ok so what happends if 2 of your teams actully play together...would you get win counts for both or just 1?

You get two wins. I go with the teams individual won/loss record and the points. When a team is in the elimination rounds your team gets the win and loss for the allince whether the team is on the field or not (strictly a laziness thing).

If you want to get a basic idea of how the draft will be handled this is sort of how it will be done.

Ed is just getting everyone ready for what will happen next week.

Hmmm... is it a conflict of interest if I end up coaching against one of my fantasy draft picks? Hmm... should I pick 229? (nah. ;))
Should I help out my fantasy picks? Some strategy advice for my #3 pick?

So many interesting questions.
This will be fun.

Ed... any thoughts about splitting this into a few different groups?
I think this game would be more fun with LESS people picking. That way, there is more chance of getting the "dark horse" #3 pick.

Maybe we could have 4 FIRST Fantasy leagues, A-D?

I don't see a problem with picking your own robot.
I want to try with a 90 to 100 person league this year and we'll see about divsions next year (I'm flying by the seat of my pants. My best bet for survival is to keep everything in front of me in one spot).

I say we pretty much have to go with a pre-ordered draft. I don't think we could get 90 people to be all in the same place at the same time. My suggestion is that everyone set up in order all the teams they want to draft after the divisions are announced and either e-mails or pm's them to the people that are running the draft so that no one else sees your list.

I'm going to have everyone PM me their top 50 choices per round, just in case they are not around. I'm also going to have an assistant or two to take up the slack when I'm at work (no more surfing at work. No computer) or school.
During build season it's not too hard to find people on these pages though.

Which would you prefer as teh number one seeding consideration? Win and losses or overall points scored.
I think wins and losses matter most.

i perfer points....your alliance points not the losing alliance pts. i say pts, b/c what if ur ptr gets tipped or broken and iu do alot n get close tot he other score and try and try u still lose, that will hurt you

If your alliance makes it to the elimination rounds, do you get the wins of your whole alliance, or only the ones that you played in?

Xufer 04-04-2004 16:06

Re: FANTASY FIRST

I'd prefer points , where wins and losses are important but hey if you win you get the points if you lose you dont, but it will give teams who lose a few a chance to catch up, just a though.

You get the wins and losses for the alliance. I'm too lazy to figure out who played when plus you win and lose with the whole team anyways so it makes sense anyhow.

Levin571 04-04-2004 16:08

Re: FANTASY FIRST

Points all the way!:D

Jones571 04-04-2004 16:10

Fantasy FIRST has grown fast in less then 24hours we have had 69 people say they want to play! it is great

Koko Ed 04-04-2004 16:13

Re: FANTASY FIRST

the problem with going with points is you get a big advantage if your team gets into the elimination rounds and it's not always the best seeded teams that always get in. In our division last year Children of the Swamp seeded 17 and did not get picked. You penalize allinces (whomever your three teams are) because they did not meet the preferance of seeded teams. There are teams that would get picked no matter what (like 71 Beaty robotics. They'd get picked if they sent a pile of parts out to the field).
At least with wins and losses (with an emphasis on w/l percentage) it's a little more fair. BTW the John V Neun example in the sample is an extream example. I doubt anyone is going to do that well.

A few suggestions for the winner...

Everyone who participates would have to give them CD rep

They would get to have a "FANTASY FIRST Champion" logo for their avatar, or a sticker on their bot

They would get to pick the teams they want in the next years (so they can get 254 every year :) )

I cant think of anything else

This is so awesome...we need to get our own site and everything for fantasy first... ;)

Anyways...I'm all for wins and losses, because that's what strategy is based on, not just pure points. You might have to score extremely high in one game...where the next 35 pts will win it.

You pick three robots from the list of teams at the championship in a draft. After the draft you can trade with other members in the league.
You get the win and losses pf each of your robots in a match and the points they accumulate (none of that loser score nonsense). Top won/loss record plus total points (for a tiebreaker) wins.

Exactly the same thing I've been thinking this whole time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you'll learn all about me: my interests and hobbies, the people in my family, my pets, and more. I've even included a list of my favorite links to other sites.

On this home page, I'll introduce myself and talk about my reasons for wanting a web site. I might put a picture of myself on this page...or just a picture that I especially like.

--Wow...I didn't know fantasy first was so personal. :D

Nice site

Re: FANTASY FIRST

It would be interesting if next year if we broke this down even more. Kinda to incorporate every aspect of FIRST.

Like Include winning awards along with the competition aspect.

Wins losses and ties Sure.

But Getting a team that might win a lot of awards and not a lot games should count for something also.

It'd be like Fantasy baseball, you'd want a bit of both worlds.. pitching and hitting.

John V-Neun's Top Picks!

JVN's Top Picks!
(and guide for Fantasy FIRST picking)

Okay... so I've been asked to play the role of the professional sports analyst, and post some of my "Top Picks" for the fantasy FIRST league. Since I'm participating in this little game, I'm not going to go so far as to post my list, but I will share some insight into how I'm making my list.

Basically, the first thing to consider is... "What criteria is this being judged on?"
The answer: "Wins and losses" then "Overall points".
So when we all go to make our draft picks, we will want the "best" teams. This doesn't mean "the teams that will win nationals" this means, "the teams that will win the most matches". So based on this, it is important to snag the teams we feel are going to win most.

So how do we go about picking which teams will do best?

Well... this is how I'm doing it:
I'm going to pick (in this order):

1. The kick-butts- Those teams that I have seen (or heard of) kicking butt this season. That is, the ones who have seeded highly, and performed consistently. Obviously, the ones who did so against stronger competition are rated higher on my list. I'm also taking some of the "luck" factor into account. Yes, it's true... some teams rank highly, without playing well. This occurs for a number of reasons. When I make my list I'll try to keep these teams off of it.

2. The prospects - Those teams that I THINK will do well. The ones that haven't performed as strongly as others, but may get their act together in time for nationals. Everyone also needs to take into account that the game has been evolving over the past 5 weeks of competition. This means that teams who kicked-butt week 1, may not be NEARLY as competitive in Atlanta. Maybe they performed poorly, because of the way the game was played, but in Atlanta they will be very powerful. There is a lot of prediction going on here. Pick whoever will do best. (this applies above as well... even if someone kicked butt, I may not think they should be on the top of my list).

3. The darkhorses - Those teams that NO ONE expects to do well, except for me. The ones who could take it all, if they get a little luck. The trick to drafting well (in this, and in the "real" FIRST draft) is to get picks that will perform well, even though no one else expects them to. You need to find that random powerhouse that somehow slipped until the 2nd round, and scoop them up.

4. The statistics - Let's face it... no one has seen everybody. There are enough people participating that I'm likely going to get "stuck" with someone who I've never really heard of. This means that I need some way of evaluating these "last ditch" picks. The ones I don't know anything about. How do I do this without being able to talk to them? (blech)... statistical analysis. So for this, I've made a spreadsheet which contains all the seeding data from ALL the regionals played (I will post this as a whitepaper). From this I've ranked everyone in terms of average points awarded per match (2 for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss). I've combined the data for teams that have played multiple regionals. From this, I can have my final comparison, and maybe pull out something good, from a field I don't know much about.

All in all, this is a pretty cool game.
I can't wait to see how it plays out.
There is a LOT of luck involved, but also a lot of strategy.

Good Luck to all,

John

Once the league roster is full I can have the thread locked. Or perhaps doing it in Chit Chat instead.
