Re: St. Louis Regional
Not sure why but in the past it seems that "some" vet teams have come to st. louis due to the large number of rookies present. (last year about half) A fair warning to those going to st. louis: The competition is very fierce for a rookie dominated regional. Our team has been there since it started two years ago and every year it has been the same. See past st. louis stuff.
I love that about st. louis! You can see alot of "new" ideas and people every year! Note: The prank monkeys are back! Yeah! |
Get chattin' St. Louis!
Hey what's Up? There needs to be more talk here! Who's goin'! Where yah stayin'! Let's show CDer's how awsome SL is! Do any rookies have questions? :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :)
|
Re: St. Louis Regional
The St. Louis Regional is amazing and good luck to all teams heading that way in March! I am now out of high school (at Iowa State University), but I was disappointed to see our home team 525 going to Chicago instead of St. Louis. St. Louis has been our home for the last two years and I have loved both times going down there.
To any rookie teams to St. Louis: You are going to have a blast!! :) |
Re: St. Louis Regional
If any rookies (or anyone else headed to SL) need help with any stuff PM me anytime! (I know there are alot in St. Louis!)

Re: St. Louis Regional
St Louis was definately fun in 2002 when we went in as rookies and came out as regional champs, haha...but no st.louis this year for us...nj is going to ca, even further...at least we wont take a bus this time!

Re: St. Louis Regional
We (547) went last year and had the best time! We are going back this year, and I can't wait! :)

Hope to see you all there! |
Re: St. Louis Regional
Team 933 (Rockford, IL) is going to St. Louis this year. Two years ago we went to St. Louis as a rookie team then last year we went to the Midwest Regional at Northwestern.

Re: St. Louis Regional
I know a lot of teams are looking at the FIRST assigned hotels in St. Louis this year and going, "GAAAACK!"
My wife researched other hotels in the area. We ultimately landed on the Towne Place Suites, which are about 1 mile from the competition venue and reasonably priced. Here is a core dump of the other information that she obtained. We do not advocate any of these hotel options. This is just some information to maybe save some of you some time. We have not investigated these properties for cleanliness, security, safety or any other attribute. -------------------------------------------------------------- my sources: hotels.com, expedia.com, travelocity.com or direct call All prices are for rooms with 2 queen beds. Hello everyone,
My first post!, YAY! anyway :ahh: This is my first year in FIRST, and this year i was elected Design Leader/Mech leader for team #931. Re: St. Louis Regional
Hi all,
This will be our 3rd year at St. Louis, we just keep coming back for more. It's a great place to compete and the people are real nice. It's nice to see some more WI teams coming down to play around. Best of luck to all, see you there! |

Re: St. Louis Regional
I remember the competition at St. Louis last year as being very good. The matches that I saw were definitely action-packed. However, as I recall, the staff at the venue were real rule nazis and wouldn't even let you eat your own food in the parking lot (unless you were inside of a vehicle). I think that this is one of the main reasons that my team decided not to return to St. Louis a second year...we are not prone to enjoy rule-nazis. Rules are good, and shoudl be obeyed, but rediculous rules are just that....rediculous.

How many drivers from last years St. Louis comp. are returning? This will be my 3rd and final year as our teams driver. :( :D
Just wonderin' who I'll be "running into" down in St. Louis |

St Louis Regional Status
I thought we could get a jump and start talking about the St Louis regional coming this Wed. After seeing the great games being played at the BAE and the VCU regionals this is going to be a great game. Also does anyone know if the St Louis regional will on a webcast like the BAE and the VCU.
Thanks and good luck in St Louis. Come by and talk to the Ubergeeks. |

I think seeing the Portland and VCU regionals will give other teams a huge head start, and we will all see the matches be much more competitive like the elim matches. Oh yeah, Team #93 will be attending for the first time and will be staying at the St. Charles hotel (I think). Good luck to all, lets make this regional the best that we can. |

Re: St Louis Regional Status
The Pike High School Robodevils will be there, and after you say hi to Amanda and the prankmonkeys, come to the next pit over to talk with us. We cannot wait to get out there and compete with some of the bots from the great teams we met last year. Good Luck to all!

