Ok i sent them a e-mail and asked if we could use one of their repeaters. Im gonna figure out something that we can wear to make us visible, any Ideas :) ?

p.s. I think we will use the 2m band
p.p.s. We could use more operators, if you know any let them know about this and have them check in.

I'll be in Cleveland, Chicago, and Orlando with my HT, 2M & 70 CM, N9PWI

Greg McCoy 25-02-2002 19:36

I didn't know you were a ham!

RebAl 25-02-2002 20:48

I just took a look in my ARRL repeater manual and found a callsign that belongs to disney with a open repeater, not sure where it is located in disney but here is the info:

Orlando, output- 147.300 mhz, input- 147.900 mhz, call WA4ABQ, made by WDWARC (that name seems to be walt disney world amature radio club), and its listed as "open"

I will review the frequencies that are in use by park operations and pick a open one for us to use as a simplex meeting place if we cant use the repeater.

I will also set up a set of rules to keep things orderly and together. But, we still have some time ahead of us :)

Great Response

Wow! I am impressed that our amateur radio family is so large. I am further encouraged that there are hams involved with such a great project.
If we are ever lucky enough to host a regional competition, I hope that our Keowee-Toxaway ARC will have a special event station. That would spread the word of FIRST worldwide. I look forward to working our FIRST Hams at Nationals.

Yeah, I'm sure a lot of more technically-oriented hams would be interested in helping out local teams.

Event call sign?

Is it too late to get a special event call sign at the Nats? You could set up a booth and make up special QSL cards. This would be great publicity for both FIRST and the ham community.

Alas, I won't be at the nats. But I'd love to chinwag with anyone at San Jose or Houston. I also have one student ham.

Do you know the form number to get a event call sign.

Does anyone want to set up a booth or know where to get donated cards?

Greg McCoy 26-02-2002 20:32

Here's the FCC page on it...

You can probably get one through the ARRL,

I mailed disney about the ham radios and here is the responce I recieved:

Dear Alexander,

Thank you for contacting WALT DISNEY WORLD!

Guests are welcome to use personal, hand-held radios (or transceivers, "walkie-talkies," etc.) while visiting our theme parks, provided they do notinterfere with our existing radio communications system. We recommend that guests use the approved frequency of between 462 and 463 megahertz.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Hello,
My name is Alex (KC2FWL) and I am a member of the F.I.R.S.T. robotics team#329, Me and other HAM's from other teams plan to create a radio net, Inoticed that you have some repeaters on premisis, we wanted to know if we can use one of then durring the F.I.R.S.T. compitition in epcot that will take place 4/25/02-4/27/02. We will be using the radios to provide servicesto teams there and to allow easy communications between teams around the park. I dont know if there are any problems with this or if you would like to assign us a frequency in the 2m band.
-If this message does not concern you please foward it to the correct

I am going to reserve a 1x1 callsign for the nats but I need some help with the name so you can post some ideas and if I get enough I will put up a poll. Here is the infor from Arrl:

The format of each 1x1 call sign consists of a single letter K, N or W prefix followed by a single numeral, 0 through 9, followed by any single letter except the letter X, which is not available to amateur stations.

____
Also does anyone want to set up a booth with a portable/mobile radio as a base station and possibally (if anyone knows how) set up a repeater of our own. Im getting ARRL to donate stuff for us to handout (and some stuff for us :D )

Greg McCoy 28-02-2002 14:58

Two letters and a number kinda limit your creativity...

RebAl 28-02-2002 15:18

I think after we get the 1x1 we can substitute with one we can make up such as FIRST1 or 1ST
not sure, tell me what you think they mean: here Its at the bottom

here are calls that are allready reserved and the dates

Greg McCoy 01-03-2002 19:42

Ok, I didn't realize that. It isn't too often that you apply for a special event callsign :)

While it might be nice to have a special callsign, I don't think it is too crucial to the operation of a good FIRST net.
