The start of school

I've been wanting to know for a long time. I know that we are all from all over the U.S. So, when does everybody start school in the fall??? We start on August 14, this comming year. I especially want to know about the High Schools.

Clark Gilbert 27-06-2001 23:17

EHHS starts:

Thursday, August 30, 2001...

Not proud of my school's "mascot" and will therefore refrain from sharing...

Anne Lam 28-06-2001 05:26

it used to be in september, but this year it will be on july 30th ...can you believe it? summer vacation is getting shorter and shorter... :(

Jessica Boucher 28-06-2001 07:16

WHS....

....September 4th, I think (all I know is that its the first time in like a decade that theyre starting after Labor day)

But I'll be at Babson, and I move in August 26th.

WHS is the Indians (which reminds me, ask team #38 about their mascot, the Chiefs, and about the "Save the Chief" campaign), and Babson is the Beavers (but what do you expect, its a business school, they dont care too much about sports)

Matt Leese 28-06-2001 07:51

September 5, although that is college. RIT is the Tigers too. We actually had one at one time (in the '50's). We get the Tiger in Tigerbolt from RIT.

Matt who's still trying to figure out what a Tigerbolt is....

Mimi Brown 28-06-2001 08:46

GHHS......

I think we are starting on August 29th. Id rather start earlier, and get out earlier because we always end up getting out in the middle of June.

~Mimi

Becky Allen 28-06-2001 15:56

Hendrix College starts September 18th. I move in on September 15th.
And we are the warriors. We used to have like an Indian chief as our mascot, but that was decided to be very un-PC so we are without a mascot picture at the moment. They are trying to make the emblem a squirrel. Yes...I live in Arkansas.

-becky..who sighs and rolls her eyes at the sight of a warrior squirrel

Mike Soukup 28-06-2001 15:57

ummmm....never :)

Lora Knepper 28-06-2001 17:50

Wow..August...July?!? That's nuts! In Quincy it was always after Labor Day...and even RIT, I don't move in till the 2nd of September (before Matt b/c I'm a first year). So again I say... WOW!

I thought it was crazy that people are starting so late. We've always started school in the middle of August. I like going to school earlier so we can get out earlier.

Actually you move in after me but I'm going back to MD to referee the NASA/GSFC Post-Season Competition Labor Day weekend.

Matt

Christina 28-06-2001 20:19

hmm...

I start class on August 27th. Usually it's after Labor Day, but alas, not this year. Although they make up for it, by giving us a week off for Thanksgiving. Fun stuff...

~Christina šoš

EddieMcD 29-06-2001 13:25

I go back Sept. 6.

*Ducks just in time to avoid a can of SPAM being thrown at him*

I actually like having all of August off. We go back to school when it cools down, and we get out just before it heats up.

mike o'leary 30-06-2001 22:48

i actually avoid thinking about it...but i believe its sometime around september 15th or so

Carolyn Duncan 02-07-2001 18:01

Well, my old high school starts after Labor Day and gets out in the middle of June, we graduated this year the day before Father's Day. That's in one of the tourist areas of Virginia. I am taking a few college courses this year, not full-time just cc and hope for trasfers to wherever I decide to enroll. I'll start sometime in August I'm sure.
C~ya,
Carolyn

Tom Fairchild 03-07-2001 00:52

Virginia Schools

I'm not ENTIRELY sure about this, but at least sure enough to post. ;) Virginia High Schools by law must start after Labor Day. The State needs our wonderful youthfull bodies to work at all the tourist spots in VA Beach, Busch Gardens, etc. I'd be upset, but personally I like starting late!

~Tom~, who only has another year left *whew!*

Amadkow 03-07-2001 11:16

Here is Bakersfield, CA school usualy starts on the last monday in August

patrickrd 04-07-2001 16:31

I start school on Aug 30, although that is a College. Most high schools in central massachusetts start late august. Ithaca High School in New York starts the wednesday after labor day.

