Strange FIRST Facts

Looking at the past Chairman's award winners I see no team numbered over two hundred has ever won the national award.
Any other unusual FIRST facts you guys can come up with?

Re: Strange FIRST Facts

Is it so strange to see no teams with a number over two hundred win the National Chairman's Award? I'm not saying it can't be done it's just that the judges will lean towards a team that has several years under their belt because they've done more things with all that time. What I'm trying to say is that a team that's had 5 years to work on beefing up their Chairman's Award resusme will probably have more examples as to why they deserve the award instead of a rookie or 2-3 year team who is still trying to get a feel for all that FIRST is. It'd be great to see a team with a high team number win to show that new teams can instantaneously transform their high school, town, county, etc. The odds are against them but a dedicated team can take the task head on and win the Chairman's Award. As the years progress I'm sure we'll see several teams over the 200 mark. It's only a matter of time. :)

I like the fact that in 2002 was it, that the last team to sign up was 999 (from Cheshire CT!!! YAY).

That is a creepy coincidence, now we can compare the exact time that it took the first thousand teams and the next thousand teams to sign up. We're already at the 1400 mark this year. I don't think it will take that long to see 2000 teams!!!

It's been 12 years. You would think at least a team in the 3,4 or 5 hundreds that have been around for years would have won. I just think it's a quirky coincidnence than preferring long standing teams (remeber, 250 is an original team).

Regional or national chairman's awards. Im leaning towards national though because 564 won a regional award.

If im right the highest numbered team to win a Regional Chairman's Award was us last year and we are 957...this year if im right 2 teams in the 800s have won Chairman's Awards.. What is the quickest a team has ever won the Chairman's Award?(In Years... both National And Regional)

Nate

Well, the X-Cats won the very first Chairman's award, which technically makes them the only rookie to ever win the Chairman's award (though the teams back in '92 were pioneers, not rookies). There were no regoinal Chairman's awards til last year I believe.

That's not really what happened, however.

In 2002, the OI could not display anything more than a three-digit number. Team registration began by assigning team numbers at 800. When registration hit 999, FIRST had to go back and begin filling in empty numbers. Teams registered from 717 through 800 actually registered after team 999.

I think it's interesting that as far as I can tell there's no team 1337 or 666.

I am pretty sure there is (UCONNNN WINSSSSSS!!!!) good reason why there is no 666, I remember one catholic church's phone number had 666 as the last three digits (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WHAT FOUL!!!!) and they sued the phone company and had their phone number changed.

P.S. sorry, but I am watching the UCONN PITTS game and they WIN IT!!! FROM BEHIND :yikes:

there are also slightly differentent variations of 1337, like the type you find in CS will be a bit different from say War3.

Yes. 19, 45, 126, 190, 191, 250.

And more. Lots more.

Re: Strange FIRST Facts

I doubt it's much of a coincidence that all the teams that have won the Chairman's Award are older teams. My view is that FIRST thinks there are many worthy of the Chairman's Award and the older teams are going to be the ones that are going to receive the honor first as they've waited longer. Frankly, I'm just happy that we aren't seeing the same Chairman's Awards Finalists year after year as seemed to be happening a few years ago.

Actually according to the FIRST database there are 1014. 935 of those are from the USA.

Has anyone else noticed the several of the schools that hosted FIRST Regionals are in the NCAA Basketball Tournament? Ex. VCU, UCF, etc.

That page you linked is the database from all teams that competed in the 2003 and/or the 2004 competitions combined. If you look HERE (FIRST 2004 Database) you will see only 930 teams are competing this year.

There has yet to be a year where over 999 teams total competed, look for it in our near future.

Oops.. It seems the interactive map on the FIRST site, still references 2003, not 2004. I just assumed that their query was correct...
