People i want to meet at nationals
 

Well i have been posting on CD little over a year. I have met many people online and in person. Mostly Florida people such as george, mike, nathan, andrew, Tytus and the list can go on. Last year 710 did not qualify for nationals so i didnt get to meet alot of the people i would like to meet. So i have composed a list of people that over the year i have posted that i learned to repsect and listen to what they say, because they know what they are talking about. At nationals i hope to complete the task of meeting most of these people and taking a picture with them. Well here is the list (no particular order), I dont know if all these people are going to nats i hope they are. But if i come up to you and ask for a picture dont think iam crazy, just want a picutre of my "CD idols" :D

Don't worry, you're safe.
Stop by the 229 pit and ask for John.
I'm the 229 coach, so I do have some work to do at competition, but there is always time to meet/talk to new people. :)

This goes for everyone else too.
C'mon by the 229 pit and say hello... (especially if you've got my name in your user title)! ;)

Wow... I'm really honored. That's quite a list you have there, and it means a lot to be on it! Hunt me down. I'll be... a little of everywhere, really.

Take a hint from everyone else... JVN isn't that great to meet. He's more of a pain in the butt - if I were you, I'd avoid him all together. And DJ? Don't even worry about it. :)

I decided to make my own list. What the heck? I could make a 'people I'd like to see again' list, but that would go on for pages and pages. I've met far too many great people in FIRST.

Yeah. There are definitely several people that have gained my respect. So called FIRST demi-gods that would definitely be worth meeting but then again last year I got to shake Dean and Woody's hand in front of everyone. That was awesome. I at least didn't wash the hand for several days. I'm planning on going to some of the workshops (college FIRST and pneumatics..oh yeah!.) and some of the presenters would be great to meet. One a side note I talked with two dean's of my college yesterday and they were quite interested in the program. So I might have to step up my efforts to get FIRST here.

I would enjoy meeting most people on this forum. I should have been more proactive when I was at St. Louis aka Prank Monkeys -amanda , Apple Corps - katie, and cooney robotics - ricky, and probably others.

Hopefully I'll at least make the webhug in ATL.

This years webhug is starting to sound like it will be really good. I've never actually made it to one before seeing as how I was always driving the robot during them in 02 and 03. When anyone meets John, be sure to ask for a 229 button, you may get lucky (or horribly terrified) and get one with his face on it :D

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again in Atlanta this year, should be a great time.
P.S. - Be warned, DJ is an interesting person to drive with in large groups.

It's sortof funny...I ended up meeting some of these people at the Midwest Regional...and didn't even realize it until a couple days after.

I'm flattered but make sure to put a gap between the Koko and the Ed. :)
Look for the large group of black and red tie dye and look to the back of the group and I'll most likely be sitting back there with my wife if I'm not (poorly) videotaping a match.

I'm sorry to say that I will not be at the Championship. Perhaps next year. There's hope that our team will be going to IRI (provided that they have it again) but it's only talk at this time. But if you want to talk or whatever, I'm always only a PM away.

I met Dean my freshman year-he signed my shirt at a regional. If you want to meet me, I will probably be at the 782 pit for most of the weekend or in our section of the stands watching matches (wherever that will be)

Me? I just want to thank Brandon for not killing me yet, but otherwise, I don't have the time to find people. I'm going to be doing scouting work, strategy work, and also fixing out uber cool display and wireless scoring system. Neato. If anyone is that interested in me (from the past posts, it dosn't seem so) just ask for Joe Matt (pronounce it like it's one word) in the pits or the stands. Also, I'll be wearing my 'Dave is Pimp' button.

PS- Lavery, you need to sign my shirt and I want to say hi.

Yay I made someones list of respected people.

That said, I have no idea what I will be doing or where, but I will try to keep a piece of ducktape with my name on it on my back.

Also, any photoshop wiz wanna pull together a CD Nametag template? A quick search will yield previous efforts.

Any way to have a web based app add my name so that I don't have to putz in PS to make it have my name printed on it would be stupendous.

It's funny. You ask any normal student to quickly name a celebrity and they say Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake or Beyonce but you ask us and we say Dean Kamen or Dave Lavery or Andy Baker. Strange how FIRST has transformed us.

