Those are really good! Are they 3DS? How long did they take to model? What did you use as a reference, just a picture?

I'm a senior, but this was my first year helping with the animation (my younger brother has been doing it). I modelled the 2004 FIRST field in POV-Ray, and later transferred over all the measurements into 3DS for our animation. (The POV-Ray still renders are better though.) I've seen better models of the field in some of this year's animations, but I think ours is pretty good. Here are some high-res stills:

well, for the M4, i just found a side view of it and started modelling. For the enzo, I found some blueprints at onnovanbraam.com and spline modelled it. I'm redoing it though, as an actual enzo this time, with a little more attention to detail and stuff. I was on a deadline for that one, so ya know. Im also working on an APU from the matrix. Thats gonna be sweet when its done ;)

I like that building Thetadot. are the tiles a bumpmap or the actual model? the shadows darken it up nicely.

WOW>.... Theta dot!!! the first building is amazing!!!! the rest are okay...but the building is fantastic amazing etc..... very very detailed....

The enzo is nice but the windshield slopes in more, also the "nose" that goes down the middle of the hood is narrower , there are holes in the hood, and it has wheels ....
The interior is very nice but the body needs some tweaking..

i'll post pix in a sec...

I am truly amazed, particularly at the cars. I know this is a dumb question, but how can you model a car so perfectly? Do you have measurements to work from?

lol, yea, blueprints...
i've tried several times using blueprints... no success..
The farthest i got was splining a Mercedes M-class..
I couldn't figure out how to "skin" it...
maybe this summer i'll try to work on it some more.

If you're not going for accuracy, box modeling is an easy way to go.

Re: 3D Model Showcase

Ya i know, Salik, i already restarted the body design and stuff, this time with wheels, and I'm doing it with more attention to detail and such since I have all the time i need now. Your renders are nice, are you using Vray? The only thing i would suggest is to increase....whatever it is because the reflections and such on the renders appear jaggedy. I like the car alot. The Zonda is an awesome car, I remember it from project gotham 2

also i have a question about the building....did you make it up or is it based on a real life building.... if so whats building is it???? It looks pretty kewl

ThetaDot 01-03-2004 00:29

Re: 3D Model Showcase

I take criticism from people I know and whose opinions i respect.

I do not believe that building exists. I worked from a picture which seemed to be a painting. I did make changes in several places, but no I did not make it up. It was an exercise in architectural visualization, so i took a concept and then.. added an extra dimension. It took me about 36 hours and I did not scan the picture and model the parts as they appeared exactly in the image. I just had this little picture in my hand basically and worked 'freehand' for lack of a better word.

-PauL- 01-03-2004 21:24

Re: 3D Model Showcase

well, after redoing this car about 4 times already, I find that Box modelling is the way to go. when you extrude by the same increments each time, you get a consistency that would take at least 10x the amount of time if you spline model it. I know with the enzo, you need that consistency for the front to fit perfectly in all the views, or you'll have it perfect in one and suck in the other. anyway, i always find myself Poly-splining it, so to speak. ill make the cage, then go back and poly model parts i dont like to get it perfect. It all depends on what you like.

to thetadot, it's good to have people to criticize your work, whether they know alot or nothing, or are good at max or not, you cant judge your own work. You'll always find things wrong with it, or you'll think its perfect when theres so much more you can do to make it better.

JamesWu 01-03-2004 21:56

Re: 3D Model Showcase

Theta and Paul...If your models are for real I am amazed at your skill. Also Salik does have a point about your person face looking a bit weird. The ears look fine but the eyes are too narrow. But the eyes are the right distance apart from each other. Also the head has a shape that is too slanty. It looks like \ The face juts out at the bottom. But it is the best looking head that i have every seen a student make. I think students aren't skilled enough to use humans in their animation because they are one of the most difficult things to make. Not only do they have to look good but they have to be animated well. With a few adjustments and a body for the head, and of course a good skeletal rig and good animation skills you could prove me and everyone wrong. Since the deadline for the animation is past, I'd like to see you do a out of FIRST project and really excel at 3d art.

