Having just come off inspecting at nationals, I can tell you it is what I expect to see when I look into a robot. My method varies a little from above, I have students twist the fan wires before cutting to length and terminating in ring terminals. I expect the first cut to be at least 1-2" too long so that any damage or pulled wires can be repaired. Twist the excess wire into a loop and/or tywrap. An added benefit of this method is to be able and look into the robot and see that a speed controller is getting power by seeing the fan turning on top. If the fan is not turning or is changing speed, then you can assume that primary wiring has a problem.
