Ahh! Prom!
Ok...Is anyone else freaking because it's two months before prom and you STILL don't have a date? I mean...I was worried at first that Nationals would be during prom (Thankfully they weren't) but now I'm freaking because I don't have a date. It's horrible but my school has a requirement that doesn't allow anyone to go stag. That usually wouldn't be a problem HOWEVER my best friend is dating my cousin so she has a date (she was the last one of us *myself excluded* who was still dateless) so now I'm high and dry! Any ideas as how to get a prom date? I've already asked two guys who polietely said no. One because of conflicting prom dates (he goes to another school and his prom is the same time and he already said he'd go with a friend of his) and the other because...well...I'm not sure! LOL! A few friends have jokingly said I should just go to the next competition with a sign around my neck that says "Live in Delaware? Want to go to a prom? Good! Let's go!" That's a little desperate but at this point...hey...anything is better then nothing, right? LOL. Any ideas guys? Any pick up lines I should try?

Re: Ahh! Prom!
Just to let you know, it will be ok.
I didn't have a date to prom until yesterday and my prom is on the 27th of this month. I didn't really worry about a prom date. I was myself with my guy friends and turns out one ended up asking me (even if it was at last minute) Dont stress. Good things come in time :p |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
I don't see what the big deal about prom is... That and I've only ever been to one dance in my entire life. I'm just curious. What sets prom apart from the regular dances sponsored by the schools?
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
I'm not sure if I see the big deal about Junior Prom but I know as a Senior, prom is a big deal because it is the last and final dance that you'll be able to have with your friends. It's special because you make it special.
It's like anything...you only get out of it what you put into it. My friends and I put alot into our prom because this is the last and final time that we're going to be able to get together as a whole with our class and have fun. You always say that you'll stay friends and you'll stay in contact but the reality of the fact is...you know you wont. I went to public school for eight years of my life. Then I transferred to public school. When I left public school I swore I'd stay friends with all my friends. That I wouldn't let our friendship die. I hate to say this but...my friendships last two months into my new school year until we just...grew apart. That's what life is like. You grow apart and that's ok. Enjoy the time you have. That's why Prom is so important. It's the last and final. |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Oh my gosh! I'm totally in the same situation! I was kinda planning on asking the guy I just broke things off with to go just as friends but he just started dating another girl on the team, whom I'm sure he'll go with. I totally don't want to go alone. Come on guys, any suggestions for some hot, dateless ladies? :D

Re: Ahh! Prom!
go there and hang out with your true friends.. to me thats the best way to have a fun time.... i've heard many stories that goes with that, the say the ditched their date and hung out with friends and had a much better time then they thought they would have had with thier date.
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Oh! I seriously plan to go and hang out with my friends. That's not the thing. The thing is that my school REQUIRES you have a date. That means you can't go stag. Now, what some people do to get around the whole "you have to have a date" rule is they bring a friend. Like...a bunch of girls will work it out so that two girls go with each other and that way you eliminate having to have a guy with.
However, the last of my single friends just got a boyfriend and she is taking him to prom so...I'm S.O.L. unless I either A. Don't go or B. Find a date. Seeing as how this is prom and all...I'm going. Even if I have to buy a date (LOL! I wonder if that'd work!) |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
First of all I just want to wish you the best of luck in your search. I wasn't able to attend my Junior Prom due to driver duties at Nationals in 2002. I was fortunate enough to accompany my driving partner to his prom that year, however, I will never truely know the time that I missed with my friends at my prom.
Just to toss out some suggestions. Quite possibly it may not be a friend, but scoure your school through every single person to try to find an individual to "split a ticket" with you. Quite possibly you may even make a new friend in the process. Maybe you have a cousin female or male that would be close or distant that would go to accompany you or just go to have a good time on his or her own. Scrounge through all of your teammates, try to get one of them to go as friends. Best of luck, and don't give up hope. :) |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
I remember my Senior Prom.. ah, good times.
I wore a Miami Vice like Royal Blue Tuxedo Jacket, (Not that baby blue 70's-ish with frilly blue. Royal Blue Baby!!) I wish I was able to keep that Jacket, it was so cool.. It went very nicely with my Royal Blue Boots.. The girl I went with was one of my good friends at the time. We just went together and had a great time. Ah, High School... I remember it vaguely!! lol |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Wow.... so you can't go to prom... Too bad! You miss out on the chance to spend lots of money, dress very uncomfortably, and fail miserably at dancing. If you want to just spend time with your friends, just go to the city, no need to spend all that money to get dressed up, just to hang out with your friends. Save that money for college. It can buy you a couple months of food (depending on how thrifty you are).
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Oh wow...ouch. Ok...my friends are going and I want to too. Besides...it's the last dance with the entire school.

Separation of Church and State. My school is a private school. In general, they can get away with doing certain things that public schools can not because they are a private school. To be honest, I doubt anyone has ever tried to fight it anyway.

