Divisions at Championship?

Attached is just my current prediction based on teams signed up right now and based on the same system I think they used last year. It is just a prediction which is likely to change if more teams are added and/or they use a different system.

for some reason the attached file has an extension of .html. Which makes the computer thinks it should be opened in a web browser instead of excel

Ohh jeez, how did I not notice that! I'm still recovering from listening to 234's chairman's speech alllllllll weekend in Houston last year ;). After that, I dunno if we're ready for the 217-kinda experience.

I wish I could say there is a 229 experience... but it will probably just consist of our HS guys scoping out Thunder-chicks, and our college guys scoping out your robot. Ohh yeah... and we borrow stuff. ;) ...and usually bring it back.

Raul made these predictions using the system they used last year, (which was kind of obvious how they did it :p)...and whats to stop them from using it again? I think he is right as long as no new teams qualify this weekend, and even if they do qualify, FIRST just might tack them on the end and start another 1-4 run...

division two has two of the three FL winners... 61 and 945! Hopefully this is true.. but it probily will change becuase the winners from this weekends events have a chance to enter

What was the system they used last year anyways? I really didn't pay attention to it.

They more or less tok the master list of teams that would be attending and counted off in fours. 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,etc... That was a simple and random way of deviding way of teams into the devisions, but it looks like this years software will be picking the teams for each devision...

Even if they do not add them at the end, if they do use this system and only a few teams are added, your team may still be in the same division as many of the teams shown. It depends on the team number that is added. For example, if team number 700 is added, then all teams before 700 will remain in the division I previously predicted and all teams above 700 will shift together one division up. If another team is added, the shift happens again at that point.

Anyway it is fun to speculate. I will fix the predictions and re-post after they update the team list after this weekend's competitions. I hope FIRST just beats me to it and publishes the divison lists soon.

In past years that may have been the case but this competition is so unpredictable that I truly belive that many robots have a really good shot of rising to the top.
Plus all the divisions contain regional winners and technical award winners so any division you end up in will be a fight to the finish.

I see no reason why they wouldn't stick with the same system. It makes sure there is an even mix of vetran teams and younger teams throuh the different divisions and ensures that the teams are random. The past system was also very easy to impliment.

Well there are at least 11 regional winners who weren't listed as comming. If they come up with the cash they cetainly will. Are we talking about over 300 teams this year?

Ed is right. Here are all the teams that just became eligible this weekend due to winning or charimans or Inspiration or Rookie All Star:

Lone Star: 57
Palmetto: 281, 11, 122, 1398
West Michigan: 1243, 141, 1024, 1272
Silicon Valley: 971, 852 (plus 3 more potential - they have not yet posted awards)

The sad part is not every team can afford to go to the championship even when they earn the right to go.

Last week in Philly, we spoke to the FIRST rep and asked when the division list would be released. His response was that it won't be released until after the last regionals, because they want to make sure that the teams in the top aliances from each regional were split up. This leads me to belive that they aren't just using the 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 system again, at least not in its raw form.

Personally, I'm not sure that I like the fact that teams which have proven that they work well together are being split up, but that is what FIRST has decided to do.

Good teams work well with any team.
67 scored the top score in the nation with Webster Sparx and scored the top score of the qualifyers with us. I don't think they could win a match on their own but they would be a tough out.
Many of the teams at the championships are able to adjust. That's how they got there in the first place.

I know that 852, one of the teams that qualified at SVR, will not be going to Nationals. They can't afford it. At least that's what they told us.

Yeah it is easy to implement but it can leave a lot of teams together in the same division they were in last year. There will be lots of change but you could gurantee more teams were broken apart by changing the pattern.

That is another thing. Last year in Houston we had a very very good robot, but 5 of our alliances did not show up, and didn't even send a Human Player. The other matches our alliances were disabled for some odd reason. So my point is this you cannot depend on your alliance to win you a championship. Maybe it was just bad luck, i hope it was just bad luck, and i hope we have rid ourselves of this bad luck.

Even dead robots can do something. But that's just my opinion. Any who if the championship continues with it's two year pattern, the division we are in should win the whole thing. Really it is quite freaky but we have been in the winning division for our whole two years of existence. Not sure of any other team with that pattern. Being good with ANY team is how you win period. Look at 111 last year or 16 (any year), they consistently win with any team they are with. I've only been driving for 3 years but that is my two cents.

Well at least playing good but then playing with good teams when you have an off match. I've seen both those teams do that. And most everyone will have at least one bad match. Most likely more. If your with a good team when these matches come around, then you're golden.

Yeah that is true but beating a top 5 team with an alliance partner that's ranked like 10th and you and your partner are like 27th and 62nd then THAT is golden.

Because I have a lot of time on my hands, I did some analysis of the divisions:

Division 1 has 15 regional champions (233, 279, 303, 313, 322, 340, 364, 381, 457, 492, 537, 938, 977, 1030, and 1057).

Division 2 is absolutely loaded. They have 20 regional champions (5, 33, 45, 56, 61, 66, 114, 126, 176, 229, 254, 284, 314, 398, 571, 716, 945, 967, 1031, and 1405) including 3 who have won 2 regionals (5, 33, and 254).

Division 3 is the one my team is in. It has 13 regional champions (47, 67, 177, 230, 311, 330, 389, 449, 522, 930, 957, 980, and 1114) and one team that lost twice in the finals (222).

Division 4, I believe, already has a clear winner. The division has 11 regional champions (16, 237, 269, 388, 501, 585, 662, 982, 1002, 1212, and 1369) including one who has won 2 regionals (16).