I have decided to stay in NYC this year and help run the 1st “FIRST Nats Super Bowl Party!” for all the NYC teams that are NOT going to the Nats for whatever reasons.
We are planning a big screen TV(s) and watch the webcast and BYOB. (Bring Your Own Bots). We'll be cheering everyone!
The location to be negotiated! Funding for food to be raised. If anyone is interested just contact me for details (once they are finalized)

I've got plenty of friends, new and old I can't wait to see again.
Plenty of people I'd love to chat with, love to see again.
I'm always eager to meet with those who share the same passions I do (anyone here like robots?)

Definitely too many to list them all.


But...
2 young people I'm hoping to meet in particular:

Adrian "phrozen solyd" Santos (254) and Amanda M (60)

I was INFINITELY impressed by these two individuals during the whole collaboration "debate". Their maturity, eloquence, and attitude (especially considering the ways OTHERS acted) merits a handshake at least.

The forums provide an interesting "first impression" of people, and these two have definitely wow'd me.

The number of people wishing to meet me has steadily declined over the years. I think Erin was the only person to come looking for me last year. I think my popularity has decreased with time.

Actually you and KenL is on my "Top 20" list of CD people to meet!

I was able to check off (on my "A" list) several wonderful CD people this past NYC Regional when they surprisingly came down to volunteer and made my day.
(I still remember my first CD contact- J. Johnson from 47 when the team visited the 2001 NYC Regional- I was speechless, said "hi" and that was it! doh and did the same thing last summer when I meet Andy Baker. doh)

One important thing to remember about many of these "all-stars" is that they're honestly just regular folk like you and I, but are especially dedicated and passionate about this program. I know that when I was in high school, I basically learned almost all of my technical skills from this these forums.

I'd suggest for those of you that happen to meet these people, please take the time to just thank them for their contributions on the forums, technical or otherwise. I think FIRST is filled with people who are deeply underappreciated, and knowing that you've helped someone out or taught them something is very rewarding.

You mean all the money I've spent building the Shrine of the three Gods of Lavery, Baker, and Brandon is a complete waste?!? Duuuuuuude, I even spent hours praying in front of it day and night hoping they will grant me good fortune, health for my family and relatives, and world peace.

What a rip off. I guess the construction of the three marble statue of Lavery, Baker, and Brandon will have to be canceled now. I even had it all worked out: Lavery's statue show him looking up pointing at Mars, Baker's statue show him with his family, and Brandon's statue show him sitting in front of his computer.

Hey, being new to first on a rookie team i want to meet as many people as possibe I think thats one of the good things about FIRST is the people. So meeting some of the influence people in first at the nationals would be awesome. :) Now i would like to take this oppertunity to tell a funny story from regionals at UCF and also apologize. Ok we took vans up there to Orlando and one moring during the competitions we were pulling into a parking spot and we backed in to a couple people from team#710. everything was ok and alright but it was funny and i saw this post from there driver so i thought i take this chance to apoligize for backing in to his teamates car. On behalf of the TECH TIGERS 1251 we are sorry for that. LOL good luck at nationals hope to meet you guys over there at team710 we are from Ft.lauderdale to so hometown homies lol. Anyway we apoligize.

I always say I want to meet people, but I'm usually the combination of me Scouting and being horrible w/ faces doesn't make for recognizing people too well.

That Chief Delphi name tag thing is a pretty cool idea, I might do that. :]

With that said, I'd like to meet Dave Lavery - he seems like a really cool person, and he always puts together the animation for kickoff, so he at least knows where us Animators are coming from :]

People who have started teams with a college while in college.

People who have in depth knowledge of how the teams work with college

Anyone who takes college classes and does FIRST at the same time.

Man There are sooo many people I want to meet. But of course all the hard core FIRSTERS top my list. Too many to list, but many of the sames as above. Like Fluck, Neun, Baker, Lavery, Johnson, Leung, Wong, Big Mike ( even tho I heard he isn't actually all that big ) Erin R, Katie R, Ken W, the list goes on and on ( that is not nearly all it just a small sample )

So stop by the 710 booth everyone and give me and Ryan a howdy hello, or how do you do. Or if you see me walking around and recognize me, I always get a kick out of it when someone shouts out " Stud Man Dan " ( Its the small things in life that amuse me )

Have you ever considered that some people might be scared to meet up with you? :D I know Joe M was looking over his shoulder for you last year. :eek: But seriously, DJ a cool guy to meet (especially when you're bored while standing in line for a frozen lemonade at AstroWorld way too long).

