Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

Greetings to all Teams

The first annual "Wonderland's FIRST Robotics Competition" will be taking place June 5-6, 2004. We will have the full playing field, scoring system and special awards. Canada's Paramount Wonderland theme park is located 30 minutes north of Toronto in Maple.

Teams will compete all day Saturday June 5 and there will be an awards ceremony in the evening. The registration cost is $250 CAN and the cheque is to be made payable to "FIRST Canadian Regional".

All people attending must purchase a $25 ticket with Wonderland. This will allow you to attend the competition and give you entrance into Canada's Wonderland on BOTH June 5 and 6 to use the rides and attend the shows. Teams will deal directly with Canada's Wonderland to purchase the $25 tickets (please use linked form below) Team members may attend as well as any other students/teachers from the school, relatives etc.. It is really a great deal. The Wonderland ticket alone for two days would normally retail for approx. $100.

I will be taking the first 32 teams that I recieve the $250 cheque from. Please courier your check to me at the address below or deliver it to me directly in Atlanta. If you can't find me, please give the registration fee to someone from Team 188 in their pit. Wonderland will be promoting this event on their website and we expect many people to enter from the park to watch. Kingswood theatre holds 6000 people so let's fill the place !

I look forward to hearing from many teams soon so please send in your registration fee ASAP. Please deal directly with Wonderland using the form attached to purchase the number of individual tickets that you will need.

Here is the link for the Wonderland order form to purchase individual tickets

How many teams are currently registered? Also, are any American teams coming?

Haha, for me that's an 8 hour drive, traversing basically the entire states of MA and upstate NY. Though I would love to come, Ive never had a competition near my birthday :)

Mark Breadner 13-04-2004 10:24

Re: Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

We currently have about 10 teams registered and I am anticipating that lots of our friends from south of the border will bring their teams. Every team is more than welcome to come and enjoy the event.

people have been telling me that this competition was cancelled...?!

J Flex 188 13-04-2004 16:22

Re: Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

definitely not.. it was cancelled due to a purported lack of interest from teams in canada, and cheques were re-distrubuted to teams at CR, but due to overwhelming demand, Mr B has decided to put this back on, and Canada's Wonderland is extremely enthusastic about getting this event running. So come one come all =D

Re: Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

We're gathering the troops to see who would like to make the trip and so far it looks like there's plenty of team interest, so look for Team 190 to make the trek to Canada for this event.

We heard only great things about the regional in Toronto and look forward to a great off-season event!

Karthik 13-04-2004 18:12

Re: Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

Team 1114 will most definitely be there. We'd love it all of our American friends could come and join us in what will be a great event. I'm already excited about the whole thing.

Trust me, you'll be kicking yourselves if you miss it.

Sha... it's definitly worth it for only a $250 entrance fee and then the $25 admission... Wonderland is DEFINITLY going to be a "FUN" event! Now if only we can make sure our team members are cheering for our matches instead of waiting in line for Top Gun... :D

And just so I'm sure on this, the $25 offer can be extended to my relatives? What about my two bosses from work (who are potential next-year sponsors)? I wonder if I could convince the admissions employees that my Czech bosses are relatives of my Scottish/Irish decent...

Team 85 from Zeeland, MI is interested. We need more information. Do you have a web site or can you e-mail more information? We have never gone international before so we will need some advice :)

Thanks

Re: Canada's Wonderland FIRST event in June

You can email me but better to email Mark Breadner. All of his info is foundn at http://www.firstcanadianregional.org . On the top right of the page, just to the left of the FIRST logo, you will see contacts. From there you will find what you need. There is also a scolling window that if you click on will give some more info. New info will be posted in the forum section.

Hope to see you there. We are expecting to have a great time with a chance to spend more time making friendships than we get at most regionals. This will be our 1st off season event and if it is half as good as our regional was then we will have the best off season event as well.

P.S. - No offence is meant to the other great off season events. :)

Team 48 hasn't ruled this event out, but we've got to discuss it amongst the tribal elders first. No promises...yet.

