Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
Hey,
We started the first week of regionals with the most exciting regionals with 3 on the east cost and 1 on the west coast &for week #4's competitions there will be 2 on the east coast and at most 3 in the middle of the US which are also another set of exciting regionals. With this in mind I give you the NYC FIRST! Regional. Where NY Teams and other teams from different states get to settle their differences on the field. This thread will provide continous updates of the NYC Regional and its Team Social following the completion of the NYC Regional. Awards won by Teams will be posted here as well and possible Match Results. Match results will only be taken if I can gather enough of people (possibly about 5 and everyone could have [x] amount of matches so no dublicate scores are posted. If you would like to participate in Match Score keeping with me just PM me. Match Results will be posted in this thread so that the Teams who did not go can see how the NYC FIRST! Competition went. Awards won by Teams does not require many people so 2 at most will be needed. Possibly I will do it and will need 1 other person. And we cannot forget about RICH WONGS The Good The Bad The Ugly and the SO SO. This pertains to Competition Location, Seating, Pit Space, Car Parking, Food, etc.... Any comments about any of those above listed can also be posted here that way we keep everything in one thread. When you reply to this thread. In the Title Bar (if its editable) use 1 of the following this way teams looking here know what your talking about ! A: The Good The Bad and The Ugly B: Match Results / Awards C: Team Social D: Competition Comments Ok! Thats it for now Hope to see this thread active by next thursday when the NYC FIRST! Regional unpacks its competitors. Till then you have this weeks regionals to watch. I hope you all have fun. Good Luck and can't wait to see you guys at the NYC FIRST! Regionals For any of the Teams that need help next thursday with their robots I will be walking around the pits lending a hand in getting your robot unpacked and rolling. |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
I have been told that there will be a Jazz Jam after Friday's Award Ceremony. I know there are a few students from our team that plays in a local Jazz Band, and may want to join in. In fact they could be the only people playing, and I have no idea about it. Regardless, I am just wondering who else will be performing (a special appearance?) at this Team Social, and if there is anything else to expect (perhaps food?).

Yes, the Jazz Jam is still on. We're still working on the special guest and food options. :) |

Hey all,
I wonder who the special guest could be??*ponders* Ok I did some work on this little score keeper thingy and I have come up with this near simple design in MS Word see attachment!!!!!!!!! You like. When the matches change to the Elimitaion Rounds it will continue to have this format. and "Match#1 would be like Semi Final Match 1.1" Its simple easy to use and all you'll need is a pen. Anyone willing to help let me know so I know how many copies to print up. This will help FIRST in getting the results out to teams for at least this regional. |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
Is this the referee's score tabulating sheet? If so, it looks good, although that would be an aweful lot of red and blue ink you would use up. Maybe if you color the borders of each box to their respective alliance, that may save you up on ink.

SCHEDULE CORRECTION!
VERY IMPORTANT - NYC FIRST - Schedule Correction
We just noticed an error in the Public Agenda for the 2004 New York City FIRST Robotics Competition that is posted on the FIRST website -- Please note that on Thursday, March 25, the pits will open at 8:30am. The designated three team members who will be entering early to uncrate may enter the pit area starting at 7:45am. We hope that this error does not cause your team difficulty. We apologize for the mistake. We hope everyone has a great time and successful competiton. You are greatest. We really appreciate all that you do to make it possible for your students to be part of the FIRST celebration. See you next week. Randy Randy Schaeffer, Co-director |

