Team 116 is interested in coming, although Im not positive we will. If rhe competition at MSF is indeed canceled(the decision isnt official yet), we probably will. Hope we can come.

Mike Wade is the one bringing & running the field at our Summer Frenzy. He was anxious to do something since there would be no MD State Fair competition. I thought it WAS official....but I don't know

Ohhh....so it depends on the company??....LOL

So far NOONE has completely committed.....but there's been signs of interest from 7, 116, 341, 1123....and of course we (225) will compete too.

Maybe 859 could sign up and draw others in! ;)

lol, no it doesn't depend on the company. I was just curious. I'll talk to the teacher in charge of us and see if he's interested in doing it.

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

....did I mention it will be in a large AIR CONDITIONED exhibit hall????

It is at the Fairgrounds.....but not during the York Fair......it is a machine-type expo......an audience that will probably easily catch the "FIRST disease" that we all have!!

So go ahead....pencil that in.......Aug 14th - Summer Frenzy - York, PA

This is one of the many events my team is discussing attending, I certainly would like to attend, 225 has supported us with PARC for so long, I honestly wouldn't mind giving a little something back what so ever. Right now most of the Mini's we are discussing are still tenative, but hey, we did six last year, maybe we will do more this year ;-).

Peace,
Dave

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

Three REALLY GOOD reasons to consider attending the Summer Frenzy...

1) It sounds like it will be a great summer competition. A very good way to fill up a summer weekend. I even heard a rumor that they may make the judges wear kilts... :)

2) The competition will be held at the Iron Fever Expo!!! Cabin Fever and Iron Fever are the major east coast machinists and metalworking hobbyist shows. They always have some of the coolest displays and exhibits around, particularly if you are interested in machining of any type. Don't laugh this one off - the entire show will be FULL of active and retired machinists, mechanics, and engineers. Need a few more mentors or machinists on your team? This is the PERFECT place to find them, get them excited about FIRST, and sucker them, er ah, draft them on to your team before they know any better.

3)Harley-Davidson factory tours just four miles away!!!

To Ron Karpinski & Team 225:

Team 341, Miss Daisy will proudly attend Summer Frenzy!! We are excited to play the game and to support our friends on 225, York High. Mike Wade and 225 have also been regulars at Ramp Riot and we know the quality that these folks represent.

The other reason we will be attending is that MY TEAM HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY ABOUT GOING!!!.

If you need any advice, supplies or suggestions, please let us know!!

Our coach (oz_341) told us today that we were coming to summer frenzy and I really couldn't be much more pumped. this will give our seniors another competition before leaving and 225 have been great friends to us for a long time.

Having a summer event is just an awesome idea, 3 months and counting...

I'm hoping being the countdown to Summer Frenzy is real close that someone from 225 or the vicinity of York, PA is lurking the forums. I am trying to find information regarding the actual fairgrounds and if there would be enough parking area to park a 30 foot motor-home. Do they have special RV parking? Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

The frenzy is rising!!!

Mike Wade delivered court today. Ron Karpinski said the venue is awesome (I couldn't make it over today) and the Iron Fever sponsor guy is already talking about NEXT YEAR!

Update on teams. It was last posted that these would attend:

7, 84, 116, 225, 306, 339, 341, 357, 365, 487, 539, 768, 1111, 1123 & 1279

For various reasons 306, 365, & 1279 have regretfully dropped out, :( but 11 may attend. :)

I just burned 2 disks of Frenzy music.....nice mix of alternative, rock, techno, hip hop, and silly dance types. Volume level will be at the discretion of Iron Fever Sponsor guy.

There is enough sponsor $ to return your entry fees AND a little prize money! :D

We've got a lot of locals that have never seen our bot in action. Please help us put on a good show. What we lack in numbers, we'll have to make up in SPIRIT!

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

i can't wait till this saturday! woohoo! who cares how many teams are there, we'll definitely show all the spirit we can, I know Miss Daisy will! (For all who don't remember, we typically have a nice african drum along with us to boost the groove... that's me) I've been to the cabin fever expo for the last two (?) years now, and I can tell you, we'll be competing in the right place- talk about a good audience, knowledgeable engineers all wondering what type of energy fuels our robots... If this expo is anything like the cabin fever one, the reason I mention fuel is because half the show is gas-powered engines, and the other half is air-pressure engines. when I go I always keep a lookout for inexpensive used tools. I'll do the same at this one.. if i have free time! See you all there.

Update from York

I found a wireless connection here and decided to post an update. The qualification rounds are almost over and we are currently the 1st seed, with 222 in 2nd behind us. We are having so much fun, we had 8 qual matches today.

The results of the matches that we were in.
Match Red Red Blue Blue Score
2 1123 316 116 222 90-115 W
4 222 357 487 116 ?-30 L
6 84 116 341 1111 20-20 T
8 222 116 487 7 90-25 W
13 116 222 1123 487 35-0 W
15 225 1123 116 316 70-80 W
18 1123 116 7 341 20-25 L
20 1111 222 357 116 65-60 W

Also, the rest of the Iron Fever exhibition is really neat. They have all sorts of air powered model things built by hobbyists, random mill bits for $5, tabletop drill press, colletes of every size, lathes, DROs, everything a machinist could want.(Almost, and for everything else, there are free MSC books)
In the other room is a really big water tank that has had RC boats tooling around in it, including submarines. Mini battle bot competition, with 1'x1'x1'x1lb robots. So cool that you wish you were here.

