Re: Worst injury
not the worst injuryand it didnt happen in robotics but one of the ones that freaked me out the most: this idiot was playing w/ a low power nail gun cause he was bored and was being stupid and taped back the saftey so it would shoot for as long as he held the trigger. someone called him to help them and as i walked behind him he droped the nail gun and it fired. i felt like someone had nudged my hand and looked down to see a good inchand a half long nail sticking out of my hand. it didnt hurt much and there was no blood but it was unnerving to have a nail just sticking out of my hand
p.s. I know a kid who because of a faulty trigger button got a model rocket shot into the side of his head but he was lucky and had a thick skull ;) |
Re: Worst injury
i've been lucky to get only a few cuts and bruises, i'm too short to have last year's BEAST whack me in the head like it did most people on the team, i think the worst thing that's happened was taking a few layers of skin off with the sander last year. however, one of my teammates almost drilled through my hand and sawzalled it off in the pits at west michigan regional last year when he wouldn't take the batteries off, and then pull the tools out of their bins while holding the on switches.

Re: Worst injury
Last year I cut the back of my hand on a sharp piece of aluminum. I was tightening a bolt and the wrench slipped off the bolt head and my hand went flying into a freshly cut, non-filed aluminum edge. It cut the back of my knuckle; when I clentched my fist to widen the cut, I saw white... first time I've ever seen my own tendon before.
Now our team files everything before we start working on it. |
Re: Worst injury
We have a team member who we swear hides an infared emitter in his pants somewhere. Everytime we try to run autonomous the robot somehow manages to hit him. He's been run over, spun around in a circle, had his ankle broken and lost two cell phones.

As far as my injuries go...well, I've been lucky. I'm just a programmer, and nothing bad has happened to me yet. I'll see how long that lasts when it comes time for regionals... |
Re: Worst injury
Mostly I have just gotten deburring cuts and various other little scratches from knicking myself on stuff.

Re: Worst injury
To add a few of my own injuries i has inclued the following...
- inch long second degree burn on my left fore arm from a soldering iron that'slight wasn't working - scar in the shape of a 7/16 1/4-20 nut on the inside of my left elbow from a hot nut that went flying after someone cut it off our robot with a sawzall (thanks Marc) - bloddy scrape on all four knuckles on my left hand when my work got caught on a belt sander and pulled my hand in - hit in the back with a 4-6" piece of extrudes that someone didn't clamp when they were cutting it with a table saw - sliced my thumb nail on my left hand off when the piece i was drilling got loose from the viceon the drill press - i got tripped into a wood joiner and left a huge joiner shaped welt (like 6"x 12") on my stomach and chest (thanks Don) - there are many more that drew less blood or didn'tleave a scar that are too numerous to metion hey its true what they say, you learn through experience P.S.- can you figure out that i am left handed? |
Re: Worst injury
We had a lot of problems at anap, once the robot fell off the cart and the chinup system hit someone on the head. He had to go to the hospital and get 3 staples, but he was back later that day. While watching a later match where we did a chinup and got 185 pts (!) the jumping up and down and such caused it to start bleeding again. Back to the hospital, 3 more staples. He's fine now, and has forgiven the chinup system since it helped us win!
He was fine the whole time except for the bleeding, and apparently got some interesting pictures of him smiling with blood on his shirt, etc. Those that were there might remember the guy from the naval base, before the "quiz" said "I know your head probably hurts by now...." to which dave said "you dont know the half of it!" Right before we were called up to get our trophy/metals the grandfather of a teammate (who had also helped the team with his machine shop) collapsed. He was also taken to the hospital, and I'm told he is going to be fine as well. |
Re: Worst injury
I squished my finger putting our pit together, during the Great Lakes regional this year. It is still purple! OUCH

Re: Worst injury
Personally, my injuries have been nothing big.
Last year, I tried out for comp. team and myself and another student, Joe, were picking the robot up. Joe stand taller then I do and when he picked up the one end...it tilted to the side and well...I ended up getting knocked in the head. No blood lose or anything though. And just today our robot was running autonomous when it suddenly decided I was prey. It zoomed off target and straight at me. Luckily, I didn't get hit and hey...Since I happened to be holding a camera, filming, I got a great shot of the robot going straight at me! I think Video Crew has had more then one bad incounter with our robot trying to get at us. I don't think it likes being on camera :D |
Re: Worst injury
Most are minor the most painful was the time I was drilling plasic and I was told "don't use a clamp, just rest it against it's self so when the plastic is forced to turn it runs into the drill press and doesn't move." Well it somehow bent and whipped around and lashed me in the stomach and scratched up my arm. Other than that I had a lot of close calls where one time my fingers were close to the gears of a moving milling machine because I wasn't looking where the switch to turn it off was.

Re: Worst injury
Last year, one of our members was fiddling with wires or something in the robot, and suddenly the arm clamped down, and so his arm got squished, and it broke his arm.
This year, we've had a few major injuries: disc sander --> couple fingernails, and finger required I don't remember how many stitches; drill --> gash on arm; wheel spun around while someone's finger was in the spokes --> gash all around the finger, and then later, on another finger, another gash from something. Minor injuries were just little cuts or blood blisters, things like that. |