Of course, I don't expect you to, y'know, take your school to court. I'm just saying, "be aware." |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Yeah, but I'm not exactly a "people person"... But if I wanted to go by myself, I could. We don't have that "you have to have a date" rule. I might go, but as far as I can tell, none of the people that I really know are going to prom. We fit into the "misfit" catagory. And we are quite proud of this fact. :D

Re: Ahh! Prom!
yeah i feel kind of bad for you but I like the idea of going to your next regional with the sign around your neck. im sure some one would agree .... lol ..
as to going to prom just to hang out with friends, get dressed up, spend a lot of money, etc. i think its worth it. that being said, i havent been to my prom yet, and when i do, i will be getting dressed up but will most probably not be with most of my friends because they are all going to prom this year and I wont be because it is my older brother's prom too and he doesnt want me there, which i can respect (my friends are in his/my grade - it has to do with my screwed up grades where it is hard for me to explain what grade im in anymore ... ) , and because my boyfriend doesnt live near me (an almost 23 hour drive away according to yahoo maps) he probably wont be there, but like i said i will be going and i will have fun and i will be with some of my not-so-close friends .... but then again, half of the fun in prom is going shopping for the dress, doing your hair and makeup in a rush so youre not late, worrying over every detail, and the after-party ... |

This is a PRIVATE school. By their very nature, they have chosen to associate with some people and not with others. They are allowed to discriminate if they choose and set their own policy on who attends their events and under what circumstances. Notice I have been careful not to include any particular group they might be discriminating against, because it doesn't matter. For example, a school for left handed red-heads would be perfectly legal and they would be perfectly justifed in excluding brunettes, blondes and right handers from any or all events if they so chose. They would also be permitted to dictate that you could only attend their events in groups of five if they wished. Though as has been mentioned elsewhere, they should not use Federal or possibly State monies (depending on where you live) to fund such activity. (Why should the Government be involved in a private association anyway?) In recent years, certain activist groups have decided they have a right to poke their nose wherever they want in the interest of being "accepted". That doesn't mean it is right, or that they have a "right" to do so. Nor do we have to accept their propaganda that this is so. Just setting the record straight, ChrisH Brm789, I can see this means a lot to you. I'm sure there are several young men around here who are eligible, near enough, and gentleman enough to help you out here. I hope at least one of them will. |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
To be honest, I find that prom is hyped-up too much. It's not as big as everyone makes it out to be but the thing is...it's something you only really get to experience once (speaking...of course...about Sr. Prom which is completly different then Jr. Prom.). Chris, yes...it is important to me which is something I hate to admit. I'm usually the last person to follow the crowd but in this case...I am. I do hope you are right in that there are good decent guys out there who will help me out because otherwise...I'm buying an escort or something. I dunno...maybe I'll just buy the second ticket and show up stag claiming my date "got sick" and couldn't make it. Either way, I'm going. Heh. I'll have fun and that's it.

Re: Ahh! Prom!
ask Coco to take you! lol hey, it's worth a shot :D
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
May I ask a question...why is it almost everyone I know has said that? Like...Breanne...I don't even know how you know Coco nor do I know you but you just said to ask him and then when I was saying something about it at my team meeting, another student piped in and said "Take Coco!" I am aware Coco is one of the sweetest guys and most noble on my team but...is there another reason? And the reason I havn't asked Coco is I barelly know Coco and not to mention...he's on my team. It'd be awkward just in general since I want nothing started with my team mates and rumors spread faster then a forest fire in our team.
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Coco's my best friend. Yeh he is the sweetest! But i say ask him, because i don't see a reason why he would say no. And on the rhumor thing, just make it clear that you're going as friends because you didn't have a date. You can also use this opportunity to get to know him better. lol. just tell him that Bree said he should take you ;)

However, even if they did, I think you would have a hard time arguing that they were discriminating based on marital status. Take 3 sets of hypothetical people. One is a male-female couple, unmaried. The second is a male-male couple. The third is a lone female. All 5 people have the same marital status: single. sorry to bring this up so late. I saw it when it was posted, but haven't had a chance to gather my thoughts until now. |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Joe,
This is the tricky thing about private schools. While all three should be considered, only two of the three would be acceptable at my school and only one of them at my dance. The school is a private CATHOLIC school and because of such, they can deny things that a public school can not. As far as I am aware of...a girl in Delaware Public school who becomes pregnant may contunie to attend school until it is no longer healthy for her or the baby. I have known of a few girls who carried full term in Delaware Public Schools. My school...has another opinion. A girl who is pregnant may contunie to attend classes until she shows. There have been a few exceptitions to this rule in both cases...and it can get ugly. The Prom is one of those things were the school has and is the final and last say. While I could push the issue and demand to be allowed to attend based on my legal rights, it would be more trouble then it is worth. My friends would think I was rather odd and it would just prove how dateless I am truly am. This rule isn't really that bad except when you get into a situtition like I am in where you can't find a date. Oh yes...my school has stated that same sex relationships are highly frowned up by the school and the church. I have never heard of them removing someone from the school from being homosexual however...it wouldn't surprise me. This is one of the downsides of attending a private school. You have to listen to ridiculious rules. |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Gees... I am glad I dont have to worry about any of this... luckily BeanTown Blitz is on the same day as my junior prom so now I got an excuse out of going to it and dont have to worry about any such thing as Tuxes or dates or rides or anything of the sort :D

