Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
I dont care what people say...some people liked him and some people didnt. I liked him he came from thursday not knowing much about the game to getting into it and even very disappointed when Newton got knocked out. Sir Charles did a awesome job and i have alot of respect for him from his great performance this weekend

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
OMG! That guy was so funny! I loved PAW's 710...Baby sign. On a serious note though, I have so much respect for anyone who is willing to volunteer. I have even more respect for someone willing to put themselves out there and risk public embarrasment. He tried hard and I'll tell you one thing now, he had me laughing the whole time. I have just one thing to say to him if he's on the forums. Thank you so much, you were great!

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Yea Sir Charles was awesome, the vast improvement from Thursday to Saturday was great. The one thing i remember most is in the eliminations how much he got into it and got many teams in the stands on their feet cheering on there teams..Yea some people may not like his style...but to me he was great baby!!holllaaa!!!

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Sir Charles was great, although he didnt kno much about the game at first he started to really get into it durin the last matches. Some ppl may have gotten tired of all the "its hook up time baby....baby...heloooo" but it just added more excitement to the matches.

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
"There are now 180 POSSIBILITIES on the field!"
That guy was awesome. I liked his announcing. I was very amused when Gary Dillard (from 180) and I bearhugged him when he went into the crowd during finals. Very good times. I hope he sticks with the program and comes back to volunteer next year. |

" Let's get it certified! Let's Get it certified! "
" Ohh Baby Its been Certified! " " I got you baby.. I got you " " Show me your number so I can get you a shout out " He may have been a bit annoying on the webcast.. but in stadium he was truely amasing. He got the crowd going and they never quieted down. I have never seen soo much love for an announcer from any field at any competition. ( 4 years of nats and regionals ) When you were on the field he would pump you up and get your addrenaline flowing. He was one of my favorite announcers. |

It'd be great if he came back, but y'all might have scared him a little with that hug. The full Mike can be a bit intimidating... One of my favorites would have to be the fact that he started refering to the drivers as "special teams." well, y'all are a little bit special. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
I had the pleasure of walking around the dome a few times with him Wednesday before the volunteer check-in. He is a very nice guy, excited about FIRST .. (everything, really). I had a good time, and all we were doing was walking around looking for an entrance. Too bad I missed his announcing :(

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
i didnt see him in the field actually bc i was in archimedes, but the videos i saw in that division and the most thing he said that i loved is "theyre goin for da hook up baby!"
|
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Someone one our team actually started keeping a tally of how many times he said his phrases like "Going for the hook up", and I think in a span of 3 or 4 matches he said baby 37 times :) I personally thought he was great, it's a lot better to have an enthusiastic announcer that gets the crowd pumped. I don't think I'll ever be able to say "raising the bar" again without thinking of his announcing, which is a good thing :]

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
"Is it certified baby, O its verified Baby."
"Its not over till its over, O its over baby" I liked him even though he was a BIT repeditive he was funnie and energetic. He kept people awake at least. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Sir Charles, Amanda Morrison, Brandon Martus and I spent about an hr or so trying to find a way around the Georgia Dome Wednesday afternoon trying to find a place to get the volunteers in. At first I thought he was giving us the tour, but later I found out he was giving the tour while touring himself :p
Anyway, he's a cool guy and hilarious! |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
this guy was great.... the first day i didnt know what to think, but come saturday i couldnt get enough. i actually counted him saying baby 9 times in one match... but i was only able to watch a few. did anybody count him saying baby more than 9???

While I didn't stop by to watch a match at the dome, Sir Charles was the announcer at the peachtree regionals as well and was great there. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
yeah he was cool!!! the bear hugging was def. funny-- and now on S.P.A.M. the joke is everythign ends with a baby-- so it's all good baby! hope he's back next year-- it is cool to have fun annoucers not boring ones obviously

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Select members of my team could only speak using words that had come from his mouth. I think that Sir Charles will be one person that we remember for YEARS to come.
This is a programmers dream! IN THE A-T-L BABY! HELLO!!! You know that that means! Hello! |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
adding to what ryan said...i think we got 64 "baby"'s in 4 matches...that's 16 a match. i loved him.
|
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
You know, at first I kind of got irritated by the repetativeness (HELLO!), but then it really started to grow on me. But I didn't realize how much he really motivated the crowd until I went to the other three stages and witnessed how dry they seemed... After that, I really really really dug his announcing. HELLO! WELCOME TO THE A-T-L BABY!
He did get compliments from Dave Lavery, TechTV, CNN, and many others, too. I was hoping they would have asked him to do Einstein, because he was that awesome, but they didn't. Oh yeah, and I'm the guy standing on the left side of the picture. I'm guessing it was taken during the Newton finals. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
I really loved his announcing. Jim (an engineer on my team) and I had contests in the stands; we each pick a certain word or phrase Sir Charles said alot ("HELLO!", "Baby!", "Going for the Hang!", "All about it!") and count how many times he said it in a match, and the person with the most won. It was great! :D
I hope that Sir Charles will emcee next year if Dave Verbrugge can't do it. (seeing as how I'm a little biased to want Dave to do it.) -Pat McCarthy HOT Team Webmaster |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
I have to say that I enjoyed hearing Sir Charles announce, but I did only hear him a couple of matches at a time and noticed he was a bit repetitive. Here is some observations and opinions coming from a fellow announcer:
1. Outstanding energy. I thought I was energetic .. he makes me look like I'm half asleep. 2. His knowledge of the game was lacking at first, but it got better by Saturday. He should have done a little more research beforehand. 3. The "Raising the Bar" phrase was actually supposed to be said a lot (maybe not as much as he said it). In announcer training (yes, there is announcer and MC training), we were told to use "raising the bar" during the competitions. 4. His way to get the crowd into it during elims was awesome! I am actually going to use some of his stuff at Great Lakes next year. 5. O.K. Here is my biggest critique: his repetitiveness was distracting from the game. As announcers, our job is to keep the game exciting while keeping the focus on the game. He had many of us counting how many he times he said certain words (I was counting "hellooo") and that is distracting our attention away from the game. Often, in public speaking the person doing the speaking doesn't realize how much repeating is actually happening. I think if Sir Charles sat down and watched some of his matches, he would see this habit and adjust accordingly. In conclusion, I think he did a great job and hope to see him announce in the future. And Sir Charles, if you are reading these forums ... thank-you for volunteering your time to this great program. -Paul |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Welcome to Atlanta Baby, then there is "robot mugging" he said it only 2 but it was funny. Everyone on Newton Check out my picture yet. It is too funny.