Re: 3D Model Showcase

did you create a spline cage, then used patches?
the trouble i get into when i attempt @ modelign a car is setting up the blueprints. They never seem to match up.
i'm currently working on a porsche carrera gt 2004, and there are some details that dont match up. Or maybe i'm not setting up the images right.
Can anyone see what i'm doing wrong?
I first create three planes that are the same size as the ref images, i convert those into polgyons and create a new face on the back. That way, i can have both the rear and front side ref images on one plane. Then i usually create some guidelines just to make sure certain details match up.
Like so: here
Maybe the blueprints aren't detailed enough or accurate...

The farthest i've gotten is this
any suggestions?

nice job paul...looks improved............I especailly like the rims they are just about perfect .......... it still look dif to me than the real Enzo....maybe cuz there are no headlights / windshield yet.......i guess i am a tuff judge cuz i am a car enthusiast..
There are supposed to be air dams on the hood of the car...that is the probly the problem...also the rear parts near the wheels are more well defined a lot like the front ones..

Mconte.. if that machine gun is just going to be put in the helicopter, there may not be any need for tons of detail. Unless you intend to have close ups of the gun, Just texture map all the details, it's easier and will save you time.

I agree with what you guys are saying, but there are going to be some close up shots, plus I might try to sell it on TurboSquid when I get it finshed (you never know, i could make some money!). I don't really worry about render times either, I actually have a render farm set up here at home (only 3 computers, but still good) so times don't matter that much, that scene there took about 4 min to do on my computer, not on a farm......

I finally uploaded a small animation that I did in September 2003 for a Latin project based on the Pharos Lighthouse. I had only one week to make the lighthouse, render, and edit the whole video together. So needless to say, this isn't my best work. Hell, i didn't even make the envioment, those who installed the Max5 sample files might reconginze the scene, its the file named "island". Since i didn't have time to put togther a whole envioment, I just modeled the lighthouse and put it into the scene.

5.4mb, WMV format

My latin teacher was so impressed by it, he gave me a two month heads-up for our next project, and I am now currently working on modeling the Roman Colisseum. It will have crowds, gladiators, and emporers giving the thumbs up or down. Plus some cross sections and diagrams. I might start a new topic soon updating you guys on that....

Re: 3D Model Showcase

hey, austin
Your models are good, i mean too good to believe that it's actually modeled by you, a high school student. The model of the building especially gave me the suspicion. Also I recognized there was too much of difference of the quality of the models between your team animation, and your personal project. If those those models were created by you, then i suppose this would be a indirect way of a compliment, if not, you should feel the guilt going through your body right now. If those models are really your work, then you should forget being a high school student, the FIRST, and just send an application to some professional companies, and post in cgtalk, cuz i guarantee that you will get plugged.

That's not really a true statement, given the time alloted, Austin's was amazing, and personal work flows much better than things you do professionally, trust me, I've found that while doing architechtural visualization for a local architecht. Personal work is much more powerful because you know exactly what you want, and you can just do it, you don't have to wait to hear from your employer about what to do next, or what weird and funky furniture they want.

Re: 3D Model Showcase

There are different things i like about personal projects and proffessional projects. Personal projects gives you all the time you need, and you don't have to worry about the dreaded "deadline" always hung over your shoulders. However, I feel that I have more motivation for a proffessional project over a personal. During those 6 weeks of robotics, there was always something that kept me going even when I was like "ah, screw this." We actually had a joke going that we were in a sweatshop, and our animation mentor was the overseer, so to speak. When im doing a personal project, I feel like quiting if there's something I can't do. I never really go research it, I just go play some UT2004 and let my anger out on the other players. Maybe it's just me, but I think there's more motivation during those 6 weeks because you start to think of what it would be like if you win.

Wow... I am speechless.

I am still wondering how you can model this. I am still working my way around the software, and just recently learned hown to us NURBS. (I really need some help modelling my head the way the official tutorial shows.)

How many polys is this?

MConte05 28-04-2004 16:25

Re: 3D Model Showcase

Right now the current count is about 500k polys.....

