Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

YES! There is a clue now! YEAH! Here it is, not an exact quote though:

I was at the science center yesterday and I saw something that reminded me of next year game.

Now, my guess is that it's either the giant pendulum or the giant rotating ball in the front supported by the water you can push. Either that, or the DNA strand or the telsa coil. :yikes:

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

hehe....A giant tesla coil in the middle of the field..."Place opponent here."

He said that it was something at the VCU Engineering School, not at the Museum.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

No, I'm pretty darn sure he said at the Science Museum. If it were my guess it would have been something on the first floor, we all know Dave is a space buff, to say the very least... But i'm leaning in the direction of something in that area, or the flight area. Does any one remember the beach ball floating over the air blower. I'm wondering if you have a bot that can place a ball in that or remove a ball from something like that is part of the game. Either that or it has something to do with the pendulum.

The beach ball exhibit you're describing is a demonstration of the Bernoulli principle -- that which makes flight possible.

Using that sort of exhibit in a game, though, would seem somewhat silly. It is typically very unstable and the ball will begin to oscillate back and forth in the air, eventually losing lift and falling off to the side.

Or maybe it involves paper airplanes. :ahh:

Stephen Kowski 06-03-2004 20:15

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

just more speculation nothing really substantial to go on.....they said toilet flange and we were stumped for a week...it is likely something he saw reminded him of next years game, but who's know it was an exhibit, he is just messing with you =)

could have seen a garbage can, it's round, therefore something in the game links with that......there is no telling what that statement meant best to just finish one year first....

Well I probably didn't hear it right. We were up most of the night keeping check on sick people. Got about two hours of sleep so I'm about to go lay down. Too tired...after all the screaming and yelling and coming so close...

To me, it seemed as though something in the museum gave him a thought and he came up with a game idea based on it.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

Wetzel might be right about the museum inspiring him, but he said he knows about next years game and what it is. It could be something about the collision balls possibly. Or maybe countless other things. Dont rely on me, check my misinfo post from b4 the season.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

He did say he knew what the game for next year was, but it seemed as though it was inspired by something in the museum. Lil' Lavery - Has Dave been to that museum before (and gotten an idea then)?

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

ok i'm not hear to burst anyones choppers about this. it was officially stated today by i believe mr.utaski at the NJ Regional that Dave will officially help design the games with dean and woodie. Thats and fact and is now well known after this year.

FIRST Frenzy : Raising the Bar - This is a two titled game there fore next year could be and not saying it will be a FIRST Frenzy : blank blank

So this could turn into a series.

However you guys just got done building and are now in the competition phase of the 2004 season, I think it's a lil too early to be posting rumors of 2005's game. You guys need to concentrate more on a stratedgy then on a new game. that is my best advice and im hoping i didn't hurt anyone by saying this. if i did i'm truly sorry but the "truth is the truth and that isn't a lie"

That's what I said to Heidi as we passed it on the way home. But I thought Dave said "in" the museum, but maybe he said "at" the museum.

PS: It was fun, at the end of the museum visit, when a bunch of us were running around the big rotating ball making it go really fast, then stopping it and making it go the other way. One of the students determined that we could stop it a lot faster if we ran around it with each person's hand in one spot, and slowly stopped our movement, instead of just trying to push on it while standing in one place.

I believe that this might be what he saw...but has he finally designed a game involving donuts?

Do you really already know? You might get some really good pictures or ideas before next years competition. Maybe even one based on the game.

Leave it to dave to design a robot contest with donuts in it..

Two sets of "donuts." You have to sort them into two two tubs on each side. The "donuts" with the IR beacons in them are label "Krispy Kremes" while the ones without IR beacon are "Any Other". They all look the same from the outside but it is what is inside that makes all the difference. Putting the wrong "donut" in the wrong tub will result in negative points while you will be given positive points for correct tub. In the middle there will be a giant donut ten feet in the air. You can choose to hang from it for 25 points. Also, you can instead choose to be the "donut hole" by sitting in the middle of the 10 ft high donut. The "donut hole" will gain an additional 50 pts.

The scoring will go as following:

Each team will be given a "free dozen Krispy Kreme certificate" for each baker dozen pts they score. The winning will gain an additional "certificates" for each half dozen "donuts" their opponent correctly label.

Seeding will go as following:

The team that presents the most certificate at the end of qualifying will be sent home. Turn down free Krispy Kremes, no way. The team with the greatest difference of "certificates" won minus "certificates" presented will be #1 seed and seeding will follow in this order.

Extend the autonomous period from 15 seconds to a minute and wear your hair nets.

