how many people are on your animation team?
 

From what i have seen of the credits in the movies uploaded to Streamline, most teams have several if not 10 or more people working on their animation. I know our animator would be too modest to point this out, but he was really the only one who worked on our clip. He modeled, animated, rendered, everything. Are the credits just a little to generous in their inclusions, or do most teams really have many people working on their projects. BTW, i think ours is pretty good, you should check it out :cool:

Our team has only one person on the animation team. He gives credit to the student that helped him debug his animation and the student that wrote the music for it, but he is really the only one that did the animation. He won the visualization award at Pittsburgh last year & we gave him the extra trophy

We had 3 solid people working on our team but had about 2-3 people who contributed sound, lighting and video editing.

I am the soul animator for my team. Sound was done by another person but I supervised that and editing. All models, textures, etc., were sterenuously done by myself.

We don't allow the mentors do the animation, or help on anything major. The mentors are allowed to help when asked how to do specific things, but they merely tell us what tool to use, and not how to use it. Unfortunetely, we had 5 students sign up to do the animation, and towards the end, it turned into 3 of us doing the whole animation. Due to time restrictions and excessive schoolwork, we were unable to finish the animation, with simply 3 students, without extensive 3DSM experience. We hope to get more students involved to help next year, and complete it in time to submit.

Our Team has one student animator, KA.
One student for moral support and story help, SEE (doesn't know how to animate)
And me for technical support.

We had three main people (an animator, a modeler, and a lighting/sound person), but had a bunch of other people show up and help with specific parts, so the full animation team was more like 6 people, plus "quality control" and random grunt work people that were hanging around.

We have three very dedicated animators, two students and one mentor. This year they had something go horribly wrong. The night before the animation was due they began rendering, and the computer crashed and lost half of their animation. They stayed through most of the night and came back at 5 AM the next morning to finish it and submitted it on time. Despite what happened it was the best animation we have ever had.

Our animation team consists of 3 experienced members and 2 newbies. We also had one other guy do music and another guy helped us with misc. stuff like neworking, flash, etc. So although our credits will say 7 people, only 2.5 (yes, .5, sadly, one guy's computer was too slow for him to contribute as much as he could have) were really able to contribute significantly to the animation...

I believe we had around maybe 5 people total. But only 2 of us actually worked on the animation itself. The rest were just thinkers and such. True, they do have a purpose. But only at the beginning. ;)

Our team technically has 5 people that work on the animation, but most aren't proficient enough in the software to put out work up to the level we are going for this year. In the end it was me and one other guy that put together the whole animation.

We have 2 seniors (including me) that did most of the work for this years animation... we also had two "minions" that watched what we did and had them do some minor things with our animation to get them "aquainted" with the software... hopefully they'll do fine next year without us!!...*crosses fingers*...

We have one dude do some modeling and sounds
-- one modeled and rendered the scenes
-- one modeled and created the music
-- I textured, modeled, animated, put it all scenes into one movie, and rexported in .mov form, basicaly everything else.

I also say good luck to my team because half of us are seniors.

Two semi-rookies with what they themselves call "no experience."

We're quite proud of them. =)

The plan is to expand next year, but no one is quite sure how that's going to work out.

We had 5 members on our animation team. No extras for sound or editing, just 5. 2 experienced, 3 new. And a somewhat inexperienced mentor. In fact, we often had to steal a mentor from engineering who used to do animation to help us. Oh, and the hardest animation idea we've ever concieved, an incosistant method of distributing the workload, and only 5 weeks to do it (school was closed the 6th week, it needed to be finished on Friday the 13th). with all of the management issues, it may be better to have a one person animation team. but I believe having a larger team serves a greater purpose. Last year, we also had five members. This year, one went to the chairman's group and one to the engineering (one quit). This year, three of our new animators are planning on moving to engineering. Although it's bad for our animation team to lose so many members to other parts of the team, it's good for the cause of FIRST. I never would've wanted to go into engineering before I joined FIRST, and I probably wouldn't have joined if it wasn't for animation. What this does is attract a larger audience to the FIRST community, as well as teach a quickly growing form of communicating theoretical ideas and possibilities, as well as displaying events in history.