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Correction to my post from before.
Our team will be staying at the 4 point sharaton hotel. |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Looks like I'll get to go help my team scout at STL on Friday and Saturday. One of the kids on our team has grandparents on the Illinois side and we will stay there and make the 20 to 30 minute drive to the competition on Friday and Saturday. I can't wait. Look like there will be some good teams.
|
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Alright! So... I'm here (Thursday night) in my hotel room. YAY!
Practice rounds didn't look so good to begin with. However, some of the matches at the end got pretty furious. Can't wait for the real stuff. I'd like to hear some comments from others, too. Perhaps we could have a little Chief Delphi get together? T967, Seth, will be there providing he isn't busy doin' what he do. NYACK has a pretty good competitor for the Spirit Award this year; 547 is whooping up some serious yell power. It's flipping noisy! -Zing |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Since Ricky can't get on Chief Delphi from where he is, he asked me to keep everyone updated for him.
He called a few minutes ago and said practice round today went well, for the most part. The teams at SLR are great - everyone is working together and helping other teams out. Ricky said 269 and 93 both practiced well, 93's human player is good. Overall, the competition looks to be a fun. The venue is ok, he said, with the exception of not being able to plug anything in, in the stands and outside the pit area (bad news for teams scouting with laptops and such!) The venue staff is pretty strict about that rule and FIRST rules. Ricky said that 269 is doing well. They had good practice rounds today, passed inspection and were just finishing up some last minute autonomous stuff when he called. Look for a second update tomorrow night!! |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Well, an update from team #1098, today was quite fun, lotta low scoring matches (one was 0-5 :ahh: ) and some incredibly close ones, like the one we lost (90-95 :ahh: ). But once again, Baxter Bomb Squad has an amazing robot, and a very ingenious way to get up onto the bar and the "shelf" thing. So far, only a few teams can actually get up to the bar and hang everytime consitantly, ours being one of them. Plus a lot of teams auto modes either don't work, or they don't have one at all, my team, 1098 was finally able to get our auto mode to work on the last game of the day (we ALMOST got it to work on our 3rd match, but.....we hit the wrong ball and released the other teams balls :yikes: ).
BTW, our team is giving our those annoying whistle/light/keychain things, I think FIRST has now banned anyone from using our whistles :yikes: I think..... But I am glad too, hard to drive with a whistle that sounds like your drivetrain burning out :D If you want to spot me, I am the driver for our team and wearing the Army "fishing hat". Plus I wear hearing aids if that makes a difference? |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
We are 5-0 2nd place to 650 hella robotics going into saturday comp. Low scoring, lots of ball matches, bar is important.
Saw A. Morrison running the queing area, Man She is Really Scrict!!!! :D :D :D Good luck too all! |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Yea, I think the final standings will really turn around in the last few rounds, even the teams who have lost (like 1098, we have lost twice) still are pretty high up in the standings, maybe its cause we are having pretty high scoring matches
|
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Yay for internet access...
Friday went well, we are 3-2, with the 2 losses being matches we should have won, and are 16th seed, hopefully moving up tommorrow...#16 BBS is looking stronger with each match..Its a fun time, and Dean is here!!! Congrats to our buddies #93 for winning Xerox Creativity and to Sean Schuff for the STL WFA Award......tommorrow will be fun! |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
What exactly does BBS do? big balls? small balls?
|
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Everything, for their automode, from what I remeber, they latched onto the goal and dragged it over to the chute and uncapped the 2x ball in the process. Then using wings they corral the balls in, and use a suction cup method for picking up the 2x ball. Plus they can get up onto the bar VERY fast.....
|
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Hey does anybody have pictures of BBS's robot this year? Is there a STL Regional web site with an image gallery that I can see the robots at?
|
Re: St Louis Regional Status
BBS uses giant cams on the side of their bot to do two things. One, grab the goal and two is to lift them selves up onto the platform. Only problem I can see is that while they are hoisted up on the cams they get ZERO traction. Once again they have a great auto. mode. 93 looks great! Their shooter is a real baller and they can fill up goals REALLY fast.
Good luck to all today! |