To finalize this post I might use the idea in just having the borders colored rather then the interior of the box. i have at least another week to get it right plus its just a small side project so it won't take long. edit:// SEE ATTACHMENT!!! In This post A Copy of the Score / Ranking / Award Sheet will be uploaded to the White Papers for teams to use at the remaining regionals sometime tonite Instructions on the Score / Ranking / Award Sheet Notes**** This sheet may be used for personal team records or you may use this as a full record of the status of the regional. This file came to be since FIRST has been a lil slow with getting things running as far as regional updates is concerned. To Print this file in MS WORD Click File > Print In the Pages box type in 16,1 2,15 14,3 4,13 12,5 6,11 10,7 8,9 Scroll to the Pages per sheet and select 2 pages then scroll to the Scale to paper size and select Letter. Do this for all the sets of pages to achieve Book Format Each page set of pages must be printed seperately for Book View (e.g. Print 16,1 after that place the sheet corresponding to printer setup so that 2,15 may be printed on the reverse side correctly. Do this for each set all together you should have 4 pages. You may change the NYC FIRST! Regional @ ..... to a the Regional you are attending. If you run out of the Match # boxes you may copy and paste from where the row Match# starts to where the last row ends (before the next Match# row begins.) If you run out of Rankings row just copy and past the row before and edit as necessary. This book may also be printed normally. Ok! One other comment. I know that many teams out there have alot of Team Spirit, and while attending the NYC Regionals I want to see that team spirit let loose. Maybe when the YMCA or Cha Cha Slide / Electric Slide or any other party dance song gets played we can put together a small group size of members consisting maybe 2 team members from each team to do the party dance moves to that song. It's only a suggestion and need not to be done if you don't want to. After these last few gloomy days of Snow / Rain maybe we can bring a strong ray of sunshine and excitment to the field and competition. |

NYC FIRST Social for Friday Evening starting 6pm: 1. Comedian/ MC 2. Team Cheerleading/Step Teams 3. Jazz Jam :) Another update today (3/22/04) Food will be allowed in the stands! The Regional Directors are paying extra to clean-up, so now teams can buy food from outside and eat in the stands. But PLEASE, help us keep the place clean; use the garbage cans. A menu of food places around the neighborhood will be available at the PIT Admin Table. Come by and ask for it! :) |

Edit:// too lazy to post or reply so I'll edit instead. To post#14. Your more then welcome to come I'm just upset your team wasn't able to get in. A side subject: Is any of the Teams out there finding the FRC Team Roster for 2004 in both HTML / MS WORD format useful. I would like some feed back this way I know in advance whether or not it should be updated for next year! Changes I know of A) I will be sticking to using HTML since it takes up less space then MS WORD B) Content on it Shall be Limiting it to School Name and not School Name and Sponsor since this is the bulk of the text when it comes down to teams with like 25 sponsors. It will continue to have the web page links in a sepereate column. Team Numbers will of course be kept there. C) The look of it will change. colors will be appropriately chosen so that Color ink isn't wasted. |

Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
Yes So Team 522 did win an award Awesome they deserve it. I was busy helping 334 with their drive train issues and was unable to make the award ceremony. And soon after that was on a bus to go home b/c of traffic related issues. Oh well maybe next year :-( *cries*. On a happier note I have pictures from both Day 1 and Day 2 BUT you probably won't see them up till Mid-Afternoon Day3. If your nice maybe Brandon will approve the zipped files quicker if asked.
Edit:// NOTE** I AM HAVING EXTREME DIFFICULTY IN UPLOADING THE REGIONAL PICS. I CONTINUE TO GET AN ERROR THAT IS IN THE PHP PROGRAM AND REQUIRES BRANDONS PRESENCE . SO UNTIL HE RETURNS FROM CHICAGO (HES OUT WATCHING A REGIONAL) I'LL SEE IF HE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT IT. UNTIL THE PHP ERROR IS FIXED I HAVE DECIDED TO PLACE THE PICTURES ON MY SITE. YOU MAY DOWNLOAD THEM FROM THERE OR WAIT TILL THE WHITE PAPERS SECTION IS LOOKED AT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE! PICTURES MAY COME OUT BLURRY OR DISCOLORED. I TRIED DELETING AS MANY AS I COULD !!!!!!!!!!! Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
Ok This will be an extremely long post so just bare with me please.
Starting with the good the bad and the ugly: I'm deeply upset that our 3 yr pit lady has announced her leaving the FIRST community. I talked one on one with her and she had said that she was leaving FIRST and that was why the new pit announcer was being trained. Friday was the first time she had left the it Area and watched a few full rounds of nothing but Robot beating and banging. Now on to Volunteer Stats. Thursdays volunteer staff was undermanned. Friday and Saturday was a big improvement on staff. Field and seating setup I was a bit unhappy about considering that the judges tables were in front of the main seating for teams. This arrangement made it EXTREMELY difficult for me to take good picture and for those with camcorders to get a good video shot expicially when the Flow Control made its rounds 10 times per minute noting that we should kneel on our knees so that people in the stands. I am deeply hoping that maybe next years field setup should have the judges sit by the field control area so that people both on the floor and in the stands may watch the matches w/o interruption. I liked the fact that we were able to bring food to the pits and thank the regional coordinators for making this arrangement. As for the field and food issue I won't lie I did sneek cans of soda in but always cleaned up after myself. I am hoping that maybe in the distant future something will eventually work it self out like the other Pro Sports Games. Pits were roomy but felt small if your team had a lot of stuff and the team next to u had less stuff but eh! no problems whatsoever. Now Onto the important stuff :-) A Very big congrads. To the Regional Finalist 1 Time NYC FIRST! Regional Alliance Captain Team 233. You guys had an excellent and reliable robot espicially the seriousness in hanging. Remember Think Pink! 2 Time NYC FIRST! Regional in consecutive years (2003 - 2004) Team 522. You guys had an unbreakable beast and I wish you much luck and success in Atlanta. She Hangs She Hangs Oh Baby She Moves She Moves I Go Crazy She Hangs like a Monkey and her name is Libby She's built Like a Tank and she fights for McKee. 1 Time NYC FIRST! Regional Team 759. You guys were awesome in not only Blocking but in herding of the balls. The speed of your robot was simply awesome. espicially during auton when you guys went from one end to the other in under like 2 secs. UK ALL THE WAY! And a personal thank you to Team 334. Thank You for allowing me to work on your robot I almost felt like I belonged there but eh! we'll see what the near future holds ;-) I share your pain in not seeing your robot as competitive as it should have been. I hope that you can fix the drive train during nationals so that you may be competitive. Once agin Congrads for the Award you recieved you deserved it and I'm sorry I couldn't do more. Congradulations to all 33 Teams in which have registered for this event you all were awesome. Who would have guessed that all 4 Staten Island Teams would get to play the remaining matches of the Competition. That was so cool and next year I hope to see some more Staten Island Teams Head to Head Competing. Congradulations to all the Award Recievers you earned it. Mark our Head Referee. Though it didn't look like you did much these last 3 days you did make sure that teams were warned of penalties and trained fellow referees to watch for them. Excellent job and you deserve every ounce of that award. Be afraid I might want that nice award next year so watch for where I volunteer in lol :-) Now Onto Pictures. I didn't take as many pictures as Day 2 but I do have some and will be available at http://firstprojects.tripod.com around Sunday Night around 11PM EST. Kinda having issues with my camera and network. Edit:// DUE TO THE LACK OF BEING BY THE FIELD I WAS ONLY ABLE TO GET A FEW PICTURES OF T.759. THE PICS I HAVE WILL GET UPLOADED TO CD PROBABLY ON TUESDAY |