I present this as my official 2005 game. It will be called FIRST Frenzy: Kreme of the Krop.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

That is a worthy game idea. But if it is donuts, I bet it will involve boxing them...and lots of bonus points for delivering them to him with even more bonus points if they can deliver more than he can eat.

Yeah..agreed. You could have a stack of premade folded boxes and the unfolded box. More point to fold the box, fill it, and deliver.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

But how would they stop Dave from eating all of the game pieces? Surely those IR beacons wouldn't be good for him...

Yeah, can you imagine all of those Krispy Kreme obsessed robots chasing him down. (IR beacons).....That must be the "Frenzy" part of it.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

This is kind of a 6 degrees of seperation thing. I have lived in Richmond for all but like 3 months of my life, so I know a little history and such of the place, not as much as some, but still enough. If you looked around behind the Seigle Center there were some train tracks that would dead end into buildings and such, and if you just look around Richmond, you see much of these strange things. Back like 6 or 7 years ago, the Science Museum of Virginia did some remodeling in the back of it. There were these old train tracks. Now for those that don't know SMVA was once one of the biggest train stations in the South, and probably the biggest hub for transportation from the South to the North and Washington DC. But in the remodeling, those bueatiful tracks were removed, but the loading platforms and shelters over them remain. My new theory, after seeing a picture of me sitting in the lap of my grandfather, while "operating" a front end loader that was pulling out some of the tracks, is that next years game might have something to do with tracks, a platform, a two fold task: getting up onto a 10 foot high something and then doing a task on it (from the shelters, don't ask), and still the pendulum. This clue might have more to do with the Museum's intresting past, and not just it's exhibits. I know there aren't many signs left of it's past around there, but if you look in certain areas, you will see them. Cool note, my grandfather's paving/construction company was contracted out to remove the old train tracks when I was little, that's why I have that picture, and if it hasn't been covered up my initals "MAI" are there in the back somewhere.

Thats very interesting. From what little I'v heard about dave it seems consistent with his personality to give this kind of obscure hint. It will be extremely fun to look back on this thread when the game is announced, and see who was right :D

kjohnson 07-03-2004 16:37

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

Maybe one robot has to package the donuts and place them on a conveyor belt (the track) and the other robot is at the other end and had to take them off and deliver them to the judges. Bonus points if they are still warm.

Aignam 07-03-2004 17:13

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

FIRST Frenzy : Doughnut Domination?

Robots must collect the most dougnuts that drop from a Conveyor Belt from above the player stations and place them in Krispy Kreme Boxes. Robots receive extra points for closing the box and delivering it to Dave.

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

I wouldn't be surprised that they have already designed the 2005 game. Remember that during kickoff, Dave said something along the lines of "get used to IR sensors, they wont be going away". Sounded like he already knew part of next years game at this years kickoff.

darn, I was hoping there'd be some game design contest like last year.

CrazyStarChick 07-03-2004 20:47

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

Hmmm... the doughnut game would be fun, but what would the human player do? Would they eat the doughnuts?? The more you eat the more points you get! yummmm... I'd like to be human player :p But ehh, why worry about next years game now, I'll worry about it next year, until then it's time to focus on this years game :)

We would have to hear whom the source is to trust this leak.

Anyways I would rather not know. Especially right now. They would just change the game if it got out. Oh..wouldn't that be horrible. They have a so called reliable "source" leak the game and then change it completely for kickoff. That would be great. Especially if the new game involved water and clowns.

It really doesn't matter to me, as I will be in college next year and not on a FIRST Robotics Team, well at least not building on one. Also, I won't reveal the source, maybe so FIRST won't 'magically' change the game.

beanbag chairs would be cool.....what do we have robots drinking sodas and watching TV in bean bag chairs or something...or maybe the players could do that...robot must be a waiter....gets bean bag chair and sets up stand for human ability to watch TV...sounds like lotsa fun

if it does involve bean bags the small ones...are we like designing a crowd control device of sorts...you know the po po's use those little bean bags guns to keep people under control...this is the future of FIRST...law enforcement

Re: Dave Lavery VCU Hint!

Hey guys, for all we know the game will be a bunch of robots playing Red Rover... How would the human player act in that regard? Autonomous would be infinitely more difficult to work out, of course, since you would have to synchronize with your alliance partenr... That would be a pain inthe seeding matches, having to switch every time. I'm personally leaning toward the pendulum theory myself.

Personally, I think it will have something to do with a platform a couple of feet up and you have to get up, the only way up is marked by an ir beacon, and the way up is blocked after the auton ends. *shrugs*
Who knows?