Re: Ahh! Prom!
Erin, mi amiga and my namesake, I've found the answer to your problem. They say you have to bring a guy? Why not just buy one of those inflatable guys, like they have at Spencers? Having gone to all-girl school for 5 years (need... escape... now....), I've seen countless answers to the old 'I don't have a date' quandry. One person even brought her dog! It was male. It works. When in crisis, always observe the loophole, every school has one. :p

Re: Ahh! Prom!
I'm not too worried about going to prom, since I didn't have a date anyways :)
|
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Best bet.....find a guy on your team or one near you, and ask him. Get to know im a little bit first, and then see if he'll go with you. When is your prom? I (unforunatly) cannot go to mine, because it conflicts with my internship @ the bermuda zoo (w00t w00t for school trips to tropical islands) but i AM going to my friend's prom who lives on the other side of the state. (it's kinda cool when your parents' best friend's son joins robotics, cuz u've known him your WHOLE life, and o yea then u become better friends and then go to prom with him!! yahh pat!!)
I've gone to prom every year i've been in FIRST (aka 3 years, i'm a junior) with a guy who's in FIRST too (this year i AM expanding outside my team though, lol) I hope you get a date though, maybe one of you're friend's boyfriend's friends? good luck |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
I've been thinking about prom myself. I've never been much of a dancer but it's more that there's no one I want to be there with. The only person I have in mind might freak if I ask so... woe is meee... WOE IS MEE!!!!!!
Ahh I'll get over it... |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
My junior year, one of our teammates had a g/f who lived in Oregon (this takes place in CT, by the way), and she couldn't make it. So, I had read something in one of those prom-ish magazines about a guy in the same spot who brought his video camera to the prom, took pictures with it, bought it a corsage...so that his date was there in some form :)
So my friend ended up bringing a female friend, but taking the video camera as his date. And yes, he took pictures with both. :D The next robot season, one of our teammates couldnt make it to Nationals, so we brought along a camera and named it "Virtual Bob". |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Hey! Although personally I don't start thinking about prom until like...umm the week before, why dont you just take a friend? i mean, i girl? unless you go to a catholic school, i think that would be fine...she wouldnt (obviously) be your "date" but atleast you'd get to go and then you can still hang out with your friends. Don't know if you're that desperate or not, but its a thought! And if you don't want to do that, I will reiterate what some of the others said, just pick a guy! I have met a lot of really great people by just going up and chatting with them...its suprising to find out how much you have in common with someone you figured was an exact opposite. Its a lot of fun meeting someone new...if you take a friend, you may get tired of each other too quickly, but with someone new, you can't go wrong! there's so much to talk about. Hope you have fun! And don't worry, it will all work out...if nothing else....you can crash it.

haha that is too cute. |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
dont worry about asking a guy. i am going with a female friend of mine (im a guy) as a friend. i didnt feel like going to prom with anyone in any traditional sense of the word, but i went around to my female friends and started whoring myself out, seeing if anyone needed someone. i offered to a girl in my school named jess (shes one of those crazy cool people you feel proud to know) and she needed someone, so, hence, i am going to prom....
dont forget your friends, might not be romantic, but who knows, anyways as a vertran of at least one senior prom, i can say it can be a great night, even with a friend.... |
Re: Ahh! Prom!
Ugh. Proms are evil. I went to an all girl school and I was very, very shy. I skipped my junior prom, and almost skipped my senior prom because there was no way I was going to ask someone, not me. While talking about it at work one night, one of the waiters offered to be my date. As a matter of fact, he was super excited about it, and couldn't wait to rent a tux. I was happy. My parents weren't because he was 30 years old and undeniably gay. The same night he invited himself, a friend of mine who knew her brother had a crush on me asked him to go with me (she did not tell me she was doing this) and he said yes. I didn't want to go with him, he was boring, he had absolutely no passion for anything, he was fussy, he was petrified of dogs and hated cats because they licked themselves in public. But I said yes to him because my parents were having conniptions over the gay man. I should have stood up to my parents; my prom would have been a lot more memorable and fun if I had.
Last year one of the students on our team asked me to the prom. He just thought it would be the coolest thing if I went. However, his prom was the same day I had scheduled to go skydiving so I told him as nicely as I could, that I would rather throw myself from a plane than go to prom with him. He wasn't too broken up about it; he turned right around and asked Dave Lavery to go with him. Heidi <==========> |