BTW- NYC Regional challenges all the other Regionals to a 2004 photo gallery contest! The most pics posted will be the winner. Simple rule: all pics must be from that regional! (Nats don't count) |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
I have a few pics from NYC that I can post when I get a chance. I did actually have a chance to take pics between field reset duties!!
|
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
The Good - The competition site was located at a very nice arena, and the competition ran pretty smoothly. The volunteers did an excellent job resetting the field. There was a lot of cheering and enthusiasm. I was extremely surprised and excited to see Woody Flowers attending this regional. After all, I consider Woody Flowers to have god-like status, especially at a FIRST event. So yes, Woody Flowers is a god.
The Bad - Sometimes the field would mysteriously drop balls without warning, even when a match has not started. Rumor has it that another team was chanting to our team, "Go back to where ever you came from, or we will shoot you." I was not there to witness this, but they were also the same team that pegged some of us with the candy we passed out towards the end of the regional. and The Ugly - On Friday morning, some of the organizers of the event did not have match lists printed out, and announced numerous times that they will let everybody in the pit know when the match lists are ready to be given out. Frustrated, "Granny" (Sorry, I do not know her name) the pit announcer yelled, "We will let you guys know when the match lists are ready, do not ask for them again!" A sarcastic member from another team tested her patience by jumping up and down while yelling back at her, "When will the match lists be ready?" She angrily picked up the microphone and screamed, "H377 NO!" (Note: written in l33t for censorship) The pit erupted with laughter and applause. Too bad it was her last year as a pit announcer for the New York City Regional. |

Edit:// Pictures Are now up on my site http://firstprojects.tripod.com Just click on the corresponding Day and it will prompt you to download it. All files have been Zipped. Day1 = 1.27 MB Day2 = 3.67 MB Day3 = 5.43 MB Now I know these files are huge for the average 56 K User so If you would like I can email you the pictures to your email address. In Sections however This is open to 56 K users. The people with DSL / Cable or any other High speed internet should be able to D/L all this with in a matter of 5 - 10 Minutes So if you have 56K and would like to get the pictures in sections let me know. Also I can send individual pictures to you, you just have to email me and / post here / PM / IM me and let me know which ones you want to see. Till I can figure out an easier way to do this. This will be the going method temporarily. So far everyone can upload white papers yet I cannot upload Zip files on CD till I get that worked out with Brandon you will have to go to my site. I would do individual pictures but its like 300 somewhat pictures and 1/2 to 3/4 of them are competition |

Hey, did anybody get a copy of that song the judges were singing on Saturday (I think) during the opening ceremonies? It would be nice to get the lyrics. :)

Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
Is it me or was the slide of the lyrics going at a different pace?

I remember in 2002 the judges sang "If I only had a robot" and it was referenced to Team 522 's Dorothy. Every year the judges come up with a great sounding tune to kickoff the final day of competition
Yeah so any way Rich get the 2004 song so I can email it to the peeps over at 522 headquarters for them to post on the wall. |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
FIRST JUDGES SONG!
Saturday, March 27, 2004 New York City (To the melody of “Would you like to swing on a star?”) Would you like to swing on a bar? Or throw five-point balls from afar? Does your robot drive like a car? Then you’re a winner here at FIRST! Do you like to talk about torque? Do you think six weeks is too short? Is sleep what you can’t afford? Then you’re a mentor here at FIRST! Did you paint your whole body pink? Are purple robes and hats more your thing? Did you cheer every team that you’ve seen? Then you’re a booster squad at FIRST! Is engineering more fun than you thought? Are you keen to take Bill Gate’s spot? Do you think Dean and Woodie are HOT? Then your future starts at FIRST! authored by Connie Crawford, VP at MTA :-) |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
I'm gonna try and find and post some pics of 522 (whatever hasn't been posted and decent enough)
233 759 and whatever teams I may have abundance amount of. I'm starting with Thursdays Practice and moving onward Edit:// As of Current there is the NYC Regionals taking the lead with over 150 pics while every other regional has below 77 pics. I imagine that NY will bring out the most pics esp from me and crazy bear I suspect at least 180 by mid next week |
Re: Week#4 - NYC FIRST! Regional & Social
I am going to sort through all of the pictures my sister has taken during the NYC Regional. I just have to go through all the "boring" and "regular" non-robotics New York stuff, such as Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, Time Square, and the Subway. Once through, I too will post some pictures.