The indiana teams had a great showing here at st. louis.. 1024 won the imagery award for our great looking machine... we were ranked 9th at the end of qualifying and were drafted third.. 1018 pike robodevils also had a great bot , ending up ranked in the lower teens somewhere and getting drafted 6th... it was us vs. them in the first round of the finals and after we each won one and then two ties ... pike and thier alliance pulled it off by 10 pts in the 5th match!.. The bloomington teams had a great showing check back later for thier details...

Re: St Louis Regional Status
An exciting regional with a classic final round.
967 (Mean Machine) and 16 (Bomb Squad) proved that Cap + Hang > Hang + Hang Two extremely well constructed and consistent machines, great teamwork, and a well earned regional win. In qualifying, 650 was the top seed, 967 second, both teams undefeated. 931 (my team) was third. Our alliance was eliminated in the five-match quarterfinal that Michael Long described earlier. 1024 and 1331 were our alliance partners, and we could not have asked for two finer teams or robots. 547 took the regional Chairman's Award -- a real class act. 276 (Mad Cow) was in the house -- Dean stayed on the field for two of their matches to check out their weird walking action. 11 rookie teams at St. Louis this year. This was the third year for St. Louis regional and it has gotten better every year. |

967, 16 and who?
Who were runners up? |

Re: St Louis Regional Status
I'd like to thank our alliances: team 967 and 537 for awesome final matches at the St. Louis regional. 967: Your bot was incredibly reliable and I never doubted that you would be hanging at the end of the matches. 537: You guys were great at handling the 2x ball and getting it on the stationary goal quickly. Great job everyone! And, of course, to our superhuman players.
Also, great job to alliance #1. You guys were tough competitors and battled it out to the end. I was very impressed with your matches. The hanging bots got up to the bar quickly and without any trouble, and 1272 dominated the mobile goals. Is 1272 a rookie team? Unbelievable! Also congratulations to all the drivers out there today. I know this was team 967 drivers' senior year, way to go on an awesome last St. Louis regional. Good luck to all the St. Louis regional teams in their upcoming regionals...hope to see a lot of you at nationals!! |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Oh man it was completly nuts during our quarter-finals......
We (1098) were ranked 8th place after the qualifications, we ended up selecting 6th and invited 1018 and 535 to join our allience. The first semi-final round, we put 1018 and 535 out. 1018 did a great job collecting balls and getting it into the movable goal, and 535 was able to cap, and we won that round. Second game, it was 535 and 1098. Our automode got us close to team 931's bot, and 931, who had their arm up, purposely swung the arm around and pushed us over while I was trying to back it up, and we were out for "half" the match, I say half because 931 later accidently got hooked on our hook which was on the ground. And while 931 was going for 535 to try and block them from capping the goal, we started to winch ourselves in. So 931 was pretty much dragging us along. We ended up losing that match because the other team managed to hang. 1098 wasn't able to run in the 3rd match because our hook was bent, our string broke, our LED light shattered, and a couple wires were cut. While we frantically tried to fix all of that in the waiting area, 1018 and 535 went out against 931 and 1331. This is where it got nuts. The match went as normal and nothing big happend, but we ended up tying, 50-50 I think :ahh: So, we obviously decide to have a tiebreaker, once again we put out 1018 and 535 because we were still trying to fix things. Then the game went like normal. But we ended up TYING AGAIN, this time it was 30-30 :ahh: I seriously can't remeber much, so much was going on for me down on the floor (i am 1098's driver). But we ended up wining the tiebreaker for the tiebreaker for the tie, i think the score was 30-20. We ended up losing in 3 games as i recall for the semi-finals, but man, it was a great match. We ended up having to fix our robot 3 times down on the floor. But I am happy to say that our team (1098 in case u forgot) did win the sportsmanship award, we were actually suprised. But a great time at STL, and I can't wait for next year! |

