I learned that there is difference between being a college mentor and an engineering mentor. The latter is significantly more strenuous and tiring (yet still loads of fun :D ). As a recent grad. I salute all the engineers in this program that put in all the time and effort to make their teams a success.

Our team learned the importance of careful design before construction. We spent three days making custom gearboxes only to find out that they didn't fit...so we went back to the annoying right-angle gearboxes from the kit.

I learned that being the lead mentor, one of the designers, a fabricator, a delegator, a shipping liaison, and a 20 year old “college” student (among other things) should never be attempted ever again by anyone. I learned that whenever I bought my team sodas they would, without exception, be found at random places in our room in various degrees of fullness. I’ve learned that despite my wishes and hopes, a team without faculty and/or administration support is doomed to fold, despite the machining and engineering resources it may have. Oh. I also learned how to use a lathe and a milling machine last fall, but I guess that doesn’t count because that wasn’t the build period.

No, really, I'm not disappointed...

I know this is a 'what we learned' thread, but I disagree with that. Our mentor quit during week 2 and our school administration told us that we couldn't go on because they were worried about the "Integrity of the school," and we still completed a bot.

So I guess I learned that every snag can be overcome.

I also learned that one cannot trust someone to work on the 'bot who has never touched the 'bot before.

I don't mean to be offensive, but what your team went through this build period and what my team has gone through the past few years sound like completely different experiences. You're on a rookie team, right? It's understandable that your mentors might burn out as rookies. It's a really hard game, and it's always tough doing this for the first time. It's also understandable that the administration in your school might find it easier to just give up when it faces a little adversity. 258 has been around since 1999, and should have had a foundation in the faculty / administration by now. An example of our on campus presence (or lack thereof) was when I went to pick up our 3 free pneumatic cylinders from the school's office, the school secretaries had never heard of the school's robotics team. Without faculty / administration support there is no new blood infused into your team. We have more students on our team from the San Jose Unified / San Jose City College: Middle College program than we do from Lincoln High School, where our team was started and meets. For the past 3 years we've had a high point of 8 high school students on our team. No offense, but building a robot isn't a major obstacle to overcome no that there are kit provided gearboxes and prewritten code. My team's mentors (5 college students, 2 engineers, and 2 machinists) could design and build a robot for our team, but as my team has discovered the past few seasons, getting more kids on the team and getting faculty / administration support doesn't necessarily follow from building a successful robot. In my opinion, we're talking about apples and oranges here. I stand by my original statement.

And, um, don't start putting 13 hour days in until you have to, or otherwise you will be wanting to go home at 6 on the night before ship. And your grades will look like you've had a serious case of senioritis.

I'll drink to that! This build period has been terribly exhausting, but I had a great time and helped build a machine that I'm really proud of (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pi...gle&picid=6603, if anyone's interested).

Things I learned this year:
-It is possible for one person to drink 10 liters of caffeinated soda within 1.5 weeks.
-The hammer is more versatile than it appears.
-Safety goggles cast an invisible field of protection surrounding the wearer.
-The bandsaw conquers all.
-Snickers + Mountain Dew = the true breakfast of champions
-Batteries work better when charged.
-FIRST is not an acceptable excuse for a one-week delay in handing in an 8,000-word senior research paper.

I learned that steel gears aren't necessarily as strong as you'd think, and shear teeth rather painfully under shock loads. And thus, that transmissions should be designed carefully and robustly and using the actual gear strength equations. And built and put on a chassis early for testing. Just look what we did to the gear:

I learned to never, ever believe the students working on Chairman's Award when they say every thing is in hand without demanding PROOF. Otherwise, after 4 months time, they just may turn over three quarters of a page of writing with grammar and spelling mistakes in every line instead of the expected four pages of rough but editable material. I also learned that if you, yourself, have a good memory, lots of notes and dated photographs and another adult who is really good at writing proposals and willing to stay up late editing (thanks Christine!) you can lock you and your Chairman's group in a room, the night before it's due, with an indecent amount of sugar, and come up with something that is not too bad... however, the sugar hangover the next day will leave you whimpering at the slightest noise...

I learned meeting tommorow usually meant meeting later today.

I learned two hour from home is two far for the weekday but and barely close enough for the weekends.

If I started a FIRST team here my grades would suffer. I'm sure I have one of the higher robotics per day working average on my teams. This includes 17 1/2 and 15 hour work days.

I'm easily addicted to CD. I've pushed the portal button more times than I would like to admit.

Every team should have a food coordinator and love that person and never let them go. You can get three meals a day from robotics.

I learn something amusing every year...

2002: The first five weeks are inconsequential.

2003: The difference between 98 lbs. and 129 lbs. is smaller then you would think.

2004: Practice shots ALWAYS make it in more then real shots.

agreed ... .but its all worth it in the end ...

i also learned that:
- sleep is not a neccessity ...
- robotics is life
- homework can wait
- parents get angry when grades slip
- duct tape can be scary when used inappropriately
- engineers become a lot of fun at midnight
- never let me sing when i am really hyper because i am guaranteed to ruin your favourite song
- engineers get upset when their pizza is delivered two hours late
- i will not be a good wife because i cannot solder (but i can cook and clean)
- after six weeks you have made some of the best friends ever
- classes are optional when you have more important stuff to do
- we have some of THE greatest engineers and mentors on our team
- knocking on a door works better than running into it (you dont want to know the story behind this one ... trust me on that)
- when having a race .. watch out for stairs ..... especially if you are wearing 5 inch heels .......
- once your team finds out you are terrified of spiders .. they will bug you about it forever
- I LOVE FIRST (okay i knew that before ... but i had to say it again)

** i know its not one .. but its what i learned **

/edit: i also learned that you can touch both terminals on one of the charged batteries at the same time and NOT die .......

