DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Hey, all info here guys about htis regional!
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
I think that hosting the event at Wayne State was a good move! Awesome Building and the Restrooms are right next to the pits!!! :D
|
Re: DETROIT REGIONAL THREAD
The restrooms are in a perfect location.
The food is in a great location. As for the pits and the competition locations, it's definitely no Houston! :) The people are nice. The inspectors are fair. (One of the volunteers used to be on our team.) Overall, seems to be great regional. Wishing all the Detroit Regional teams good luck! Oh, and our pit is right next to the SCREAM team. :) Cool. |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
This is going to be a fun regional. The only problem I forsee is seating, especially on Saturday. Almost all teams are local, and I'm sure parents will want to come cheer their kids on. I suppose we'll wait and see.
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
the venue is nice. i like a lot. but the seating areas are okay. sitting on bleachers and it only gives you a little space to sit. also, there's subway across the street with a chinese restraunt. :D we get to bring those food in too.....
I hope everyone that is in this competion does their best! practice runs was fun especially for us. Hehehe. But enjoy! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
It's so small... like an OCCRA competition! The only FIRST regionals we've been to before are Ypsilanti and Grand Rapids, so the atmosphere in Detroit was quite a change. Also, we finally have our bar-grabber and our autonomous program working! Good luck to all!!!!!! I'll see you tomorrow! :D :D :D
BTW, I'm surprised that so many teams went to out-of-state regionals instead of Ypsi. Is it just for variety? |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
::wince:: I think it might be bad both days. I know a lot of people are coming tomorrow to watch our team...
Frankly, I get kinda claustraphobic in this kind of setting. I rather like the big regionals such as Chicago or Ypsi. Here at Wayne it seems kinda cramped, and I don't think that teams will be able to go as wild as usual (#1 Advocate of going crazy at competitions!). It's fortunate that there are so few teams, or it could be a LARGE problem. On the plus side, our autonomous program is awesome. And our robot actually works! Good luck tomorrow, everyone! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
yeah. this is a pretty sweet place.
we've got a 45 min drive but i like the setup and its a bit more comfortable than say Great Lakes. The robots look good and its going to be lots of fun, my bet is that Chief Delphi and Killer Bees get together and take the whole thing...... we'll see. good luck and have fun! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Does anyone have updates from todays (Friday) competition? Who's doing well?
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
I'm liking the regional so far. It's pretty small which means more matches for everyone and much less confusion. It's a much different atmosphere from other regionals, but I could get used to it. There's a lot of good teams and the facility is great. Unfortunately there's not much room for expansion so there could never be very many teams there, but it's definitely a worthwhile experience.
Lots of good matches though many seem to be uneventful. Many good teams none-the-less. Killer bees have been doing an excellent job at small ball handling though some teams have found ways to stop them. Chief has a great bot, but they seem to have been having mechanical problems with their bot. Probots drive train is killer and won them an award (I forgot which one already lol). Juggies seem to have been having some troubles with their ball mechanisms, but the last few matches looked as though most of the bugs were dealt with. 515 has a killer big ball grabber. 1447 (Panther Robotics) has an amazing robot for being a rookie team. In fact, all the rookies seemed to have some great looking bots (and there's a lot of them). I can't think of any other teams in specific that I have watched at this moment. Oh yeah, and Paul from 217 Thunder Chickens won the Woodie Flowers award. He's the MC btw and is doing a great job at it. |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Chief Delphi is doing well, as are the Live Wires, Killer Bees, and Team 123. In fact, NBC Channel 4's Chuck Gadica did the weather and interviewed teams while at the competition, so we ran some bonus matches with the top 8 teams.
We ThunderChickens had a rough start, but we bounced back after lunch. Cogratulations to Paul Copioli for winning the Detroit Woodie Flowers Finalist Award! You're a great Announcer, MC, Mentor, and friend, and I'm proud to have you on our team! :D Other awards: 1188 - Imagery Award 33 - Controls Award 406 - Judges Award 857 - Delphi D.T. Technology Award 301 - Xerox Creativity Award (??) 1000 - DCX Spirit Award |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Could somebody be so kind to give us a run down of the friday standings and which awards were won so far?
Thanks :] |

