you guys learn how to power your team with hamsters?

I have actually built a hamster-powered car for my physics class. We got a hamster and built a car for it and it tried to make it run...But the cat had stepped on it the night before and so we ended up fabricating the data, but that's not the important part :) So all of you non-experienced hamster drivers better watch your mouth, because you're talking to a real expert!!!!!

A more authorative voice is welcome to give any more information ... especially regarding taste :)

power

I find some raw wires and a car battery help to give that wakeup kick in the morning, and maybe 20 gallons of dunkin donuts coffee, but pizza is our primary foodstuff of choice, and for 2 bucks a person we can get 2 pies at our local place, if we take out.

This is such a great thread, but it has to be Coca-Cola or Coffee, nothing else would work.

Crack, Liquid Extasy, Cheese, and Inkjet color ink all boiled in one big saucepan to create the most dangerous thing ever......Stroganoff.

You shock that up with a car batt. or two, and that serves like 50kids for at least a week... :yikes:

I kinda eats away half of your stomach because of the Cheese:Extasy chemical reaction, so I stick to Coffee....

That and the communist propaganda we spread around each other about how were going to overcome conventional bot technology and come up with something entirely new....that's what keeps us motivated for the six weeks...

We have Mountian Dew or Crab Juce

EEEwwww!!! Rugggahh!!..... Ok I'll have the Crab Juce

Still love Homer even though he hates the dew

Heard at the concession stand New England UTC Regional
"You people sure drink a lot of Mountain Dew"

Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation,
for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer.
Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller
and more of it can be taken in at a glance
and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen.