I'll post an update after/during the finals.

1st seed has a first round by, and 2v5 and 3v4. Double elimination.

Also, teams that knock off the 10 ball durring autonmus mode get 10 points as if they scored it. If your robot is suffering from DDS (dead drive syndrome) you get 6 balls at the start instead of 3.

Props to 225 for hosting an well-run event at a wicked awesome convention.. Thanks to 84 for staying strong through the entire playoffs- i don't even remember you guys breaking anything and you were easily the most physical defensive robot out there. Blazing speed = awesomeness..

Those finals were mad stressful, I thought for sure we had lost (especially after our spool decided to tangle itself prior to the final final match), but some bad luck on the other side helped us take it all- 222, you guys always scare me, isn't it ironic how we ended up against eachother at PARC finals and now SF finals, I wonder if we'll ever actually be together-

Can't wait for Ramp Riot.. I'll most likely not be able to go to DoD or Bash as I'll be 6 hours north at college.. bleh

Wow......Wetzel's updates are more information than I could have provided!

Thanks everyone for making a great day. Looks like there will be a "Summer Frenzy II"......or maybe a "Summer (whatever next year's game is)". Sooo....its time for the constructive criticism & suggestions. Keep in mind it WAS our first attempt at this (and that we still didn't send the prize & entry refund checks ;) )

Special thanks to Greg Perkins for serving as head ref --- he led a crew of 225 alumni - most of whom didn't know the game!! There were some disagreements on scoring interpretation -- but no ugliness associated with it. Everyone's grandmother would have been proud. :)

Congrats to 341 & 84....a well deserved victory after on-the-edge-of-your-seat finals!

Summer Frenzy was great! The venue was super and when paired with 'Iron Fever" provided an experience our kids and adults won't forget. (Some of our teachers and engineering mentors were like kids in a candy store!) :ahh:

225, you did a wonderful job in putting the whole thing together. Things went smoothly and you have a lot to be very proud of!

Miss Daisey, Chuck was honored and very pleased to go to the finals rounds with you. We were a very effective partnership today. Thanks again for the invite and the awesome ball handling and driving.

222 and 316, you certainly gave us a run for our money. You're an awesome opponent, sister team!

Thanks to everybody attending for helping to make this the wonderful day it was. You were all truly 'gracious professionals'. (Grandma would love you all.)

This event was excellent. The entire thing was very well done. I really enjoyed myself. The competition was intense. Every single team that attended deserves a big huge congrats. Everyone appeared to have a really good show. And all were in good spirits.
This being done in conjunction with the Iron Fever Expo was definitly the way to go. There were so many neat things. Being a big John Deere fan, this was so cool, cuz there was Deere everywhere.

All in all this was an exquisite event. Thanks team 225.

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

I would have to say this was one of the greatest enviroments to have a competition. I think I personally spent more time looking at stuff at the expo and playing with my rc car than with my team. We had a great time despite our robots problems. As many of you know our robot rarely has problems! Atleast our 3 speed tranny didnt fail us :ahh:

The only reason why I can think that our robot was in such bad shape is because it has too many miles on it. We already have 8 competitions (3 FIRST, 5 minis) on our 2004 machine and atleast 3 more to go.

It was a great time talking to other people outside of FIRST who build other things besides robots, such as air powered turbine engines. I even talked to one guy who has a daughter that lives in Tunkhannock.

I even got a mini mill hobbiest to give us a 4 inch piece of bar stock to fix our cracked ball caster mechanism.

I will be there next year! :) Well I am going to recruit more teams!

Ashley Weed 15-08-2004 16:13

Re: SUMMER FRENZY in York, PA

As always - I thoroughly must thank Mike Wade for his dedication to FIRST. I drove on his field for two years, and without him - a large growth within FIRST, the Mid-Atlantic area, and within myself during my driving days would have not occurred. So, much Thanks to Mike for providing the field and many more great experiences.

To my alma mater CHUCK- you guys just keep fighting year after year to produce tough robots and to make a stance in FIRST. Excellent showing and CONGRATULATIONS. James, you have become a very talented driver... your defensive skills are remarkable and I want to wish you and your floor crew the best of luck in your senior year.
In addition, CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Daisy on a well fought battle, and coming out on top.

The Tigertrons - I have watched you traverse through many of your battles this season up and down the eastern seaboard. You had an excellent showing all day just as always, and a long battle through the finals. Best of Luck throughout the rest of the season.

Mr. Karpinski - much, much thanks for the information on parking the motor-home at the Expo. The convenience of not having to take the transit system in and out of York was wonderful. To you and all of 225 an excellent venue choice, everything was incredibly eye pleasing from corner to corner. Congratulations on a wonderful event, and best wishes with planning for next year.

Well, I'm exhausted after a long weekend in the York area. What can I say - any event with Mr. Lavery is an A+ must see event! :yikes:

First off, congrats to all teams that competed and a special congrats to 341 and 84. You guys put up a great fight. I know my team and I had a blast going up against you guys. From a kid from the stands screaming for our team and sister teams, to a rookie operator going up against you guys was an honor. It's an honor going up against all teams. It's always fun. Oh, and thanks to 316 for being such a great alliance partner. We had great time running with you. Well, can't wait for the next one.

I would just like to thank team 341 for picking us to be their partner. I believe that we made a very good team together. Who knows maybe we will team up at another off season event? 222 you guys were great opponents even if your arm was disabled for the last two matches.
