Update from York
I found a wireless connection here and decided to post an update. The qualification rounds are almost over and we are currently the 1st seed, with 222 in 2nd behind us. We are having so much fun, we had 8 qual matches today.
The results of the matches that we were in. Match Red Red Blue Blue Score 2 1123 316 116 222 90-115 W 4 222 357 487 116 ?-30 L 6 84 116 341 1111 20-20 T 8 222 116 487 7 90-25 W 13 116 222 1123 487 35-0 W 15 225 1123 116 316 70-80 W 18 1123 116 7 341 20-25 L 20 1111 222 357 116 65-60 W Also, the rest of the Iron Fever exhibition is really neat. They have all sorts of air powered model things built by hobbyists, random mill bits for $5, tabletop drill press, colletes of every size, lathes, DROs, everything a machinist could want.(Almost, and for everything else, there are free MSC books) In the other room is a really big water tank that has had RC boats tooling around in it, including submarines. Mini battle bot competition, with 1'x1'x1'x1lb robots. So cool that you wish you were here. I'll post an update after/during the finals. Wetzel |
Elim alliances
The elim round alliances.
1 222-316 2 116-357 3 341-84 4 225-487 5 007-1123 1st seed has a first round by, and 2v5 and 3v4. Double elimination. Also, teams that knock off the 10 ball durring autonmus mode get 10 points as if they scored it. If your robot is suffering from DDS (dead drive syndrome) you get 6 balls at the start instead of 3. Re: Finals
This was a fun day. Thanks to 225 for all the organizing, especially since we won't have the Maryland State Fair this year. :(
The exhibition organizers were so pleased we've all been invited back next year! |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
Props to 225 for hosting an well-run event at a wicked awesome convention.. Thanks to 84 for staying strong through the entire playoffs- i don't even remember you guys breaking anything and you were easily the most physical defensive robot out there. Blazing speed = awesomeness..
Those finals were mad stressful, I thought for sure we had lost (especially after our spool decided to tangle itself prior to the final final match), but some bad luck on the other side helped us take it all- 222, you guys always scare me, isn't it ironic how we ended up against eachother at PARC finals and now SF finals, I wonder if we'll ever actually be together- Can't wait for Ramp Riot.. I'll most likely not be able to go to DoD or Bash as I'll be 6 hours north at college.. bleh |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
Wow......Wetzel's updates are more information than I could have provided!
Thanks everyone for making a great day. Looks like there will be a "Summer Frenzy II"......or maybe a "Summer (whatever next year's game is)". Sooo....its time for the constructive criticism & suggestions. Keep in mind it WAS our first attempt at this (and that we still didn't send the prize & entry refund checks ;) ) Special thanks to Greg Perkins for serving as head ref --- he led a crew of 225 alumni - most of whom didn't know the game!! There were some disagreements on scoring interpretation -- but no ugliness associated with it. Everyone's grandmother would have been proud. :) Congrats to 341 & 84....a well deserved victory after on-the-edge-of-your-seat finals! Lisa T :) |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
Summer Frenzy was great! The venue was super and when paired with 'Iron Fever" provided an experience our kids and adults won't forget. (Some of our teachers and engineering mentors were like kids in a candy store!) :ahh:
225, you did a wonderful job in putting the whole thing together. Things went smoothly and you have a lot to be very proud of! Miss Daisey, Chuck was honored and very pleased to go to the finals rounds with you. We were a very effective partnership today. Thanks again for the invite and the awesome ball handling and driving. 222 and 316, you certainly gave us a run for our money. You're an awesome opponent, sister team! Thanks to everybody attending for helping to make this the wonderful day it was. You were all truly 'gracious professionals'. (Grandma would love you all.) |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
I just wanted to thank Mike Wade, Ron Karpinski, Pete Baltzell, and Team 225 for putting on an amazing comp.
A big thank you to our Championship partners Team 84 CHUCK! It is always fun working with your crew. As always teams 222 and 316 take you to the limit. The finals came down to just a few balls. They are awesome competitors and true professionals. Good luck to everyone in the coming Fall season! Al Ostrow Coach Team 341 |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
Though I was not there, I want to send out Congratulations to Teams 84 and 341! Excellent job to both of you, and I hope to see you all at Duel on the Delaware in October.

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
This event was excellent. The entire thing was very well done. I really enjoyed myself. The competition was intense. Every single team that attended deserves a big huge congrats. Everyone appeared to have a really good show. And all were in good spirits.
This being done in conjunction with the Iron Fever Expo was definitly the way to go. There were so many neat things. Being a big John Deere fan, this was so cool, cuz there was Deere everywhere. All in all this was an exquisite event. Thanks team 225. |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
I would have to say this was one of the greatest enviroments to have a competition. I think I personally spent more time looking at stuff at the expo and playing with my rc car than with my team. We had a great time despite our robots problems. As many of you know our robot rarely has problems! Atleast our 3 speed tranny didnt fail us :ahh:
The only reason why I can think that our robot was in such bad shape is because it has too many miles on it. We already have 8 competitions (3 FIRST, 5 minis) on our 2004 machine and atleast 3 more to go. It was a great time talking to other people outside of FIRST who build other things besides robots, such as air powered turbine engines. I even talked to one guy who has a daughter that lives in Tunkhannock. I even got a mini mill hobbiest to give us a 4 inch piece of bar stock to fix our cracked ball caster mechanism. I will be there next year! :) Well I am going to recruit more teams! |
Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA
As always - I thoroughly must thank Mike Wade for his dedication to FIRST. I drove on his field for two years, and without him - a large growth within FIRST, the Mid-Atlantic area, and within myself during my driving days would have not occurred. So, much Thanks to Mike for providing the field and many more great experiences.
To my alma mater CHUCK- you guys just keep fighting year after year to produce tough robots and to make a stance in FIRST. Excellent showing and CONGRATULATIONS. James, you have become a very talented driver... your defensive skills are remarkable and I want to wish you and your floor crew the best of luck in your senior year. In addition, CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Daisy on a well fought battle, and coming out on top. The Tigertrons - I have watched you traverse through many of your battles this season up and down the eastern seaboard. You had an excellent showing all day just as always, and a long battle through the finals. Best of Luck throughout the rest of the season. Mr. Karpinski - much, much thanks for the information on parking the motor-home at the Expo. The convenience of not having to take the transit system in and out of York was wonderful. To you and all of 225 an excellent venue choice, everything was incredibly eye pleasing from corner to corner. Congratulations on a wonderful event, and best wishes with planning for next year. Well, I'm exhausted after a long weekend in the York area. What can I say - any event with Mr. Lavery is an A+ must see event! :yikes: |