I do know the most important ranking - by some miracle, 818 is currently 13th. We've done this even though our robot hasn't done a single thing it's been designed for - it has problems herding balls, it physically can't hang, and I have yet to see it grab one of the doublers and cap a goal in a match. I've been having fun at Detroit...I like the atmosphere. It reminds me of West Michigan, except slightly smaller. The matches have been fun to watch, and the people have been great. The single best match of the day was the one that didn't count. The local NBC station came down to do a live broadcast for their 5:00 PM news. The actual qualifying matches were done, so they set up a match between the top four seeds. That match was a lot of fun to watch - it had a hanging robot, a capped goal, great human player accuracy...literally, almost everything was in that one match. The second match run for the news broadcast (the fifth through eighth seeds) was also a great one. It's too bad that those didn't count in the standings... If I could change anything for tomorrow: sitting immediately behind Chief Delphi is a bad idea. I like the team and all, but they've given me a massive headache...They've got too much spirit. :) Overall, I had a great time. I'll be there again tomorrow, cheering on whoever's doing well. If anyone wants to talk to me, just look for the guy with red hair in an 818 shirt. :) [edit]Three posts in the time it took me to write this...wow. :D Also, I almost forgot this... Congrats to Paul Copioli - you definitely deserve the WFA![/edit] |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
rodger that!!!!!!!!!! having alot of fun, practice matches were boring, but friday was excellent. the only thing i hate are the bleachers; your very vulnerable to losing something through it.
g0 COSMOS! cant wait till finals :D good luck to everyone! team 123 is in 4th place Team Cosmos!!!!!!!!!123!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! w00t cya tommorow :D |

301 won an award, but I can't remember which one. It was technical though. |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Sorry. Too many bloody technical awards to keep track of. ::blush::
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Anyone get vidoe of the news cast on channle 4. It would be great to see it.
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
I saw one match where the Killer Bees got knocked over and was then pushed in front of one of their corrals.
First 1241 gets capped at GLR, then 33 is used to block a corral. Is it just me, or are people mistaking robots for mobil goals? |

got video of channel 4, but i dont think it was much :S only once or twice they scanned the 'mock' audience |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
It was not chief delphi, it was SCREAM. and we were thier aliance (scream's that is) they knocked them over in auton, then continued to bash them into the driving mode, making the judges subtract 50 points from out score, and add 50 to thiers. the call was good, the act was redicouls, and im going to find it hard to forgive them for that one.
|
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
To forgive who? Scream? That was an interesting match, first smashing our flipped robot into the ball corall, then "accidental entanglement" on our alliances' hanging string, breaking free, and going back for more. Oh well, we're still in 5th.
Anyways, it should be very hard to flip us in autonomous mode again. Now, after we hit the ball, we drop into low and our front wheels drop down doubling our stance and making the robot lean into anything coming it's way. I hear people thought we would let the chiefs beat us so that they could seed higher and pick us....I bet we proved them wrong! Our balls dropped too early (halfway between Autonomous mode and when they were supposed to), but the Chiefs' alliance chose not to replay the match...for the third time. That was a great match. |

Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
i think you guys are one of the most impressive bots i have seen this season. And yes, i am very upset with team scream. the round before that they were beeting the daylights out of our already pinned robot. I really don't feel like pointing fingers on public forums though, so i'll leave the story at that.

Hahahahha. Sorry guys! We were just really pumped up... :yikes: its the spirit love we have for our robot and drivers! After all that yelling, it does give you a headache...matter of a fact I had an headache screaming my lungs out. Heheheh. But overall, we enjoyed it with our spirit, and I also lost my voice a little.... We'll see you guys tomorrow!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!! |

ya i agree, that was the bot that could gather the balls on the inside and feed it through the chute? talk about creativity, even though im very optimistic about my team, i think killer beez gonna win it all |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
My team was SOO upset on our last match. We went to pick up one of the multiplier balls, and we stalled out our motors. after a few seconds, our robot was doing a wheelie. Arearm was lifing our robot, and NOT THE BALL. at the end of the match, i went to get the ball out myself, the mobile goal lifted off the ground before the ball came out. It was SOO far down in there at the start of the match, and our robot got stuck on the dang thing. it was rediculous. Not much you can do tho, just make sure you look at it before you start i guess.