On behalf of Team 535 (G-force) we'd like to thank you for picking us as your alliance. This match above was soo exciting. Somewhere in all that action was a DO OVER match too... I was coaching 535 but I can't remember too much either. I know I thought our poor bot was getting killed for running 5 matches in a row, but it survived ok. Team 1098 RULEZ!!!!! You guys are super nice! |

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Yea, flipping over occured twice in auto, but one time didn't affect us because of the problem with getting the drivers to go. But one other time, we were close to the bot and they ended up raising the arm and pushing us over, needless to say we weren't to happy. But it was still fun and TOO exciting, I think everyone in the arena during those matches was just like :ahh: and :yikes:
But great matches between 931, 1331, and 1024. And a cheer for our alliences 535 and 1018 for performing so well. |

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Team 967 thanks our alliances 537 and 16 for a job well done. BBS, that grab for the bar in the final game was clutch and was incredible. 537, the win in the second game of the round was absolutely vital. Thanks for helpin us out...........Congrats to all teams at stl regional, as we showed nelly the midwest swing...holla

Re: St Louis Regional Status
First I wanted to thank everyone for a GREAT time in St. Louis. Of course we were disappointed to lose but our Alliance Partners (1098 and 535) were fantastic to work with and it was amazing how 1098 got their robot working again after being damaged in the quarter finals. This competition was VERY physical... everyone needs to think about that and be prepared. Our quarter finals were very exciting with a restart and 2 ties our robot (1018) was on the field for 4 consecutive matches and performed admirably.
I do want to clarify something about the semi-final matches. This is where it became very physical... 1098 was again damaged and couldn't compete... and in the very final match after withstanding a pounding by Team 16 ...even our beloved Luci robot couldn't get the grippers to work because the contact had bent the rod on our pneumatic actuator. I guess this is a viable strategy as it wasn't flagged. We were on the verge of capping a small goal with 12 balls and couldn't open our grippers...so we didn't go on to the finals. I just am sending out a warning to all teams who use grippers and collect balls and perform these tasks.... the big hangers will just pound you into submission... you may not be able to do what you are designed to do because of the physical damage you may have done to you. It is not just pushing around... it is IN YOUR FACE, hammering and slamming with whatever they have to do it with... reminiscent of battle bots rather than the FIRST competition we all enjoy. My personal thoughts are that this is a dangerous trend... but it is within the rules and I cannot fault teams for using the strategy as long as it is legal. More power to them... All three of our alliance's robots were damaged in the semi at St. Louis. I am sure many others were too... Anyway, that's my two cents... It was a wonderful competition and we accomplished our goal of making it to the semi finals... Cleveland is our next step and we will bring raw materials and a new pneumatic cylinder to that event and armor our robot for what is sure to happen again... thanks again 1098 ... I cannot think of a better Alliance captain that we could have had, nor could I think of a better partner than G-Force. Best of luck in all you guys do!!! Re: St Louis Regional Status
I was absolutely THRILLED with this year's STL, and can't wait for next year.
On Thursday, the walk through the pits was a blast. Everyone was eager to see teams like 16, 93, 135, 269, 967, 1018, 1024, and MANY more compete that they had to make an announcement several times about clearing the walkways. As the teams were being queued for practice matches, everyone was buzzing with excitement with talk of other teams and robots. By the end of Thursday, I began losing my voice from talking with so many great teams. Friday brought the first qualifications, which were played very well. The teams were excited, the matches were played well, and all students seemed to be having a lot of fun. I lost my voice for good in the middle of the day, and after I got it back, I sounded very loud and very hoarse. Dean even stopped