Interesting team names
Are there any team names out there with an interesting story to explain them?
for team 138, we chose Entropy as it described our 6 week build period quite accurately... that is to say that the team gradually came to a state of complete and utter chaos in trying to complete the robot on time! interested in hearing from others- -RoteAugen |
Re: Interesting team names
I alway liked the chaos teams (chaos, perpetual chaos, neverending chaos, there are probably more, ..chaos to the infinity plus one and so on - j/k...) I'd like to hear how those team names came about.

Our team is named the Techno Ticks because we are from Lyme and Old Lyme CT, where the first cases of Lyme Disease were documented.

Re: Interesting team names
Hmm... Rice? It's an acronym of sorts. Our advisor came up with it. Respect, Impulse-control, Cooperation and Equity.

Re: Interesting team names
Our team name (the Monsters) came from a play on the Loch Ness Monster story (or Champ, the Lake Champlain Monster). Our team consists of the schools from Walled Lake, Michigan, and since we had more than one school, it was difficult to use the school mascots. Therefore, we cooked up a story about the "Walled Lake Monster", and our team became the Walled Lake Monsters.

Just kidding! ;) In case anyone is wondering about Sie-h2o-Bots. Sie, short for the Siemen Company. World wide manufacturer of telecomunications equipment based in our hometown and our largest corporate supporter. h2o, chemical reference of water. Our team is based in Watertown, CT 06795. Bots, short for robot, basically self explainatory (we are a robot team). Our nick-name is T.R.I.B.E.---Taking Robotics Into Bold Experiences. This is the third nick-name for our team. Some of you veterans may remember us as the Black Magic team and Sunseekers (our rookie '99 and sophmore '00 years). |

Re: Interesting team names
Lol, of all the questions to ask. Our name has probably the most interesting of all stories behind it. Epsilon Delta, Ed, or E D. Well the year we came up with it we had an arm that wouldnt stand up. If you cant put that together with words that start with the letters e and d, dont bother. And we decided we liked the name, so we changed the letters to stand for Epsilon Delta and adopted the greek symbols for them for our logo.

Re: Interesting team names
When we were holding meetings for our team name back in 2001, we ended up with SWAT Mobotics...
I still don't know why we went with SWAT... (no offense to the current SWAT team... number 771 or something or other..... I can never remember the numbers. You gals developed your team name into something great... we just had... SWAT... with no purpose or acronym or anything) The "Mobotics" end of it was a reference to our school name (Mowat). Lots of events and teams there are a pun from "Mowat" (i.e. Mowapalooza). At first I was adverse to naming it Mobotics, but it's grown on me, and now I wouldn't have it any other way. Last year in 2002, we just dropped the SWAT and we're now just 783 Mobotics. (We almost named the team CTRL+ALT+DEL..... My idea by the way... fell short to SWAT and Mobotics though :( ) But I still have to give kudos to my favourite name yet, "Division By Zero", it pwnz |

Re: Interesting team names
Well we started with WicKED (Whiz Kids Engineering Design) but decided that wouldn't appeal so well to parents and sponsors. So then we came up with NERDS (New Energy Radical Design Systems) but the kids didn't want to wear nerd shirts at school (I haven't yet figured out why) so we finally settled with ACE (Albion Competitive Engineering).
Now we just need a number to go with it. Allison |
Re: Interesting team names
The year the team started the students voted on "Augustus Roboticus Maximus" for the name of the robot. This was dutifuly stenciled on the side of the robot. During the first comp the robot was WAY over weight. After a drastic weight reduction just about the only letering left that was contiguous was "GUS". GUS remains our name today.
228 Team GUS ps: Augusts Roboticus Maximus was REAL dificult to fit into a chant!!!!!!!!! :D pps: Team 1071 MAX was a spin off from us and they chose the name to show there allegiance to GUS (from Maximus). :) |

The Indiana Prank Monkeys:
In an episode of the Simpsons, Homer becomes Mr. Burns' prank monkey, and must perform pranks on residents of Springfield for Mr. Burns' enjoyment. Why this is our team name? Um... because Simpsons is an awesome show. And... yeah. The kids voted on it, it's their team. Our mascot (the ugly monkey seen at http://www.team1020.org/ ) was made for us by our website sponsor, Spinweb. ...but I think my personal favorite may always be the Nerds of the North. It cracks me up every time. :) |

here is the story behind The Gizmos ... we were originally The Mafia and our bots name was The Botfather .. well when I went to my school to ask for a loan for the registration fee, my vice principal said that we could not call ourselves The Mafia and then she decided on The Gizmos in about 2 minutes. I was not going to argue because she was making the decision to give us almost $7000 CDN.
its changing next year though .... but during the finals at the canadian regional, i thought of THE best name that we should have used this year .. but we cannot next year ... we should have called ourselves THE ROOKIES! ... so if you are going to be on a rookie team next year and need a name .. feel free to use it ...!! |

