Real "Duck" tape

Actually, there IS a brand of Duct Tape called "Duck Tape"!

Their logo is a picture of an anthropomorphized duck wearing overalls and a painter's cap... <grin>

Yes, yes, i know. They specialize in U.S. Mail tape (i think) but they have all kinds of tape, though. I wonder if i can be their spokes-person?

You need Bungee Cords, too...

Around here they specialize in the good old grey stuff... :D Most of the big chain stores carry that brand. I groaned when I first saw it.

Don't you mean "spokes-duck"? ;)

Is there anything duck tape can't do?
Well, yea! You also need Bungee Cords. Duct tape is your adhesive, and bungee cords are your springs... :)

There is even an old Filk song to the tune of "The Old Grey Mare" that goes: "The world is held together with Duct Tape and Bungee Cords, Duct Tape and Bungee Cords, (etc...)"

DUCK Tape...

Mr. B,

Until recently I also thought it was Duct Tape. A couple of weeks ago I saw a show on the History Channel that talked about the history of Duck tape. The show explained that it was originally designed to be a water-proof tape for sealing amunition cases for the military. It was called DUCK tape as in "water off a duck's back".

Just my useless bit of trivia for the day,

Yeah, believe it or not in our local paper there was an article about duc(t/k) tape a while back and it said that the "duck" came from WWII and "duct" came after when people used it on ducts.

What exciting news we have in Kokomo :D

Duct came before Duck

Hmmm... Boy, that's doesn't sound right at ALL... I'm an older guy, and that sure doesn't jive with what I've lived. I grew up hearing "Duct Tape", and never even HEARD of "Duck Tape" before the late 1980's. <Keith does some web research...>
I just checked with Manco, maker of Duck Tape.

Sure enough. Their official history agrees with my experience. According to Manco's timeline, "Duct" came first by 45 years! See: http://www.manco.com/aboutus/history/history.asp and click on the 40's and the 80's.

According to Manco, Inc., the maker of "Duck Tape":
1940 - Duct tape is invented during World War II. American G.I.s use the strong, versatile adhesive for everything from repairing broken windows to makeshift bandages.
[...]
1985 - Jack Kahl officially re-names duct tape "Duck Tape" and creates Manco T. Duck, Manco´s mascot and ambassador of good will.

I hope that clears it up.

Duck vs. Duct....

I did a little web research too...

According to the Duck Tape Guys:

"Is it Duct or Duck? We don’t want you to be confused, so we will explain. The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S. Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition cases. So, they enlisted the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it as “duck” tape (like water off a duck’s back)."

Here's the web site:

http://www.octanecreative.com/ducttape/duckvsduct.html

I'm not nearly old enough to remember any of this but that Duck/t Tape was invented to seal ammunition cases in WWII. Maybe Manco hit the Duck tape scene after it was already being called Duct Tape?

Who knows, maybe these guys are quoting the History Channel?

Here's a site from Henkel, who appears to own Manco, that seems to support both sides:

http://www.henkelpr.com/doc_text.asp...t=ppr&cls=DUCK

I'll still vote for Duck but I'd say both are right.
