MOE 2002

Hey everyone,
After seeing the pictures, not much explanation is required (or allowed by the adults for that matter), but I think you should get the idea we were going for with this season's MOE. We extend from what I've dubbed the 'fetal position' and extend to grip all three goals. Pushers can move the goal independent from the motion of the chassis. I'm not sure exactly what else I'm allowed to say, so if you have any questions, ask away. By the way, we're having some trouble naming this year's bot. So far the ones i like are "Su-MOE" and "MOE hawk." Comments/Suggestions/Questions are more than welcome.

MOE bot

So this is MOE 2002. Its quite impressive that your robot can grab three goals. Aren't those extended arms vunerable though? Also are you sure you can get all three goals and keep a tight grip on them? Can't wait to see you guys in action at Drexel though.

Moe 2002's Bot

I was just lookin at the Moe-bot 2002, let me be the first to say...holy crap!

Umm..I'd love to see video!

Peace,
Andy =)

Robot? I know not this robot? You mean to tell me that we've been working on a robot and not a time machine?

As to video, I may have something buried on this hard drive

Joe Matt 24-02-2002 16:22

Se ya in the pits. We'll be next to eachother (384 385) in VCU. Can't wait to see it in motion and what it looks like in person.

Wayne Doenges 25-02-2002 07:31

Nice looking robot, but let me play devil's advocate for a minute.
While you have your arms deployed, what does your alliance partner do? He can't go over them and it will be hard to go around.
You grab three goals, than what? You keep your opponents confined to their zone, you score 60 points (3X 20).
Unless your alliance can score balls, it will be a low scoring round.

Wayne Doenges

Kris Verdeyen 25-02-2002 09:11

Is asbestos underwear an added cost option?

...want to hurl insults...
...so difficult...
...can't overcome flame suit...
...find self agreeing with Wayne...

I totally agree with you, Wayne. Multi-goal scoring robots are going to be low-scoring robots, in and of themselves. They can win by themselves (especially with good drivers), but they can't score lots of points. They are going to have to rely upon their partner's ball scoring ability, and quality human players. Which is to say that they are going to have to rely upon their partner's ball scoring ability.

By the way, that is one quality flame suit you have there.

AlexM 25-02-2002 11:23

How we score?

Well, the thing about our robot is (and any other 3-goal-grabbing robot) is that we aren't designed to score big points. We're designed to stop the other team from scoring.

Qualifying matches don't mean much to us, we already know that we'll score low in them. But look at finals rounds, which are win / loss only.

If we grab all three goals, we control the match. We get the points for the goals, not to mention the points of the other team NOT getting the goals. You must remember that this goes both ways. Hopefully, other teams will notice this, as we probably will not be on top in the qualifying matches.

Hopefully this helps singe the flame suit a wee bit ;)

DUCKIE 28-02-2002 11:46

MOEhawk.... the lime green and black stop sign.... hee hee hee...

Uhh... I don't know if we can talk about it yet, but.... we do have a certain other something on the robot that is supposed to do some other job that involves points.... uh, ok I'll just stop now.

[I hope that's vague enough for the adults Brian.]

And Strath= "Back-up parts are GOOOD!"

Matt Reiland 28-02-2002 12:25

Three goal robots, in my opinion are going to get hit hard this year. Robots like ours (1 goal only) hit the goal at full speed (12fps) very hard. I can not see how three goal robots with the long arms extended are going to be able to hold on and 'control' the field with two other robots, possibly tanks putting everything they have into getting the goals. In addition 3 goal robots will have to be insanely fast to all three to get them, I have seen claims of 14 ft/sec and even higher this year so the goals will not be sitting pretty in the middle of the field. Time will tell but I hope everyone has many spares.

Don't get me wrong though I like your bot alot it looks very finished all painted like last years, ours is just plain silver.

As for the certain something that scores points, from the picture it looks like a telescoping mechanism to touch your robot in another zone?? Did I win?? Bring spares for that too;)

gniticxe 28-02-2002 14:14

That was my first impression of this strategy as well. We definitley leave ourselves exposed on the field. I think I'm allowed to say, though, that we have those problems covered. Whether we do or not remains to be seen until VCU though. :)

Jim McGeehin 28-02-2002 20:16

MOEhawk Team 365 Video!

I did some digging, and out we come with a 1.3 meg video. No sound, but we're sure you can imagine sounds of your own. Be sure to get the Globe motor *whir* just right for optimal effect.

Great looking bot , as always. And as always, the shirts blind the eyes.
The website looks good too.

Simon 01-03-2002 16:18

we're not planning on having high match scores. think of it this way, though; we're designed for shut-out matches, and if someone sees that we win every time, then we'll get picked as an aliance partner by someone who DOES seed.

ps - go spare parts!

Joe Johnson 01-03-2002 16:31

Calling 'em as I see 'em...

I am not going to say that team 365's robot is not a marvel, because it is very impressive. Thanks for the video.

But... I am really thinking that, unless I am very much mistaken, their robot is not likely to survive 2 matches in a row without serious damage.

I hope they have built a lot of spare parts.

