Finally! Who has shipped?
I just got home from our last night of working on the bot. It had to be at our sponsor by 10 tonight for shipping preparation.
it is official that we will be the team that does everything. We shipped a bot base and not only 7, BUT 8 attachments. 3 of these were made in 6 weeks, 5 were made in 2 days.... not one is done. we need to finish whatever we decide to do at regionals. Who else has shipped their bots, and how much work needs to be done at the regionals? |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
From what I saw when I stopped by the other night, you should be ok, but you do realize that during weigh in all attachments have top be present right??
We ship our robot off to our sponsor at 9-10 am so it can be out of our hands by 5:00pm tomorrow... I'm going to be sad to see it off, but we did have a major breakthrough last night and it got the whole team psyched up right before we started packing the robot in the crate!! |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
ours ships tomorrow at 3:30, we have NOTHING to do at the regional other than calibrate the banners. I hope that you get all of the mechanisms done in time to use them, keep in mind that all possible attachments must be weighed in w/ the robot. Even if you have 2 arms, everything gets weighed together, it gets tough to stay under 130 w/ too many things.
Good luck at the regionals Marcus - Team 219 |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
I just got back from our last meeting as well... The last two people over there had just left to go over to the university to weigh it... I'm kinda nervous. It was pretty sweet though, the whole bot minus our 4 foot top arm joint fit in the back of his camry-like midsize car. I think they will have the thing back to the workshop and in the box before too long....
We do still need to work on our ball pincer at the comps, it grabs them but its not too hot. |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We kinda just threw a bunch of stuff in the crate...it was so much fun :)
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
As of 2-25-2004 @ 9:40e are still at school trying to get the three extras working we will post a picture of the final product after everyone has shipped. spec. one arm that can grab the bar, a way to grab the mobil goal, and a way that can pull the 118 lbs. off the ground 6 ft. we will be at the school until probably 3 o'clock. this is not the first time that our team has stayed this long. we did it last year. :yikes: our whole team is extreamly tired and need a ton of sleep.
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
you guys are lucky, we get kicked out at like 10pm when the janitors leave...if we want them to stay we have to pay...are you paying for someone to be at the school?

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
I escorted our crate down to the shipping dock at Gleason at 12:30 am this morning.
Now its all up to that big guy up there! you know FedEx! :c) |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?

And for the record, the robot was placed inside the back seat of a Nissan Sentra. I could not believe it actually fit. Currently 2.5lbs over :(. Hopefully they can lose that weight tonight. |

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
we ship between 3-5 pm tomorrow.. I just got home (3 AM)... All i can say is this has by far been the best two weeks of my life. Ironic too, since I was there (tech center) until 12 every night, including weekends.
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
well, team 1123 boxed her up in the crate as of 2:01 am...man oh man...the elation I was getting as we watched the bot test hanging on the bar...then as I was able to wash my hands of robotics for 3 weeks...it has been a very long and tiring 6 weeks. I needs some sleep...

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Yea it's crated up... It's not done and It can't do what we designed it to do but thats becide the point right... It's all about the fun. :(

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Well, we finally screwed our last wing nut on at exactly 5:00AM Eastern Time. Took us 30 minutes to get out robot inside the crate, and tied down.
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
i got home about 2 in the morning and the robot is pretty much done... software still needs to work on it... also some adjustment needs to be done... and as far as shipping goes... we got together bunch off tools to send in with the crate... and going to pack that crate in half an hour today after school...
it was a great building season... good luck to you all and see you all @ competition... :) |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
269 was in the crate at 9:45PM last night, after some good old weight reduction and taking off what didn't work. I'll see my robot in St. Louis in 14 days!
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We are crated and at our sponsors dock (10:30 last night) Still might have a weight problem :(
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Shipping today at 1pm. we have spent many nights and still have more to do at the Chesapealke Regional. We can't wait to meet everybody! We are a rookie team #1446
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Congratulations to all who crated (or are in the midst of crating)! Getting through the six weeks is the first hurdle, and you're all well on your way to an exciting season.
Now, lets see some pictures of these beauties :D |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We put ours in the crate at 9pm last night, it's leaving this morning. Of course, an hour before we crated it a pot on our sensor got smashed to bits and a wire desoldered itself. Then half an hour later a Victor went kaput. Fixed the first two, but didn't have time for the Victor replacement...
That's what Thursday at Sacramento is for :) |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Team 708 isn't that bad off. Once we find out how much underweight we are, we'll see if we can add any bracing. We have a slight problem handeling sideways twisting and with skid steering. Other than that, we're pretty good. We stuck the bot in the box last night at 10:30 and shrink wrapped the crate. Luckey us that we can ship right from the school :p
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We got the robot in the crate and shrink wraped it at 11 PM last night. Crate shipping weight 340 LBS. Robot weight 116.5 LBS. In the past we have always had a weight problem, this year we we watched the weight on every part. We kept track of the robot weight on Autocad Inventor, very acurate. In Cad we were able to drill holes, mill out areas, and turn down parts. We could then see the weight reduction and figure out if it was worth it.