by for a surprise visit, and it seemed as though the day went very smoothly. Saturday was an entirely different story. I woke up in the morning unable to speak, and I had to work out arrangements with my team by whispering to a student. By the time I got to the regional, I got my voice back enough to talk a bit, but it still went out periodically. The qualifications had us all on the edge of our seats... very exciting and well played! Overall, I had a blast! The volunteers did a GREAT job, the students were friendly and gracious, and there was a very professional atmosphere. Many times, I witnessed teams shaking hands and chatting before matches or congratulating each other on a job well done. Between the kids from 535 picking on me, telling people how to pronounce 'Oconomowoc', becoming a great traffic controller with my pen, or even helping cheer teams on, I had a wonderful time and can't wait until next year! :) |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
One day people across the US will all know how to pronounce Oconomowoc, but until then we can all laugh at announcers that try.
STL was a fun time, despite some venue problems, we had a good showing and ended up beating ourselves more than anything in the end. We shall be ready for Midwest. Congrats to 16, 967, and 537 for winning and to everyone else for making it a blast, see some of you all in 2 weeks at the Midwest Regional! And good job to Amanda M. and all the volunteers for making it run as smooth as it did, even if we couldn't hear you :p |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Thanks to our alliance partners! 16 and 537 you guys were awsome! Great competition, alot of friendly people, and cool robots. Note to those that have not competed: YOU CAN'T WIN BY YOURSELF. Team work this year is huge. Good luck 16 in MA and good luck 537 in Chicago! To 650, 1272, and Hipphopanoumous (sorry I don't remember your #.) great job! That was the hardest matchup I have ever been in for the 3 years I have driven. Good luck at other regionals/championship!
Pictures will be sure to follow! 16 and 537, I will post our alliance photo that we took outside. Side note: I think teams have underestimated the amount of contact this year. Is it more than last year? No. But when teams skimp on protection to have a certain part or feature, expect to get banged up. |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
I went to SLR with a small group of students from my team to scout out the game for this year. We went to several different teams in the pit and recorded what they thought about different parts of this years competition. I was the one using the railerobotics rambo/hippie hair. We saw lots of interesting things, very cool pit 1024, awesome spirit nyack and 547, wear your safety glasses dean, lots of cool robot features, and several ideas to better prepare ourselves for Houston and Atlanta.
First, whoever mentioned them being strict about plugging things in, we got yelled at for charging our camera out of one of the arena outlets. The arena people also caught us for setting on the tops of the chairs during the finals. As for finals, we weren't just on the edge of the seat, we were sitting on the tops of the chairs. They were more exciting this year by far. I can't wait for nationals. 5 matches were unbelievable. You felt bad to have a winner. I did see how important hanging and a good HP, 1024's was awesome. And saw some great robots despite all outcomes, 93's was amazing and fun to watch. The Judges were great. Especially the two that helped the MC. The audience was excited between matches and I still can't get ja own it (sp?) out of my head. And the volunteers made it awesome. One of the volunteers took the time to explain the safety captain to our camera. And best of all is the St. Louis Blues Towelman. Who is that guy and how does he have that much energy? He was insane but fun too. |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Yes, I couldn't believe they actually brought in the towelman. He is a staple at the St. Louis Blues hockey games. For those who don't know who he is, at every Blues game, at some random time during the game he will come running down from the very top level of the Savvis Center waving his towels around. Then he will get the crowd to chant "1....2....3....GO BLUES" and then toss a couple towels. Everyone in St. Louis loves him, and when he came out I was just like :yikes:

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Hey all!
I just wanted to thank (again, Ashley already beat me to it) our awesome alliance of team 967 and 537 (967, thanks for picking us, 537, thanks for joining!). Those finals certainly were edge of your seat. I already had lost my voice from yelling throughout the day, but we did our best to keep the volume up. I see that the physical-ness (if that's a word) of this year's game has been brought up. I did notice how heavy it was getting there at times. I can remember several times when we'd be getting up onto the platform that we'd be bumped (for example, some of the hanging bots would actually swing back and forth a little after winching up there) and knock us backwards. I know we were mentioned in an earlier thread as having banged someone up, and I just wanted to assure them that any damage done was entirely accidental. I'm sure that none of the teams at the competition would intentionally damage another robot. I don't think that the competition is any more physical than last year though, the whole "knock into the totes a half a second before the other robot hits exactly opposite to you" was pretty rough too. Anyway, to all the teams at Saint Louis- Awesome game guys! To those attending the competition in Annapolis coming up in a few days- We're looking forward to getting to see everybody! Later, Matt McNelley |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
On behalf of everyone on Team 935, RaileRobotics (we were the team that was handing out the yellow bandanas), we would like to congratulate each and every team on doing so well at St. Louis. There were many, many, very good robots there and the amount of gracious professionalism was unbelievable. Another thank you needs to go out to all of the volunteers, judges, and FIRST representatives.
I especially liked being in the presence of so many great teams, such as 16, 343, 158, 1024, 650, and the list goes on. If anyone needs scouting information about teams at St. Louis, send me an email, and I'll see what I can do. I think that is all I have to say, wait, one last thing, good luck to each and every team this year, and Hella, you guys rock! I don't know if any one from Hella's Angels visits here, but if you do, we were the team that was down on the floor with you guys after we lost, cheering you on! GO TEAMS! |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
A complete list of award winners is available at the following website: http://www.stlouisfirst.org/FRC2004awards.htm
Also, does anyone have contact information for Team 1315 CHESS? I spoke with them and gave them incorrect information and I would like to correct this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryan Miller |

Here is us against Hella's in the first match of quarterfinals. This is our first year and we got the Highest Seeded Rookie award. We were 16th at the end of qualifying rounds with a 4 and 2 record. Congrats BBS, Mean Machine, and Charger Robotics for a great regional, we will see you all next year.

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Hey 931 you guys rocked! I had to take off my hard hat just so you guys wouldn't hold me up from goin to the bathroom! Will load lots of pics in a bit, you may have saw him but one of our mentors is a registered news photo guy and was on the field the whole time. BBS and 537 I saw our group photo and it is REALLY cool hopefully I can scan it here soon. I slept in class today cause I was still tired! (Don't worry, didn't miss much, our school is in state for b-ball and the teachers aren't really teaching anything important since 75% of the school will be gone.)

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Extending Seth's thank you, all the teams at stl rocked........there was no doubt that the arena was rockin with all the fans jumping up and down for ALL teams. For teams going elsewhere this year, show that spirit once again to make every place as exciting as STL.
"air ric"......oh and thank you seth for findin my lucky red headband |
Re: St Louis Regional Status
Team 537 would like to thank Teams 16 and 967 for picking us in your alliance. The final matches were incredibly intense and exciting and we were glad to assist our alliance in anyway possilbe. Your robots did an excellent job and we wish you the best of luck in the future, and can't wait to meet again at Nationals. This year Team 537 was not elligable to attend Nationals unless we won chairmans or another award. This was also our first year attending the St. Louis Regionals, as we usually only attend the Midwest Regionals. (Be prepared for our colorful scarves and capes in Evanston, along with some student designed coloring books, crayons, and tattoos) This was just the boost we needed, and our entire school has built up an excitement about robotics, as this is the farthest we've ever gone during the finals. Now it is just a matter of raising enough money to send our entire team to Atlanta. Thanks again! Hopefully we can keep in contact and I look forward to seeing the picture of our winning alliance!

What kind of standings are you wanting? I have a lot of the information, and can post more than the top 15 teams. Basically, I can give you any information about things before finals that you need, but I need to know what you want. Also, I too want to extend my thanks to all the teams at St. Louis on behalf of my team and its members. Thanks again, Ryan Miller |

Re: St Louis Regional Status
Team 1094 would like to thank team 171 for choosing us for their partners in the finals. We had a pretty bad record in the qualifications and really had no hope of making it to the finals. It made the experience for our small 2nd year team as exciting as it could be. Our other partner, team 93, had a super robot that performed very well. You could tell from the actions of the crew that many hours of dedicated work went into that machine. Our team would especially like to thank both our alliance partners for their good sportsmanship when we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in an excellently planned match. You could see the disappointment on their faces but still they were pleasant to us. I hope we can be a better partner for 171 and 93 somtime in the future.