Seems likes everyone wants to meet Dave Lavery (and everyone should cause he is a really cool guy)
Last year a rookie on our team saw Lavery at Annapolis screamed with excitement :

"Dude! That's Dave Lavery! I need to get him to autograph my shirt!" :ahh:
The rest of the team and I chuckled and asked "Why???" :rolleyes:
He said "Because Dave created Stack Attack, and its a great game"

That made me think, "Why was the thought of Dave's autograph so weird to me?" I have autographs from Dean and Woodie like most FIRSTers, but I never was compelled to get one from Dave, even though he is the 3rd most recognizable person in FIRST after Dean and Woodie, a member of the "Inner Circle of Game Creation", and a very important NASA engineer.

To me, he will always be the goofy guy in the Hawaiian Shirt with the Krispy Kreme Crown. :) He is so approachable that you don't need to treat like the FIRST Celebrity he is. I guess I think of him as regular guy, because the first time I met him was in an elevator while we were both lugging gear for our bots into a Congressional Office Building to give a presentation to Congressmen after Dean gave a speech. Dave was a just guy working alongside me in room full of VIPs. I've talked to him other occasions but I doubt he would recognize me.

So my suggestion to everyone meeting him for the first time is to ask him for his autograph, and give him the respect and admiration he is due. Maybe he'll write one of his cool catch phrases like "My other Car is on Mars" or "That’s Pimp!" on your shirt followed by his signature. Then you can show it off and everyone will be jealous.

ngreen, in respect to your question about meeting the college students...i highly suggest you stop by my team 461's pit. all or most of our advisors are college students some of them have been on previous teams in highschool. they are very willing to stop and chat with you.

Yeah Matt had already invited me. I've been talking with the Engineering Dean trying to check out there interest in helping with the program. I'm very interested in Purdue's program since the Boilermakers are kind of a sister school to K-State. That would be great. Thanks.

I only want to meet JVN because he owe me a dinner ;-).

Most other names I see on other's list I've met in the past year from Nationals, or regionals, or IRI. Doesn't mean it won't be GREAT seeing them again. The only problem is, I am notorious for being the quiet one at competition, mostly because I usually only get 2-4 hours of sleep every night and work from 7am in the morning to 6pm in the evening at competition. The lack of sleep and stress from the day usually drive my english speaking skills at least 5 years back.

I'm sorry to say that I most likely won't be making it to nationals :(. If the weather is good, I might fly down for one day - we'll see. To make things more complicated, I'm leaving for a business trip to Europe the afternoon of Sunday, April 18. Therefore, if I do go, I need to be back early.

I hope to see everyone at the IRI.

WOW! Somebody actually wants to meet me at nationals. I feel special. :o I'll likely be walking around quite a bit on the fields. I'm set to be one of the 'alternate' scorekeepers because they are all full, for the full time people. I shouldnt be hard to miss, just look for the tall goofy looking one.

This thing about Amanda Morrison kicking my butt.... sssppphhh!! That will never happen because I'm much taller than her and I can just jump up and miss all over her kicks and punches. :yikes:

Hmm...I'm going to have to get around to introducing myself to CD people eventually. I know that I lurk more often than I post, and that my small contributions usually aren't that great, but still...Eventually, you'll end up with the (dis)pleasure of meeting the biggest pessimist on 818. :)

I've had chances before - I saw D.J. at the GLR when I was there by myself, and I recognized quite a few people at both Detroit and Palmetto, but I never was able to get myself to talk to them. Maybe it would help if I posted a "Who Am I" picture so people had a chance to know what I looked like...

I won't be at Nationals, though...Oh well. There's always next year.

That's about it for this batch of self-absorbed ramblings. If you've actually made it through the post, congrats - you have a strong tolerance for being bored. :D

For all you folks who're stalking Dave...

He's scheduled to appear in front of Epcot's Mission: SPACE attraction tomorrow, April 6, for the unveiling of a plaque that has Sean O'Keefe's quote, "We're back...and we're on Mars!" that will be added to the building facade.

Sean O'Keefe, Orlando Figueroa, and Dr. Catherine Weitz are also scheduled to appear.