Man... am I excited... this is going to be the best off-season event EVER.

I mean, this is like having a competition at Cedar Point - and not only that, you get admission to the park for TWO days at a super-cut-rate price!!!

EVERY TEAM within reasonable distance HAS to get in on this one.

You'd be crazy not to!

Just 5 1/2 weeks till Canada's Wonderland FIRST Invitational. Still spots open for this inaugural event. You just don't want to miss this. Make sure that you sign up for great competition, new and renewed friendships, rides and MUCHO FUN. For those that need a little extra incentive, the rumour out there is that Karthik will be making his debut appearance as MC for this event. Come watch and laff as he stumbles over himself trying to out Dave Dave Verbrugge. :)

If it helps, the competition is on Saturday June 5 and will be completed late Saturday. The sunday is more for Canada's Wonderland theme park rides and fellowship.

Well, I guarantee you I won't be trying to out do Dave Verbrugge. There's no point setting unrealistic goals. As for the stumbling over myself, that's pretty much a given. Considering my normal energy level, expect to see me trip over field barriers more than a few times as I run off the field.

It's going to be a great show.

It's great to hear that WPI will be joining us. Now let's see if we can get any of their compatriots to join them. The weather will be warm, rides will be fun and the event will be unmatched. C'mon on up, it'll be a blast. There are still spots left.

8 hour drive isn't that long jessica! I mean, IRI is 11 at shortest for me, and this will be my second time making the trip. I'd LOVE to go to the wonderland event, but the only way I can is if someone a) can give me a ride and b) i can crash in someone's room for the night or something. OR shyra can use that money order for not coming to nationals and buy me a plane ticket! oh the possibilities! :D if anyone knows of a cheap way or someone from jersey going up lemme know asap!

Disregarding the fact that the school does not usually allow "field trips" in June, Code Red will be unable to attend due to the desire to hoard as much money as possible for next year, which we are short of at the moment. Sorry. I wish we could attend.

thats unfortunate for both 48 and 639, i would have loved to have seen a mini rematch of Canada. im surprised no one has mentioned SAT's being on that same day too. personally im going to be missing out for the morning and early afternoon portion because of the, but ill be around for saturday afternoon and all day sunday =).

honestly, if you have just a hint of love for canada, you gotta make it up to this event. Wonderland is billing itself as the largest collection of rides and amusements (or something of that like) in north america now!. how that beats out disney or six flags, i have no idea. but come and see for yourself!

Has your group worked out any deals for hotels in the area? We are currently looking to make reservations and I wanted to check before I went forward with anything. Basically I've been using hotel info off the Paramount website to find nearby hotels.

If anyone knows of which hotels are good (and not so good!) and could let us know, that would be great! We can't wait for this event!

Oh man... keep those teams coming!!!

Less than a month away, you DON'T want to miss this one.

Also rumour has it, there might be a skills competition at this event...

So all you teams that claim to have:

a) the robot that hangs the fastest
b) the robot that drives the fastest
c) the best human player
d) the robot that scores the most points

BE READY TO PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS :yikes:

PS - Can someone send me the link directly to the wonderland website? My dad just built this new computer..and for fear of suffering his wrath should anything happen to it...I 'm refraining from downlaoding anything onto it..including Java..so I can't get the link from the Canadian Regional Website.

I would have loved to go, but as Yan said, we are short on money and are trying to conserve it. I'm pretty sure that we should be away to go next year, provided that you guys still have it next year.

This event is almost MAXXED out!

There is a limit of 24 teams for Wonderland. There are 22 teams already registered!

Come get yours, because I got mine :D

Come for the competition, prove yourselves in the Skill Competition, and stick around for the best theme park this side of the border.

All at a price you can't beat!

We are looking at hotels for Canada's Wonderland and are wondering where other teams are staying.

I believe that earier in this thread, one of the teams said that they are staying near the airport. They said 15 - 20 min away and best rates.

Our team is still trying to rise some money for this. We ran out of funds after the season. So hopefully we will make it.