Re: Interesting team names
Our team nickname is Site 3 Engineering, or S3E.
When the team started and people were trying to come up with names, our arm operator threw out the name Side 3, which is a reference to the Gundam anime. This is how www.gundamofficial.com defines Side 3 in its glossary: "A cluster of space colonies, also called "Munzo," which is located at the stable region in Earth orbit known as Lagrange point 2. In U.C. 0058 Side 3 becomes the independent Republic of Zeon, and subsequently the Principality of Zeon, though the Republic is re-established at the end of the One Year War." We changed "Side" to "Site" and tacked on "Engineering" to make it more robotics related. I really like our name. Some people think it's kinda strange, but nobody has been able to come up with a better one that the whole team agrees with, so it's S3E for good. |

Stoney Creek was a brand new high school built two years ago and thankfully we were able to get a team started with the help of Ford sponsoring us. However, we only had 8 people join from the 900 some students that went to Stoney Creek, so we invited students from our crosstown rival, Rochester High to join our team and bring our number to 16 strong! :) That's how S.C.R.E.A.M. was born!!! |

Re: Interesting team names
The origins of "The PINK Team"
Everybody asks us this question, "Why is your team pink?" Well this is why (according to some information I have gathered from team mentors and alumni from Team #233). When our team first started, there was going to be a meeting held to see what our team image was going to be; basically all spirit ideas would be discussed. The day the meeting was held, only three girls showed up. Knowing Mrs. Passmore (our team's head coordinator, also known as Mrs. P) said that since they were the only ones to show up, everybody else on the team did not care what would be decided as our team image. So the girls instinctively thought it would be funny to have a pink team. And so it was decided that the team would be entirely pink, even down to the robot. After the meeting, the girls graciously told the rest of the boys on the team that it was decided that the team image would be pink, and nothing but pink. Enraged, they told Mrs. P that this was "not cool" (I needed to censor what they actually said). But she told them that if they wanted there voice to be heard for a vote on the team image, they should have been to the meeting. And so the boys were forced to wear the pink shirts to competition, or they would get kicked off the team... no one left the team. After our rookie year, we got a few remarks from other teams. But eventually our reputation grew and we made this prank work to our advantage (as a team). :D |

Re: Interesting team names
Our name is weird because the name "Killer Bees" actually has nothing to do with our school....whatsoever. When the team started back in 1996, they were with a different high school, Avondale, whose mascot was the yellowjacket. Their school colors were yellow and purple....look at out logo. Our school joined Avondale in 2000, and they added some stuff to the bee to make it look more Irish (we're the Notre Dame Prep Fighting Irish). They added a shamrock in his eye and a.....crack pipe looking thing that's apparently Irish. They also added some green to the logo. Well, Avondale left the team before the 2003 season, and now we're the Notre Dame Prep Killer Bees. Yellow and purple are still the main colors (look at our arm last year), and green is thrown in once in awhile.
Also, If you look, we "borrowed" our bee from Georgia Tech. Merchandise with "our" be on it was all over in Atlanta! |

Re: Interesting team names
Back in 2000 Miss Daisy actually came in 2nd for voting.. the next year our head honcho decided it was time to have a femine name, so everyone groaned and moaned through our first two competitions.. But then, people started to say things like "we love miss daisy," so we decided to renew the theme- its really been awesome, everytime we see something 'daisy' in the stores we grab it, and whenever girls see our robot theyre like "ooh, miss daisy"...
yeah, after 3 years of being miss daisy I sometimes find me calling myself a daisy, eh? |

Our team name is Screws Loose. We are a rookie team (well, I was on team 949 last year, but the rest of the team is new). Some people on our team are kinda crazy, so we say we have "screws loose" in our heads. We also figured we'd have some screws loose on the robot. (which we did) Oh, and our logo (my avatar) is a scew with a strait-jacket on. On the back of our shirts, we had a picture of a money holding a screwdriver and scratching his head. (he just set the screws free). |

Team 93 - the N.E.W. Apple Corps
N = North (Appleton North High School) E = East (Appleton East High School) W = West (Appleton West High School) All three are high schools with students involved on our team. The "Apple" comes from our hometown of Appleton. "Corps" is a play on "core". The dictionary definition of corps is "a group of people with speacilized training organized to work together". Fits pretty well! Sean p.s. I'm please to see that SPAM stands for something and isn't just a favorite form of meat for the team in question! |

Also, Team 237 has named it's robot for the past so many years P.A.L. It has two meanings, Professionally Automated Landrover is what it semi- stands for, but also our main advisor's last name is Pallokat and everyone just calls him Pal for short. I guess the robot name is a dedication to him since he was one of the main people who started the team. |
Re: Interesting team names
My team's name (Binary Bulldogs) comes from our school's mascot (bulldogs) and the fact that our team number 1110 also doubles as a binary number. Our robot's name (Agent Schmidt) is a play on words, for one Schmidt is the name of our very dedicated advisor and Agenst Schmidt sounds like Agent Smith from the Matrix.