I mean no insult, I am just calling 'em as I see 'em.

Joe J.

Ragin_Kage 01-03-2002 22:53

I think 122 did it best. at vcu they were the #1 seed and picked us. they did an excellent job at doing whatever we needed. they also picked 384, which was the only other 3-goal grabber at richmond. they knew our capabilities and knew how they could help us. when we had the three goals and the other team was trying to push us back, they were on the other side of our arm holding us still. if anyone from 122 is reading this, we hope we get to play with you guys again, you are an awesome group. I heard you'll also be at drexel, so we'll see you again there.

p.s. stupid washers

Thank you for your very kind words. Finals at Richmond was just a sorry state for us three teams. Three broken robots tend not to do so well! Doing a drop down without our shock absorber deployed (turns out a limit switch got bent closed after the previous match) bent us up pretty bad but everything is back to 100% now. Hope you had fun even though we didn't make it as far as we wanted!

~Tom Fairchild~, who also wants to play against a three goal bot sometime just to see what its like.

Simon 10-03-2002 11:46

sorry to hear that you got banged up too. I was busy trying to find parts for ours to fix what we broke to watch that last match (which by the sounds of things from everyone, it was pretty ugly so I didn't miss much). but anyway, we're glad to hear that you're all right. we have some things to fix, but we know what needs work now and we'll be awesome by drexel. hope to play with you guys again soon.

simon

Joe Matt 10-03-2002 13:33

If you saw 3.0 in the second match, you saw it all. It litteraly almost toppled over and only one wing went down half the way. The team that won sat behind us and shook our hands, great GP guyes.

Again, thanks for the words and thanks for your great performance. We lost the second match by a tie-breaker, all while our drive train was in terrible shape (from the fall w/o the shock absorber--all the chains were *terribly* loose, and a bolt fell off on the wheel mount, making it move), so we can't feel too bad, we did our best. Oh, and can't wait to see you guys in Philly ... I think you've made a few of our team members honorary MOE members :D (they have the bandana and wood blocks, and they're crazy about you)

Stephen

gniticxe 10-03-2002 19:19

Yeah, MOE suffered pretty bad through that final elim match, but i think this short dialogue sums is up.

Match has been played, parts from robots are strewn all over the playing field.
Referee hands Human Player our center gripper

REF: Here's your center gripper.
HP: Thanks...

all of you guys are honorary moe members. we were all so happy that we got picked by such an awesome team. I think most everyone agrees (from all of our teams and others) that if we all didn't break, we'd have been an unstoppable alliance. with two goal grabbers and a robot powerful enough to keep us from moving, you had a solid elimination round strategy that would have worked perfectly. we're working through some things at home now and will be up and running in no time. see you guys in philly.

Simon

Tyler Olds 11-03-2002 12:07

yeah we thought a lot about just domninating the matches, it is a good but risky idea, best of luck to ya

DaveO'B365 11-03-2002 22:11

Howdy...

thanks again, 122, like simon said... good luck all at nationals and your next regional! it promises to be fun, i'll see some of you at philly i'm sure, and we'll be making a few modifications that will make MOEHawk beastlier than ever, a few structural additions, and some other things will be made/added at philly, so don't count us out yet! i hope everyone learned as much as we did at VCU, because strength is more imparative than ever... once again, good luck all!

MOE bot

ps- stupid washers

yes Simon, I agree... STUPID WASHERS!!! And remember... we must wear our "pit-beotch" necklaces with pride. For only we shall be given the wacky pit jobs... like fileing the edges of 40 washers. oh well... It turned out to be fun.

And my poor center pusher! (single tear rolls down face.) It never got to prove it's worth. Oh well... I heart making spare parts.

And I also heart 122 -the NASA knights- your castle is very close to swanky, and you all know I luv you guys; You've been honorary MOE members ever since Science Day in DC. When we got to hang out at the hotel, the offices, that silly 'dinner' thing, and the train station together. To bad Dean wouldn't let us ride the I-bot. oh well...

PS- Does MaryDawn post on Chief Delphi Tom?

and so we shall always have the stupid pit jobs. oh well, those jobs have to be done by someone (I only wish lou'd pick someone else).

anyway, to dave's comment, we did learn a lot from richmond including what we need to change. now all we have to do is finish all these things by wednesday. I just hope joe doesn't make us stay too late, cause I like sleep.

DUCKIE 13-03-2002 09:34

Simon... what is this 'sleep' you speak of? It is a forign word to me. Now MOE-tain dew and Frappachinos I understand ;)

Thanx Tom! (I think I have marydawns e-mail address somewhere from DC I'll have to excavate it.)

Jim McGeehin 13-03-2002 20:44

Well, I'm going to try and get one of your nice hats at Drexel. Maybe a trade with my own green bandanna. As for the issue of shirts, I have an answer, but it is in riddle form...

"If the shirt you seek is of green, quite bright.
Then search for Jim with all your might.
Look low, look high, look in the stand.
For a 6'1" student with a green band.
Bring a shirt of your own, nothing's free,
size XL, and a trade shall be."