1) Professional help isn't needed
2) We can beat up any other team
3) How to take a hollow aluminum tube, jam a connector on one end and hook it to the exhaust of our pneumatics system, file down a steel rod to a point on one end, place inside aluminum tube, compress 120 psi into the tanks, open exhaust valve. Denting the light in the CAD room.. Shooting it through our pizza boxes.. Creating a lethal weapon (for real) and having our teacher laugh when he sees it shot into wood.

hmmm...let's see...

1) Pizza guys aren't used to delivering pizza to schools, ESPECIALLY at 8 o'clock at night (a pizza place actually hung up on us b/c they thought it was a prank call)
1a) mental note for next year: must get a pizza place as a sponsor....
2) make sure you have time for error
3) scissor lifts don't work well for lifting a robot
4) pneumatics work better
5) prepare for the season before it starts

This year I learnt the joys of officially mentoring. Not only do you get to exercise the iron fist of power, but you get to influence the little things in their lives sometimes too. I'm proud to know that he'll never fall asleep in class again as long as he eats his balanced breakfast of dew and snickers.

Hmmmm....I wonder if you could make that into a smoothie?

Oh yeah! I also learnt that if you absolutely need it here tomorrow and you pay extra double super expensive shipping and pray to the UPS gods - you will not get your order until a week later! And if you do get it on time, it's going to be steel instead of aluminum.

Tighten the bolts that hold the 18 inch sanding disk EVERY time you use it.

MAPP gas torch w/o oxygen can be forced to work (with some modifications to the nozzle)

DO NOT try to bend plexi, nylon, Acrylic, polycarb etc w/ a MAPP gas torch without oxygen. If you do try that, do it outside. TOXIC FUMES

Keep your fingers away from things that move quickly and/or are designed to cut things.

Depressurize/power down everthing when working on it

Do not expect classmates to put in estra aftershool hours.

Do not restrict team members to persons in the class.

Do not eat locktite, antifreeze, or buffing compound (kevin and james)

Carbide wood blades cut aluminum in a chop saw (scary)

Table saws cut aluminum (and then throw it across the room)

Tighten the chuck on the lathe

Label every thing

Put everthing away

Take everthing metal and large away from Kevin when he is trying to "caress" a part into a hole. (unless you want the part destroyed and then thrown across the room in anger)

Grinders like to eat Kevin's keystock

You can't drill 10 mm 68 rockwell hardened steel shafts with normal HSS bits. The steel shatters.

T-nuts are annoying
Drop-in T-nuts are AWSOME

Do not let Rasiik tighten stuff you want to get apart again

Good luck this year!!!

Ours works great!!

I learned that 12.5" polyurethane wheels are actually only 11.5" in diameter. And for some odd reason, they don't make 13.5" polyurethane wheels!! Ask Skyway??

I also learned that your kids grow a lot in 6 weeks when they're only 2.5 and 1.5 years-old respectively. But they'll still love ya'!!

And most importantly, I learned that a word of encouragement and a pat on the back from a teacher/mentor means a lot to a FIRST Robotics student and goes a long way...

I have to agree 100%. FIRST really was life and I miss it so much.

I realized just how much time I have on my hands during the 6 weeks that all you lucky FIRSTies got to build and sweat over your beloved creation. I miss that joy.

College schedules don't help at all for attending regionals.

My experiences from FIRST really has helped me so far through the college classes that I've taken.

Standing back and just watching is so hard. But watching the growth of future/starting teams is fun.

I won't have that joy of driving at regionals anymore :(

I learned that...
-CNC is good
-You can make 7 tooth engagement sprockets
-You get what is given and you have to do your best.
--Good thing what was given is great!

I got to be a mentor this year and I loved it. Really, there is so much to learn, I still haven't stopped!

1. Castor wheels aren't as bad as our team once thought
2. Gearboxes are cool compared to chains
3. Really funny things happen at the shop after 1 am.
4. Each trip to the hardware store is like a trip to disneyland.
5. Rookies keep me young.....

Dam it drove me crazy trying to screw in hex heads through the wheel hub. I learned that being involved in FIRST lends to the creation of poetry about serpentine belts.

One thing I learnt in the preseason - posting interesting pictures of oneself or antagonizing someone into pasting your head on a famous person's body (coughbillgatescough) is just good fun on CD. If you got a laugh out of my picture, don't feel bad - it means you're normal.

How easy it is for one of your teammates to set the controller on fire :(

That teams pull together when things get rough.

I learned that you could scrap a whole mechanism two nights before ship, and still have it work like you did it 6 weeks ago. And also don’t let freshman use power tools.

One thing I learned this season is that no matter what, if a team sets it's differences aside, sits together and gives democracy a shot, you can accomplish a lot. You get great results that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :)

I learned not to conect both battery termanals, on the robot battery, with a peice of metal.....I mean....uh..I did no such thing. I just accedentally held a peice of metal which kinda touched both termanals, which sent sparks flying everywhere. lol, it was awesome