The way I modeled this is as followed:
  • Created an ellipse that was the proper dimensions (620x513)
  • Lofted the crossection along the ellipse
  • Created stairs and doorways
  • Used Booleans to carve out stairs and doorways
  • Created one arch segment
  • Used Edgespace to place them around the arena symetrically
  • Same thing for the poles

I then applied a cylindrical tiled texture to the arena, but I am currently working on a higher-quality texture (since the tiling is quite obvious in some pics) using the Texporter. The real challenge for me is modeling, texturing and animating the gladiator.....

Also, does anyone have any extensive knowledge using Character Studio's crowd simulator?

did u model those statues?

MConte05 28-04-2004 21:20

Re: 3D Model Showcase

No, they are actually a free model from TurboSquid.com, it was like 50,000 polys, so I optimized it down to minimum details. I would love to make my own statues (and feel I can) but due to time restrictions I have to use some other stuff.....

Its nice man, keep it up. I like your lighting on it. Btw, i worked some more on my enzo, and tried a new method of lighting. Hope you guys like it ;)

I never really paid attention to this thread, but now since I am getting into animation stuff, I decided to take a look. I am just speechless at the work you guys have done. They are simply awesome. Keep the good work.

Re: 3D Model Showcase

Here are some things I finished for work the other day.

I'm decently happy with things, but not really since I didn't have control over furniture or lighting (the architect I work for decided what he wanted to look like, I just put it into 3D, I didn't have any input.)

There's also a bedroom, but I'm not at home right now and don't have it uploaded.

Those are very professionally done.. nice job.. you seem to know a great deal about lighting and how it functions..

Re: 3D Model Showcase

Sorry for the double post.. recently i've been learning to model a little more accuratly with just one object rather than many objects combined.. So here's my first REAL creation w/ modelling... This is a beta version of a MP5 that i'm creating for a game modification i'm working on ;)

Enjoy

What game are moding??? It looks pretty good so far, and what's the poly count on it??
A scene I did for my English 11 class over "Of Mice And Men". Tell me what you think.

Yeah, so here's the truck i modeled with Joe Donaldson when i was in highschool. I think we did it when we were Sophmores.

It's still a work in progress tho.

Also attached is the model of the field i did last year.

I have been modeling some roller coaster cars for fun lately. They are a B&M Floorless model. Only hardend coaster-freaks would know who they are :p

Very nice.. I love the chair's detail.. very well done..

The game i'm hopefully modding soon will be a Battlefield: Vietnam / Battlefield 2 Mod. Can't say name of the mod because it has not been annouced officially yet.. still doing planning.. but thanks

Re: 3D Model Showcase

I think you can raise the poly count on that mp5 if you're looking to import it into BFV or BF2. If you end up using that in BF2, shouldn't you wait and see if that gun is being included anyway? I was under the impression that it would have all modern weapons. *shrug*

Here's an M41 that i modeled from Aliens:

I was getting lazy towards the end and didn't put any work into the extendable stock.

nice work matt hallock... i esp. like the reflections... the lightings pretty good too... except the wood parts the ceiling rafters look a bit flat toned....not that i could do better just saying.....
PCole the mp5 looks good but only for a 3rd person model (not for the 1st person) it is not detailed enuff

Yay!! This thread came back up.

I want you all to look at this picture, and tell me if you think it is rendered, or a real picture? I found it on the internet.

http://www.jengajam.com/r/Waterbed-Img
Wheter or not it's fake, or real, it's still cool, don't you think?

Definitely rendered. But still very cool. I'd like to have a bed/sleeping area like that except I'd be afraid of 1. geting out of bed and falling into the water and 2. bacteria and such in the water. LOL

Re: 3D Model Showcase

It is rendered; however looks real nice. The thing that gave it away was the water. Make that look real and it will be near impossible to tell.

For all you folks who like to recreate cars from blueprints, thought you may enjoy this.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...p-8815/c-10101

of course, they don't allow you to see a larger image.. so you are stuck with a postage stamp sized blueprint to work from..

I guess they want you to buy it to get the actual dimensions..

This is a wonderful thread, I'm very impressed with some of the work here. I was wondering if I could get feedback on a head I modelled the other day:

The link to some pictures is www.djmelon.gotdns.com/jake/human

I'll be doing ears and more detail soon.

Some random particle effects I did....

1920x1200 renders, motion blur and glow done in Video Post. Render time about 5 minutes with 3 passes for the motion blur.
