It was a gift. Respect that and keep it.

I believe that unused technology is useless technology. Yes, this was a gift, but we don't really have a use for it. If Microsoft's goal here was to help teams out rather than promote their products than I doubt they would mind if we turned something we didn't need into something we need desperately, namely cash.

ehh wouldnt be to sure about that. Microsoft gave the product to the team. If the team turned around to resell it then microsoft is losing money, even if its from somethign they donated. Because, the cash you are getting is the cash that they are losing so if you look at it they would kinda be losing double because they donated the product to the team which they got no money in return then they are losing a customer because you sold there product

I wouldnt be surprised if somewhere on the box said not for re-sale

Lots of things sold on eBay say "Not for resale."

Selling the software would violate gracious professionalism and would be largely illegal. I know that the autodesk software is all not for resale, and that if you make any profit from it, you are liable for a lawsuit. The filemaker software is also not for resale and I'm not sure about the Microsoft software, but I would assume it was donated on the terms that it would not be sold. These companies donate hundreds of thousands of dollars in software, and to turn around and slap them in the face like that would be extremely unprofessional and is a huge mistake. If you need money contact companies, start with microsoft.

There's certain things that shouldn't be sold after they're given. The software (and apparently the ref shirt, if they are required to travel on to the next regional) are some examples.

With a lot of fraternities & sororities, there's a huge problem with the selling of our badges on eBay. Badges are the property of the national HQ and the sister is renting it for life. Upon the passing of the sister, the badge should be returned to national HQ or buried with the sister. We are required to tell our families of this regulation, but many sisters forget as time goes by and the families don't know how to discard of the badge properly. Some organizations have a buy-back fund, some orgs press the legality of the issue, some try to contact the family.

As for the tshirts, since there aren't any regulations as to what can happen with them, I have to assume are fair game.

Well, I did say it was an idea I was considering, not that I'd actually do it.

However, FWIW, the copies of FrontPage and Office seem to be full retail versions that are resellable, I'll check again but I didn't see a not-for-resale sign anywhere. I'm not entirely sure whether this counts as a lost sale for MS, after all, anybody buying FrontPage on eBay isn't going to be buying it at a retail store anyway. Besides, I'm sure MS has already written off the donations. I don't know how gracious professionalism enters into this - I didn't ask for this software and the team doesn't have a use for it, I've asked and nobody on the team wants or needs it - I think this is one of the areas where "gracious professionalism" breaks down because everyones definition of "gracious" and "professional" are different, but thats an entirely different conversation.

Having said that, this is a silly thing to argue over, it was a dumb idea in a thread about FIRST stuff on eBay.

Don't think that!!!

Trust me, Ive brought up a lot of stupid stuff over the years. Any one of the old-timers will be happy to list them for you :)

What matters is that you're not discouraged from posting. You brought in a valid point that hadn't been argued about. Nothing wrong with that. Though we may beat things with a dead horse a lot, it doesn't mean we don't appreciate the post.

Yeah, neither did I, cause I forgot about it and it ended.

I have a funny feeling that I know who won it though. ;)
(Maybe?)

Been there, done that, MS doesn't give to organizations like us. Their corporate giving plan is aimed elsewhere. Just like the Bill & Melinda Gates Fdn. and the Paul Allen Fdn. Which is why I go after other local companies who people like those who graduate from a FIRST team: Smart & Skilled.

</Totally Off Topic>

I wish I had seen this thread earlier. It would be really cool to have a FIRST ref shirt!

The Championship event 2003 T-Shirt went for $6.00 and not to me either. No worries though, it was too small for me and I already have one.

Now, off to find more FIRST stuff on EBay! The FIRST merchandise I find the most on Ebay are pins from the championship event when it was at Epcot so may years ago!

I actually won two 2001 pins cause I missed out on them when I was there for my first year in FIRST.