Neither The ThunderChickens nor The Juggernauts made Eliminations. Better luck next time.
Killer Bees knocked out in QF's - Partner dropped the ball there, literally. |

Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
what were some of the best plays of the elimination rounds.
i was in the pit most of the time |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Congrats to everyone at Detroit...especially the teams that made up the eighth seed (which were, IIRC, 1213, 1140, and 1447). It was a lot of fun to see you do so well...and I know that a lot of people were cheering for you in the finals. It's always fun to see the underdogs win. :)
The competition was a lot of fun, even though we didn't do nearly as well as we were hoping we would. I've got some very nice memories from the competition...like winning our one and only match against the powerhouse that is Chief Delphi. That was a huge morale boost for my team - for once, everything worked just like it was supposed to. :) Time for me to start getting ready for Palmetto... |

Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Thanks everyone! We were so happy too...it's been quite a long time since that has happened(i think). eehhehehe. I had fun! Like always, we went nutz! ahahah. I hope that everyone else had as much fun as we did. And a lot of thanks to team 05 for picking us as an alliance, and also to team 313 for the additional help!
-i was surprised that the number 1 seed didn't go onto finals or anything..better luck next time... Chief Delphi will see everyone at Nationals!!!! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD

We had a catastrophic drive train failiure in those last matches which was a contributing factor to us losing. The teeth on our high gear in one gearbox are gone. Let this be a lesson to us and everyone that has any type of plan on building a transmission like ours...USE HARDENED STEEL! We'll be back up and ready with a little work on Thursday in Canada, and hopefully this will never happen again...although we will always check the transmissions in the future before matches. Interesting factoid: Out of our 12 matches we played, our alliances scored points in only two, and in one they actually got us negative points (10 point penalty, we lost by 5). I guess it's the luck of the draw, but we still seeded third! Oh, and congrats to our pals, CHIEF DELPHI and teams 5 and 313. That's 2 in a row for 5! Also, big congrats to Oaktown Crewz (1188) for winning the regional Chairman's Award. If I'm not mistaken, that got you guys into nationals right there...good job! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Congrats to everyone who participated at the Detroit Regional. You all made it a great event, and made it very easy on us referees. We didn't call even a quarter of the penalties that were called at Great Lakes, so that says a lot about the quality of teams who competed. Thanks for playing clean and fair, the way it should be. You made it exciting and fun for everyone.

I really don't know how we accomplished winning two Regionals this year except to give credit to our alliance partners in Pittsburgh and Detroit. Having never won a Regional in our 7 year history, I guess maybe we were due. Without teams 47 and 313, I'm sure that the outcome would not have been the same. They were both terrific alliance partners and the majority of the credit should go to them. Good luck to everyone else who still has a Regional to compete in or are heading down to Atlanta. Dave... |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Team 1037 would just like to express our appreciation in the gracious professionalism displayed by Team 1286 for loaning quite a few of their battery chargers and batteries to us when we were chosen for the finals.
THANKS SO MUCH!!! :) |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Team #1447 would also like to thank Team #1286 for their gracious professionalism, especially when we lost charge from one of our batteries and our charger malfunctioned. The truly exemplify the nature of FIRST competitions.
Congratulations to all teams that were in the Detroit Regional! It was a great match in the finals! |
Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Just wanted to thank teams 1216, and 1000 for inviting us into their alliance, it was alot of fun for us. Also thank you to the winners (5, 47, 313) for such a great match in the end, you guys rule. Thanks to everyone else also, for making it a great first regional for our team.

This regional was one of the nicest regionals we have ever been to. Everyone involved seemed so nice including teams and those running the event. Though seating was kind of tight, we really enjoyed everything about the event. Thank you to those that made this regional happen! And a BIG thank you to 217!!!!! You guys were awesome! Thank you to team 33 as well for being so helpful! (Especially you, Jordan!)

Re: DETRIOT REGIONAL THREAD
Detriot was an excellent Regional. It was fun and had plenty of good competition. Everyone was nice and it all worked out great. I would like to thank Team 217 for all their help. We wouldn't have done as well as we did without their help, especially help from Rick, Scott, and Jim. Thank you for all your help. We will see you at IRI. Thanks.