Re: Interesting team names
Our rookie year we were called the M.I.N.T.s it stood for something like Mounties In New Technology. I am not sure if that was the exact acronym, I wasn't on the team yet. Anyway, we basically blew (our robot base was made out of steel). So the next year we felt the need for a new name. We choose firebirds since the pheonix rose from the ashes. So we rose from the ashes of our first year to be the firebirds team we are today. Not to mention it is a catchy name. :]

Re: Interesting team names
Our rookie year (1997), team 67 (at the time 47 i believe) was
H2OT Hyper Hex Offender Team I believe our logo had both flames and dripping water. The fields were hexagon shaped back then, which is why we were the hex offender team. It may have been as early as our second year when it simply became: HOT Heroes Of Tomorrow which is the name we've kept ever since. So I guess it is an interesting name, since it was always pronounced "hot" even though the acronim was changed. I believe our robot has always been reffered to as the "HOTBOT". |

Re: Interesting team names
I am surprised that no one from MOE has posted yet.
MOE stands for Miracle of Engineering, it is a play off our main sponsors, DuPont's, slogan Miracles of Science. Even though I love the sound of my own voice, and I love to type even more, I will spare posting MOE's team beginnings and just post a link instead to our website This years robot name is MOEbius, a mobius strip is something that continues on forever. We thought that is represented our team well because our love for FIRST and inspiring people about science, technology and engineering is always reaching on. And also if you are ever in our pit it seems like the Number of students in there is ever reaching also :) |
Re: Interesting team names
We (Team 322) have been the FIRE team since we started in 1999.
F - Flint (as in Flint, MI, where our 3 high schools are located) I - Inspires R - Real E - Engineers I think its a pretty cool name for a FIRST team and easy to play on when it comes to naming the 'bot. Our robot is officially the Fire Hazard each year, though I believe it may have began life as the Firestorm a few years ago. We always end up with an unofficial nickname for it. We had "Rudy" in 2001. It had long spindly legs (to go over the bar in the evil teeter-totter game) and a 4-pronged ball handler. In it's home position, especially with the red light, it bore a strange resemblance to a certain red-nosed reindeer. Hence the name "Rudy". Then, there was "Tweetie" in 2003f or the "Stack Attack" game . It was a sinister little diamond plate machine with a Tweetie-bird "Fire It Up" emblem with flames on it. That was a sweet 'bot. We have jokingly called this years machine "The Passion of the Robot" because of the cross shape of the tetra handler. (In the words of Larry the Cable Guy: "Lord, I apologize...") Only time will tell the final nickname of the machine this year. See you all at West Michigan and in Atlanta!! |
Re: Interesting team names
Are team name is the the SPORKS. You know like a spoon and a fork combined. Are President last year came up with that. We don't know why, but it works for our team. And we have a little saying to go along with our team name, "We're not a spoon or a fork, we're a multipurpose tool."
Personally, I like team S.P.A.M.'s name, because in certain places in Canada, spam is called spork. Go Sporks and good luck to all other teams. |
Re: Interesting team names
The first robot my team built was in the 2002 season, the robots drive motors sounded like bees buzzing, so the name of the robot was bee bot, and somehow the name Robobees popped up and has since become the name of the team.

Re: Interesting team names
Team 527 (Red Dragons) name is actually quite amusing in retrospect...
The name came about as an error. Our rookie yea we decided to just keep the same name as all of the school sport teams (red devils) but through a communication error over the phone our team would up being called the red dragons. By being lazy and not realizing the mistake we stuck with the name and still go by the red dragons to this day. |
Re: Interesting team names
Code Red Robotics came from many different places. First, the "red" is because of Cornell's sports teams are called the Big Red and our high school's are teams are the Lil'(little) Red, so we thought that we should follow the trend as well. The Code Red part came from, I believe, Patrick Dingle(our founder), when we was drinking A LOT Code Red Mountain Dew. The name just sorta caught on and everyone liked it, despite the minor copyright infringement :)

