Team 547 Rage was the most spirited group on Newton. And they were treated so badly by surrounding teams I felt terrible for them. It's one thing if you don't want to cheer but don't go spreading your cancer of misery to others who just want to have fun.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

Sadly I wasnt able to expierience the nats cheering this year(although at times i was only 3 minutes away at the CNN center). But the sad part is I didnt get to miss having my eyes burned out by the incredibly bright MOE shirts, j/k. Anyway, there are a few REALLY spirited teams that tend to stick out. MOE, obviously, the killer bees had people taking the shirts off to reveal K I L L E R B E E S on their chests at VCU, and several others. My team didnt do a whole lot until we yelled at them to start ccheering, and the elims came around. Last year(and a failed attempt at VCU) we had Richiebot though! :p (gotta love duct tape, aluminum foil, a cracked gel, and a muffin fan powered by a 9 volt battery strapped to the shortest member of the team...), and last year we had GIANT flags, which should be returning next year. And possibly a team theme thats easier to cheer for. Prepare for the return of 116 spirit!

Yes, the UTC venue has its drawbacks, but is great for inspiring teams to cheer and have spirit and decorate their areas, etc. Much better venue for that than the NJ Regional or even the Championships where it's a stadium venue.

547 is Fear. Or the Bird Brains, whatever they're calling themselves.

I don't remember them being treated badly. What happened? I know we yelled "down in front" at them a couple of times because they were all standing up and we couldn't see the field, but I hardly consider that bad treatment.

As for us, I think we're doing quite well in the area of spirit. We have some great drummers, plenty of cheers, and I'm told we got a couple of team-given spirit awards this year at nationals.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

I believe cheering at Nationals was a problem because a few teams/people did not like the fact that the playing field was blocked when people stood up to cheer. Some teams were asked to sit down and not be so...mm...loud? In general, my team was loud no matter if we were making noise or not. Other teams were doing a great job of cheering too but I forget their numbers.

ok, so i wrote this HUUUGGGEEEE, long reply about team spirit, but then it said i wasn't signed in, which i was, so being the lazy bum that i am, i'll just summarize, in various versions of the Shiny viv formula

Spirit. Spirit is awesome. Horay for spirit.
GRT. GRT is in California. I want to move there and take MOE along. :D
Octopus. Octopus is perfectly crazily awesome. I love Octopus.

and for everyone who did the "various name dance" with us, continue to spread it(you know, the dance with the punching)

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

Our team is one of the least sprited teams involved in FIRST. My friend, Abby, had to scream at the rest of the lazy bones in the stands to cheer. I think next year we'll bring along some cheerleaders. I don't think anyone knows we exist. Our team number is 1140 NOT 1040. LOL long story.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

for my team, it's hard. a lot of my teammates are hardly spirited. I mean, they love FIRST, it's just at competitions, they're dead. This year, it was a bit..different. My team was actually cheering. Haha, and this year we had blue and black pompoms, to match our colors. I was mad we didn't have white, since it was 007. But oh well...=P aside from that..
We used to be like..the least spirited team at competitions. Even at NJ this year...my team was DEAD. No lie...they all propped their feet on the chairs. xD I found it somewhat funny. *shrug* I'm hoping we can change that next year.

<hint#1> Give them all quad-shots of espresso in a caramel frappucino. </hint#1>

Heh.. That sure worked for us this year, I'm serious, too. It doesn't wear away like sugar, although sugar is always good as well. And mad props to Red Bull.

<hint#2> Do a cheer that requires everyone to answer back. </hint#2>

Sarah and I did that this year when we noticed that no one was cheering. They had no choice but to answer.. We lost our voices by the second day, but that didn't really stop us so everyone started piping in because it just became too painful to listen to us at that point :p

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

This would be from Palmetto.

Good: 21/180. Those two teams were loud, raucous, and loving it. 21 didn't get picked, although I remember 180 being picked and doing alright.

Bad (in the Micheal Jackson sense): 1398. Sure, they're rookies, but these kids were screaming halfway across the Colonial Center and were being about as loud where we sat as 180, who was right by us. They were all-stars for sure.

Ugly: 1293. It took a miracle to get our kids to cheer for our own matches. I see that next season we're going to have to do something. (And given that the Palmetto Regional is so close to our schools, there's nothing like a threat of going back to class, eh?)

As for down in frontness, here's my take: If it's your match, get up, be loud, go hoarse. Otherwise, sit down, be loud, get hoarse. Problem solved.

Just thought I would chime in-

My team does not really cheer; the kids on the team just aren’t the type of kids who cheer a lot. We have tons of team spirit and everything, cheering is just not our thing.

I don’t really know if I could stand being on a team who cheers, so much noise!

Just my 2cents

my team does chear when our bot is up, but thats about the only time, we dont chear much any other time (I am guilty of that too :o ) maybe we can have more spirit this season.
Also apparently before my time we used to bring chearleaders and the school band, that must have been some spectacle.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

my team brought anything that could fit 769 in big white glittery numbers. We brought the school mascot, an egg full of candy, little whistle-like things (not as loud as a whistle), and basically cheered during all of our matches, even when the bot was lying on its side or breaking down ( which was all but 20 sec in all the matches combined). It's hard to cheer for your bot when you know its crap and will break down.