Alex Forest 14-03-2002 06:57

Where am I going to find an x large shirt!!! Plus, this is probably ruining my chances, but you dont want one of our shirts, they are extremely ugly and boring!!!! =) I will just have to steal someone elses!! :D :D

Perseus 14-03-2002 22:58

GO MOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe3 23-03-2002 21:23

MOE in philly

Well, the Miricle Workerz returned today from a rather interesting weekend in Philly this weekend. We ran into some problems early (grippers), but we overcame them to finish off the qualifying rounds with 5 straight wins. Kudos go out to the pit crew, as seemingly every time MOEhawk returned from the field, there was major damage that we needed to fix. However, every time MOE came on the field, we had a working robot to cheer for. I think that we have found many of our weak spots and have completed the neccesary tasks to fix them. We should have nearly all the kinks in MOE's armor strengthened by Nats.

PS. Thanks to team 433 the firebirds for picking us for the eliminations, we had a great time.

3m6o5ejz 23-03-2002 21:43

yes, a big kudos to our pitcrew for the hard work. No matter how bad it was coming in, it always went out looking new.

Jim McGeehin 24-03-2002 08:00

I'm exceptionally proud of the pit crew getting out a perfect wing in 15 mins. You guys are just great.

Brian, Alex, and Rishad: You guys did great we won our last 5 matches-thats awsome!
I hope well get things straightened out for Florida.

DaveO'B365 24-03-2002 19:15

Straightened out?

Haha, nice pun aman, i'm sure it was unintentional, but i hope we get things "straightened out" too... thanks for picking us. firebirds! it was fun fixin' stuff- competition team, but not fun enough that we need to keep up our record. on behalf of the pit crew, your moral support after match 84 (was it?) was greatly appreciated, and needed, we were under a lot of pressure, but the result was a nice repair job, so, thanks to the rest of ya on the crew too! congrats, regional champs, cya'll in florida

MOE shirt

So, you actually got a shirt? Kudos goes out to you, there must have been an intense negotion process. Just curious, who'd you get it from?

Joe Matt 24-03-2002 21:31

My dad has a crew shirt I could pass as my own. But I wanted one of those cool MOE jerseys. NO, what did I get, the stupid orange polo shirt! ;)

Alex Forest 25-03-2002 07:03

Sorry Stephen, MOE shirts are SOOOO much cooler than crew shirts....didnt we go over this already???

aman 25-03-2002 11:38

MOE STUFF

IF anyone out there wants a MOE shirt with Woody's signature and Dean's im saving it to trade at nationals but u better give me somethin really good for it!

PS: hey alex i dont think u got the moe captain hat!

Joe Matt 25-03-2002 11:48

What do you want?
I have hats, shirts, etc.

PS I also have a Dean Sparky 3.0 hat that I *might* give away if I feel generous (and I get something good in return!)

DUCKIE 25-03-2002 12:21

I agree, our pit crew is amazing. I love doing pit. Especialy when the whole thing was there. It was a lot more fun in Philly than VCU due to the larger pit areas.

Thank you's go out to any teams who get stuck next to us, and tend to get us invading their pit area due to our large "wing-span".

Thank you to Landsdale Catholic for their award.
-For consistantly building robots that keep us up all night.-

I also will have shirts to trade at nationals. i have one from last year and one of this years with dean and woodie's signatures.

look for the only girl in the MOE pit. -with the green hard-hat.

I have to say that I'm guilty for the shirt, guys. don't worry though, I traded for one of nasa's shirts.

Alex Forest 25-03-2002 19:04

Hehehe...I think I got the better end of the deal, our shirts are sooooo ugly....:D

DaveO'B365 25-03-2002 21:28

La dee da

well, since we're not really talking about our bot anymore, and we've kinda broken into some general chit-chat, i'll have a shirt to trade at nats too, i can't promise it won't smell bad though, i've got 2 and i have to wear them both. my bandana is mine though, and there will be so much grease and sweat on it that it will be completely unwanted. so, i'll trade one of my shirts for something equally schwanky.

Well, now we have enough merchandise to sell to other teams so i propose the Moeshop or MOebay
we can sell Dave's oily, greasy shirts along with clean ones from Andrea and Me!
Wouldnt that be swanky!

Alex Forest 27-03-2002 09:18

If you really want to go back into discussion about your robot we can talk about how you guys are taking hacksaws to your poor arms and changing all the grippers, or is that not allowed and top secret???

aman 27-03-2002 10:09

About the Bot

Well our poor hands have been working hard each night to make stronger and better parts. MOEhawk is still in surgery till tonight and hopefully will be better than ever! :-)(-:

PS: hey Alex it can't be 23 already! :-(

DUCKIE 27-03-2002 10:22

I figured that we should put-up a post about MOE's weight. We had a lot of people asking about MOE's weight when we replaced our lightning-hole-filled arms with solid stock...

We removed the center pusher, which was 7 or 8 pounds... and even with the new wing parts we did make weight. With some to spare.

Another thing to add to Ducky's comment of the robot. Many people have asked me about having "1 in. spikes" on our robot. FOR THE LAST TIME: WE DO NOT HAVE SPIKES ON OUR ROBOT!