Re: Interesting team names
How the heck did this thread get dug up?
Anywho... some of these names are awesome and the stories behind them make me laugh. Division by Zero is one of my favorite names, only to be beaten by their new "nickname" Division by Chicken. :D As far as the The ThunderChickens go, our story has been a long kept secret and is often the topic of our newletter scavenger hunts. So... I suppose I'd better not post it, for I'd risk having Paul put me in the chicken suit for all eternity. :yikes: |
Re: Interesting team names
Our team name is actually kind of interesting..T-Rx (aka T-rex)
Our team is made up of 3 different rival schools..when the team first originated, there was only one of the schools, Norwich High School (Their team symbol is the purple tornado). And the biggest sponsor that the team had was Proctor & Gamble Pharmeceuticals. So they combined the T from Tornado..with the Rx, meaning prescription, from the company.. After the other teams joined..there was talk about changing it..but I mean c'mon.. Who wants to be anything other than a T-Rex? ;) |

Re: Interesting team names
Kaizen is the Japanese term for continous improvement. One of our head mentors works at a company which was going through this corporate process. It begins with the realization that nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement no matter how small. It also happens over very short periods of time. He realized that this principal applied to first as well. When it came time to chose a new name becuase we became district wide instead of single school he suggested it. Over much deliberation it was chosen unanimously (something that very rarely happens). We added the "Blitz" just to make it sound cooler. Actually now that I think about it our team name means "Continous Improvement-quickly"

Re: Interesting team names
Well, in past years we were the technohaulics, but then for obvious reasons, that changed to technotics.
I think that for next year I'm going to push team GANGPLANK: Generally Awesome and Noble Gracious Professionals Looking At New Knowledge. Our robot often has a hook for one reason or another, so I figured that a pirate theme would be awesome ;). |

Re: Interesting team names
I can give you two interesting team names!
First, my high school team, 201, was called the FEDS: Falcon Engineering and Design Solutions We were originally given the name by our first sponsor, EDS. They took their name, and added an "F" for our school mascot, the Falcons, and got FEDS. Everyone liked the name so much, that when we changed sponsors, we came up with an acronym to keep using FEDS. Second, my current college team, 830, is the Rat Pack. Our school is the Huron High School River Rats... so we just made the team name off of that. Nothing too amazing, but kinda interesting. |

The Dukes
We're an all boys school in Phoenix, AZ. The Dukes conveys strength and toughness, masculinity, and royalty. "Dukes" have played some very significant roles in history and in popular culture. I didn't like the name when the team first chose it, but it has really grown on me. |

I want to hear about the Devil Duckies (1266), because I think our name (The Holy Hamsters) was inspired from being across from them in the pits at Atlanta last year. Our former names were no good. Although after reading all the posts here I think Double Doce would fit well.
I can't imagine Brophy not being the Dukes. I love hearing "DUUUUUUKES!" whenever they hit the field. |
Re: Interesting team names
the holy hamsters got their name from the devil duckies from last year? lol how funny...
well i dont know the whole story, but from what i hear....: our DaTA advisors werepassing around this site and lil devil duckie that they had found out about and they were sharing it with most of the admin. it was such a cute lil demonic thing! WHen it came time for picking the team name last year, we didnt want to be known as the Warhawks, (which is our school mascott) we wanted something more creative than that. so one of our team members piced up the lil devil duckie and said "well how about this?" and it's just stuck, lol as for the adopt a devil duckie, that came around when a member of our team ate a fortune cookie with the fortune: "you will have great success with adoption" i hope that helps ne one wanting to know, but if i find out im wrong about something, i'll edit this!!! :D |

The Wo stands for West Ottawa, our highschool but the newspapers like to call us the "wascilly wobot" and that kinda stuck after we won the WMR last year... |

Re: Interesting team names
I am suprised no one has mentioned my team - the Who'sCTEKS.
People always ask me.. "How the heck do you pronounce your name?" "Who'sCTEKS" is pronounced "HOO-SEE-TECHS". There have been variations in the spelling of the name over the years, such as "Who'sCTeks" and "Housytechs", but the phonetics of the name have remained the same. Our name is a play on words... or rather a combination of the words "Housatonic", the abbreviation for Connecticut - "CT", and "Technology". The name was modeled after that of our mentor team, the Aztechs, from Assabet High School. The nickname for our high school, Housatonic Valley Regional High School, is "Housy", so in an attempt to emulate the Aztechs (who had combined the words "Assabet" and "technology"), we made our name a combination of "Housy" and "technology". Later, the addition of the "CT" element of the name was added as an extra dimension of wordplay. From the alternate spelling "Who'sC", instead of "Housy", evolved our logo, the question mark - since the word "who" implies a question = question mark. -- Jaine |

Team 395 - 2 Train Robotics
So named because the high school students on the team take the #2 subway from their high schools in the Bronx to the mechanical engineering lab at Columbia University. Along the way they transfer to the #1 train, hence our motto, "Next stop #1!" Our robot last year was named The Spicy because of a team tradition involving the team going to the local Chinese restaurant and daring each other to eat hot peppers. This year instead of The Spicy II, we named the robot 2 Spicy (keeping the same 2 from 2 Train Robotics). |