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Sparky needs some painting and all we have to do it pack it up and ship it off after lunch!

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
11pm for Team 1468
Had the basic dead reckoning auto down and some variations. Trouble with flaky interrupt pins on the RC is the only thing left to work on. 4 am for Team 358 Other than testing all the devices and test driving the basic drivetrain no time was left for testing our half dozen auto programs (it seems to work out that way every year). The fully completed robot was driven once - right into the crate! The rookie team beat the pro team by 5 hours!;) Now with the robots finally gone I feel empty inside - wait, I just realized I haven't eaten in 12 hours. |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Team #365's robot, GizMOE, was crated last night at 11:05PM. We received confirmation that FedEx had picked it up at 11:00AM this morning.
GizMOE and the Miracle Workerz are looking forward to UNcrating exactly one week from today at the New Jersey Regional. Good luck and good competition to all! |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
I spent three periods today at school getting the crate together, my teachers were not very happy, but they understood. The bot is supposed to be shipped between 2:30 and 4:30, it was kinda sad to put the last side of the crate on.

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Our robot was shipped today at about 2:30 this afternoon. And am I glad. No more meetings untill VCU. Now i can catch up on homework and sleep. YEAHHH. I just hope our robot and crate make it to VCU in one piece. And then it is on to Annapolis then to Atlanta and finally back home. The Fed-Ex guy was cool he was amazed about the number of robots that are going through BWI this week, But we were the only box in the truck, plenty of breathing room for our bot.
Always, the kid in the red hat Team 836 |

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
that is weird.

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
our robot has been gone for about half hour now
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Our's was crated at approximately 11:51 and 15 seconds. (Very aproximate ;)) Only one of our five autonomous modes was tested.
It was pickuped up at around 3:00. --EDIT-- Picked up |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
The RoboDevils are pleased to announce the "birth" of Luci!!
She weighed in at 129.5 pounds last evening at 2:20 AM. At exactly 2:11 PM this afternoon she was swaddled in stretch wrap and sent on her way to St. Louis. (OK we swaddled the crate not the robot..) We were first on the truck, but the driver said there were several more robots yet to be picked up. ... and now it's time for about 36 straight hours of sleep ... zzzzzzzzzzzz... :o |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
just got our bot crated up... with the last side of the crate it seemd that all the memories were sucked out, the late nights, the smell of hot metal, burining silicon, the total confusion, slight orgnization, crimping, recrimping, building and rebuilding. getting every last detail right.
lol i think i get a little to into this. i realy have nothing to do with my self now that this is over... homework? whats that??? oh i know, i could spend the week writing our atonomus mode!! warhawks chimara shiped at 3:45pm crated at 2:45pm e.s.t. |

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We shipped ours..
and considering it still doesn't move, i'd say we have quite a bit of work to do at the regional.. although all our subsystems work pefectly... I think we did things in the wrong order :ahh: |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
We crated at noon and packed up the robot and batteries. We then thought we would be clever and drive the robot to our FEDEX facility. When we got inside we found out that they do not accept any packages over 150 pounds. So we scrambled to call the freight pick up and got our robot loaded from in front of the school at 4:35pm. Now I can breath again!!!! So lesson learned- Don't be clever just call and get it picked up. :yikes:
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Since I've been sitting in bed sick, I have no idea if or when our robot was shipped -- but I'm sure happy that it's gone :)
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
FedEx told us they'd be here between 3 and 5 in the afternoon... We started welding the final pieces on the frame at 3 PM, and just as luck had it, the FedEx guy walked right in at 3:10... And then we discovered that a brace in our crate wouldn't allow our robot to go in fully, so after much chaos Miss Daisy sped away...