As I still have "March Madness" I am going to make my final four picks right now, based on the captains of the winning alliances.

Division 1: 303
Division 2: 254
Division 3: 449 (or if you want a non-partisan pick: 311)
Division 4: 16

I make these picks without ever seeing most of these teams compete. But in all seriousness, does it really matter? This is Max Wasserman, Blair Robot Project. Now back to Sportscenter.

Nice work.

Though, I disagree that just because one team has won multiple regionals that they'll do exponentially better than any of the other regional winners. Regional wins are partially mutually exclusive of one another, and it depends on the teams that are at that regional. Why I say partially is because you have to assume that regionals that are close to a general area of teams will have basically the same teams at them, and because of that 2 regional wins from the same general area, though admirable, is less impressive than say, bicoastal regional wins.

What's great about the competition size is that teams with even one regional win will still be highly regarded, because of the size of the divisions. I personally feel that for fairness purposes, the divisions should have a more equal number of regional winners in them than what we assume it will be now. But if they dont, hey, thats great news for those other divisions, because it will be easier to climb to the top of their division, and once the finals happen, you won't have to deal with many of those teams from Div 2, since they will have already knocked eachother out.

Well then you'll love team 69, which won at both BAE and LA (and also seems to be missing from ThirdRide's list). Both regionals were also above average in size.

Edit: 16 won in St. Louis and Annapolis, 5 won at Detroit and Pittsburgh, and 33 won at VCU and Canada

1126 won buckeye, and is in "Divison 4".

yes. of the winners and finalists from the BAE regional, only 501, aces high, 138, and 175 are going. team 40 and team 69 are not going to Atlanta to the best of my knowledge

Time for explanations:

First, sorry to all the teams I accidentally omitted (1126). My bad.

Second, I wasn't quite telling the truth when I said I hadn't seen the teams I picked in action. And when I say I wasn't quite telling the truth, I mean I totally lied (but for comedic effect).

I saw team 303 at Annapolis. We played with them and against them. They're very good. One team I talked to (whose identity I will not reveal) said that their most hated team was 303. And when a lot of teams hate you, you MUST be good.

I watched the Silicon Valley webcast. Through blurried and un-buffered images (darn you dial-up) I think I saw team 254 doing very well. Or it could have been a can-opener. I don't know. (I have got to get DSL.)

I know absolutely nothing about team 311 except that they won the Long Island regional and they're in the same division as their good friend team 1114. And that could mean something in the elimination rounds.

Now as for team 16, my team (449) partnered with them. Not in the qualification rounds, but in the tournament. We were both on the winning alliance. Trust me when I say they're awesome.

Third, nobody should pay attention to my analysis. My picks are guaranteed to be wrong. I'm so inept, I picked Pittsburgh to win the NCAA Tournament. They almost got to the Elite 8.

That's all I have to say right now. I'm actually considering making a tournament pool at Atlanta. Of course, I will have to get around that no gambling issue.

i didnt see this point but i might have missed it, but the best teams can often end up losing, at palmetto the 8th place team almost won in the finals, and the number one team they beat early on, in my opinion, was the dream team of the tournament, so upsets are almost a guarentee....maybe we will be one of those upsets *fingers crossed*

There's a distinct difference between the winners of every round and the winners of the rounds in the finals- I've always loved how this is the case. You're definitely right that some of the best robots don't do so well in the finals, and this could be because they didn't design their robot for the rounds in the finals, because they're played differently.

sorry to get off topic, but as i was reading this i too want to know a bit more on this system they had last year with choosing divisions. when FIRST uses that 12341234 do they start at the lowest numbered team and count up or do they just start somewhere in the middle and go full circle?

If Im not mistaken, last year they started with team 1 and went 1234 1234 all the way through the list

I don't really mind. Our team will do well, as long as it is allied with a good, strong hanger/auto ball dumper

Although I still wish we were in division 1, to form "the old alliance" - 27,111,461

Now that the autonomous on all three is working well, I don't see how we'll lose

The system was different 2 & 3 years ago. 2 years ago they lined up the teams from 1 - ... & the first 10 or so from each row went to 1 division, the next 10 went to the 2nd division, the next 10 to the 3rd & the last 10 to the 4th. They repeated this for each row and that was it. (if my memory serves me right.) I can't remember how they did it in 2001 & I know there weren't divisions in 2000. That was a fun year. I'm not sure if we ever really thanked 22 for picking us way back then. If not, thanks.

I'm JVN. I'm a college student majoring in mechanical engineering at Clarkson University in upstate NY, and a mentor on team 229. I like FIRST.

In 2001, if memory serves me correctly, FIRST lined up the teams according to decreasing average regional score and then did the 12341234 thing.

OK folks, here is my new predictions for Divisions. There are now 294 teams scheduled to go to Atlanta.

Div 3 looks scarry to me - I hope I am wrong.

I like the new listings. Although I wouldn't count on them, we are paired up with both of our partners from Cleveland in Division 1. Division 3 does look pretty rough, the rest of us could only hope that they beat each other up too bad to face any of the other divisions. Did you go through & look for Regional Champions or Finalists, that probably isn't worth doing until the "real" selections come out.

He is a known trickster. I have added a new version for you to practice downloading. I have added a little more to Mark's additions, I included #1 seed & undefeated teams. Now I realllllly can't wait for the actual list to come out.

Looks like when you say "undefeated" it means "per regional". There are some teams that went to two regionals and were undefeated at one, but didn't do so well at another.

122 got thrown into archimedes and isn't part of the order. So V5 is incorrect. Just add 122 to Archimedes in V4 or earlier.