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
i am glad to hear that most people liked Charles.
i, on the other hand, seldom like loud noises. the visual competition is enough for me. but, i am from another generation. so i will continue to try to adapt. Jerry W |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
That guy was awesome!!! I was watchin the webcast all saturday, and the stuff he was saying was hilarious..."goin for da hook up baby, raisin tha bar" Classic...

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
Dear, LORD, I must be the only one that absolutely COULD NOT stand this guy. He was still saying "WELCOME TO THE GEORGIA DOME BABY" on Saturday. I had been in Atlanta since Noon on Wednesday. I had been spending almost every waking moment in the dome. There was no need to welcome me at that point. I had been welcomed. Thursday morning uncrating, I was welcomed.
Sure he had energy, but I was so utterly annoyed by the constant 'hullo!'s, 'baby!'s, and "he's goin' fa' da' hook up!". I honestly wanted to stab myself. Yes, stab myself with a spoon. And the phrase "There are no 180 possibilties on the field" is just dumb. I hated it. I'm sorry, but I honestly couldn't stand him. You all liked him, I know, but I, and most of my team, couldn't stand him. The announcer at my regional (BAE, New Hampshire) was MUCH better. He was the guy that was on the Newton feild, pointing out each team, and always counting down "3, 2, 1, GOOOO!" He was awesome at BAE, and I was dissapointed that Charles was doing it instead of him. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
correct me if i am wrong, but it sounded familiar to the guy who did the buckeye regioanl. was he the same guy?

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
For those of us that weren't at Nationals...would someone mind typing up his story? I'm curious... :)
It sounds to me like (a) it was his first time announcing and (b) that he was liked by the majority of people there, but I'm not sure if that's right or not. |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
as one of the drivers i really liked him, but alot of the people on my team got annoyed with him saying "baby" so much (one who got particularly annoyed with him was dubbed 'baby G' by our team) My favorite phrase he kept saying was "laundry basket" reffering to the catchers. "talk about no laundry today, that basket is EMPTAY!" :D

Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
He was absolutely 100% not the same announcer from Buckeye. I don't know who it was at Buckeye, but it wasn't Sir Charles.
It was the announcer at buckeye's first FIRST announcing job, and it was Sir Charles' first FIRST announcing job, i remember that distinctly from both events. -Pat McCarthy HOT Team Webmaster |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
...."This match is over, baby!"
Sorry, couldn't resist. ............Hello!!!! (sorry again) He was only half-annoying to me. There were some people that felt we had bad luck getting placed in the Newton field with this guy, and I gotta admit, I could have used a break from him, but he did a good job. There are times when I would have wanted a less....predictable....announcer, but there were times when he gave it a lot of energy. - Sharp |
Re: pic: "Welcome to the Georgia Dome Baby....Welcome to Atlanta Baby!"
I was queuing and did not hear him announce. Sir Charles is a great guy. He not only announced but he was the contact for the volunteers from all over the country before nationals. He lives in Atlanta and I spoke with him several times before I got to Atlanta. I must say Sir Charles went above and beyond for FIRST. He is one of the reasons things ran so smoothly. Thank You Charlie! :D

Team 1102 loves him.
He did Peachtree and got caught up on a couple of phrases there as well. Our team liked them as they sort of became a trademark like "Baby". I recall he said "in the house" and "look out" a lot at Peachtree. As I watched our matches again on video, he was quite reserved until Saturday, perhaps trying to save his voice. He knows the game; he did 100+ matches at Peachtree. At Peachtree I happened to ride up the escalator with him before I knew who he was. He hoarsely said "I'm the announcer". I thanked him for volunteering and he was truly greatful that we liked him. I recall he said he is not a professional announcer. If you want I will get his quotes from Peachtree and write them down for you. He deserves a medal. At the Championships I hoped they would do a Mosh Pit when he came up in the stands. Before anyone wants to be critical, think about whether you sat there and watched every match, much less called them in front of 6000 people. www.maikenmagic.com |