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
449 shipped, but just barely. We crated at 7pm wed, fully driving, all systems opperational. Pictures:
http://www.mbhs.edu/~aajohnso/robo04/ Latest are at "final tests". Now, here's what i did today: Only two people showed up to the robot meeting , as we had already crated, so i left. As i was leaving, i saw our treasurer in the hall, so i started talking to her about our financial situation. One of our mentors came by and asked if the crate went out. I had no clue. So i run down to the dock. As i'm going down that back hall i start thinking "have some faith, it will have shipped". Well it hadn't. So i call our main teacher sponsor, Dr. D, and run back to the room to talk to the other teachers. I determine that due to a mixup, no one had called FedEx. It's now 3:30. So i call Dr. D back, get the account number and such, and call up fedex. Their automated system thought it was going to be picked up from some other location (possibly we got someone else's label). After talking to two people, and waiting on hold, i get them to arrange a pickup. They then ask for the ship to zip code. I had no clue, so i run back to the loading dock and read it off of the crate. They sent a truck, and said "It'll be there by 5:40 or 6". I'm thinking oh crap, it has to be sent by 5. But there wasnt anything she could do. I go back to the room, and decide that i should probably try and meet the fedex guy so that there arent any problems. I call fedex back to have them give me a call when the guy gets there, and after like 5 min. of searching through their computer the guy finds the order and adds the phone number. At 4:40 i get a phone message, saying that he is here, but there is a car in the way and he can only wait around for 10 min. So i sprint out there to talk to the guy, we made an announcement to try and find the owner of the car. As we're waiting i'm trying to talk to him to keep him interested and there as long as possible. At 4:46 the car got moved. I started thinking "wouldnt it be cool if we shipped at 4:49?" (we are team 449) but alas it took him until 4:53 to get the crate in the truck. So the robot made it on the truck, with 7 min. to spare. Disaster avoided. The fedex guy said that he had picked up one other crate that day, and other drivers had picked up a bunch more. Everyone on the phone also seemed to know about it. Guess they got a lot of calls lately. |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
FedEx guys shows up at 10:30AM (early).
(I was not happy) Sent him away and told him to come back later. (he was not too happy) First team got pickup at 3:30pm. Second and third team got pickup at 4:00pm. Fourth team got pickup at 6:30PM! (Team4 was definitely not happy) Took the team captains & coaches to dinner and celebrated at Applebee! (Everyone was happy.... except the guy who paid ...me not happy with the bill) This was a tough day..... but I'm happy it is over. :) |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Shipped today. I miss it already.

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Our robot shipped around noon today. I'm so sad that it's gone. Now what will I do after school? Stupid drummer lives to far away to just go to his house so my band can rehearse.. OH! Homework... Yeah, maybe I should catch up a little. I can't wait for UCF. From what I hear from Ms. O (mentor leader) the autonomous mode works, and every thing is in order. I'm glad about that. Snow kept me from getting out there to see it shipped off. Does anyone else have nightmares about the fed ex truck never making it to the competition? I'll worry every night until March 11th. *sweat drop* Lol. Well It'll be okay I'm sure.

Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
Shipped yesterday sometime around 1 pm.
|
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
The one word I have heard about a dozen times from my team was "Airbills??"
Arghh... I guess our robot did ship on time, but not under the free credit provided by FIRST... Lost airbills = $700 bill to ship robot from NJ to CT... Live and learn people... Live and learn... |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
I would like to announace that for the first time in team 521 history :ahh: we had our last screw into the crate before the FEDEX truck showed up ( often the robot isn't even in)!!!!! The last sheet of wrap was cut at appox. 2:47 and the robot was officially off of our hands at 3:56. At the time of ship we weighed apporx. 129 and had "functional" dead reackoning for both sides of field and a line tracker. All that we should have to be doing in the pits is fine tuning! :yikes:
P.S. best of luck to everbody this year and to all those with shipping woes my heart goes out to you as we have been there before all to often. |
Re: Finally! Who has shipped?
1293 was in the hizzouse at about 10:30 making the final rounds of shrink wrap.
Actually, we were out of the hizzouse. We were just outside the lab where we were building, standing in SLEET and working on securing the robot and the small bags of parts by the high beams of my Civic. I believe that 1293 will need about 20-30 minutes of final prep--we have to mount our protection (the front off a retired Piggly Wiggly shopping cart), and get our LEDs working the way we want 'em to. Oh, and get the numbers on the robot. I think that's about all we have to do...oh, and tell the visiting teams how to survive Columbia, SC. (We're gonna be at the Palmetto regional in the mah-velous Colonial Center, all of ten minutes away from Irmo High School--slightly longer for the rest of 1293's better halves.) |