Back on topic:
I was the most experienced member of our group. I had been working on character studio all summer so that we could put people in our animation. In retrospect, I believe it consumed far more time than it was worth. One of the big "sellers" (so to speak) of our animation was going to be a roaring crowd at a FIRST event in the beggining of the animation. One member spent the entire time animating people cheering, clapping, and jumping up and down as if in a crowed. To make a long story short, we couldn't get it to render at the last minute and ended up just using a picture of a crowd. Once again, in retrospect he could've been working on cameras and lighting, which were both very last minute in our animation. Oh well, hind sight is always 20-20.

Team 648 has ONE (1) person that does the animation. He does it by himself, without any help from a mentor, in his free time. (by the way, he's graduating this year)

I'm impressed with anybody who does the animation in their free time, outside of robotics. In many ways having only one person on the team is easier, much less managing needed. However, the fact that one person can work on the robot and do the entire animation is astounding. Good work!

On a similar note, team 406's animation was done by one person (with a little bit of mentorship on my part), in one day! :yikes: Sure, it was certainly not a great animation, but considering the person who made it had never made an animation before and considering the time, a congratulations should be extended to 406 (although, I don't think anyone from the team is a member of the forum. oh well).

Anyway, to make a long story short, great job to anyone who does the animation by themselves. You likely show more dedication than many of your teammates who make the robot.

We had only 2 people on the animation this year, but one held the up-to-date models of everything on his computer. One night he was doing a test render of a project he was working on, and his computer fried, so we had to start over. Our final animation was done in my room over about 10 hours one night >.<

animation? team? From what I heard, some team's animation team are bigger than our total team. I did most of our computer stuff, like the website, and photography. Next year we hope to have an actual animation.

Advice - learn how to use the software BEFORE the build season. If you don't, you'll spend all of your time learning how to do something rather than getting it done.

we had 2 lead animators but at least 8 other kids were involved in some way (rendering, sound, small parts, etc)
i made skins for an number of the objects since i only know photoshop *but i'm determined to learn how to use 3DS Max!*

We additionally have no animation team. The only year we tried it was our rookie year. We simply do not have the resources to do this. Granted, I would like to give animation a shot, but I already am going to have 2+ jobs on our team next year, so thats out of the question. Also, we have no one trained in anything even relating to animation, so that makes our cause even harder to fulfill.

I was the only one on our team, I wish I had spent more time over the summer. The reason I never finshed was because I was spending way too much time working on learning new techniques and different features. Even though I didn't finsh the whole animation, I felt I learned A LOT more than I would have just sitting at home.....

We have a four-man animation team. We're all essentially novices, but I was very much satisfied with the animation that we built, considering that we're rookies. We might get two more to join the animation team in 2005, but the way I like to run the department is without any mentors. We learn from eachother and it's really fun having a "guys' night" with animation parties in which you stay up till 4AM doing 3ds max... because you put the AVA entry on the backburner during the build season and had five days to do the entire thing. :eek: I really don't think that the amount of people on your animation team really counts, though. With even one determined person, you can shell out some really hot stuff in the two months you have to work on it, compared to a group of ten people who don't put their heart into it. But, it's just better and friendlier when you have more than one person; you make really close friends with them throughout the season and when all's said and done, you have a very impressive, teamwork built animation entry--and teamwork is what it's all about, right? ;)

Hmm...I'd say we have about 2 people who are strictly animators because they suck at modelling, 2 main modellers who are really good at it, about 2 people who just learned this year and are getting good, and 1 texture artist. I'd say we have a very good animation team, except we're just a bunch of slackers, so we don't always do the work quickly :rolleyes: anyway, animation is awesome, and im lookin forward to it next year when i get to teach the new freshman interested in it. Need to make someone to carry on the Polymodeller's Anti-Boolean legacy :cool:

to impulse3d: i see what your saying where w/ out a mentor, things run much smoother, but you need someone there who does this for a living to criticize your work seriously, and help you make it better

We had one artistically talented student tackle the annimation. Barbra Decarmo Learned the software and did the team's annimation, which the team takes pride in. She also is president of the school's art club and helped make a 3 person Bulldog, like a chinese dragon you'd see in a parade. It was great and got some attention at the UCF regional. I believe there were a total of 6 teams that did an annimation at UCF. Being one of the six ain't bad for our rookie year.