Patrick

Carolyn Duncan 07-07-2001 23:57

About that VA law Tom mentioned... I don't think it is a law. I know somw people all over the state who start school before labor day. It really depends on where you live as to when school starts. People in Roanoke go back to school in August sometime. There was talk of making a law about when school starts, but that got dropped like a ton of bricks. Too much of a loaded issue I guess. You know how political VA is.

Carolyn

A. Leese 11-07-2001 12:27

My school starts August 13..we always start in August, just it's been earlier the last two years so we can get out mid-May. We would get out earlier 'cept we get all kinds of days out of school (about one Friday a month off and at least one early-release Wednesday per month..plus all the Jewish holidays). I like it, I guess.

~Angela who's stuck going back to school a week early for marching band camp *cringe*

Amadkow 11-07-2001 14:32

Don't wory your not alone I have to start school early too because of marching band. What do you play in the band?

Tom Fairchild 12-07-2001 20:01

Nothing wrong with band camp.

~Tom~, who has to be a responsible drum major during his two weeks of band camp.

A. Leese 12-07-2001 20:09

To all the band nerds out there..

I play clarinet. I"m not an officer or section leader, just a band member. Go me! I could never be drum major b/c it's pretty much half based on musical talent, which I have none of. I could maybe handle the conducting, but having to walk backwards in a parade..forget about it. lol

~Angela who is proud to be a band nerd and a FIRSTer :)

Tom Fairchild 12-07-2001 20:21

LoL, I've started calling myself Nerd All-Star. Some may do fooball in the fall, and then soccer in the spring, but I've one up them. *in a big tough guy voice* "Yeah, yeah, I do band in the fall (captain, you know), and then robotics in the spring. Maybe a little academic bowl somewhere inbetween."

~Tom~, who likes to make jokes about jocks, since most of his friends are them. :D

I do "academic bowl" as you call it, as well (we know it better as Academic Team). I actually have some clout in a-team. I'm a captain. *listens for the "ooh..ahh.."* hehe Guess I'm a Nerd-All-Star, too.

Carolyn Duncan 14-07-2001 17:47

Gotcha all

My junior year of high scool my team got a new soccer coach (she was a real piece of work). Our team had won AA states the previous year so no one was really all that excited about the new coach and her ways. I became the bench captain, played only 93 minutes the whole season (90 minutes is letter requirement). Eventually I got to keep the stat books. Needless to say I told her what I thought aboout her (it wasn't very nice).
C~ya,
Carolyn whose nice to everyone, unless they make her mad (that wasn't what I was going for but it's forum friendly)

mike o'leary 14-07-2001 20:08

i do robotics...maybe throw in some intramural flag football (me and some of my friends from the rambots like jeff wong and mike corliss organize a team), ultimate frisbee, and thats about it. oh yeah and habitat for humanity

Carolyn Duncan 15-07-2001 11:45

Habitat!

Habitat is a great thing to get involved with. I used to work with another group simmilar to Habitat, Housing Partnerships, before I moved. That was the closest thing we had. Way to go Mike!
C~ya,
Carolyn who likes to see people help each other.

mike o'leary 15-07-2001 14:31

ive had fun with habitat for humanity...even though i thought it was amusing when we found out we were helping build a house in duxbury, which is like i think the 2nd or 3rd richest town in mass...its disgusting how many million dollar-plus houses they have there...

Carolyn Duncan 15-07-2001 17:52

I know the feeling.

I used to live in Williamsburg, VA. One of the golf courses there is a PGA visit, and the President goes there, and movie stars, and... Then there are the other 2 neighborhoods with gates and security, not to mention the areas with 5 million dollar homes... It really is disgusting to see the money people waste. Especially when there are ghettos down the street. I didn't live in either area. I lived way out of town with the country bumpkins who are middle class.
C~ya,
Carolyn who likes to laugh at people who have more dollars than sense.
 :p
