Re: Smells like Team Spirit
this year weve already been to our 2 regionals.... st louis which we had all 30 students of ours there and we got the spirit award which was awesome. becuase we were the loudest team there... and in chicago we were still one of the loudest teams there with only 14 of our student members there and only 6 down in the stands screaming because of our drivers and our scouting people not screaming. but we didnt win the spirit award from first but we did win it from wildstang.

DaimlerChrysler - Team Spirit - This award celebrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit through exceptional partnership and teamwork. It should be awarded to the team who has reflected these qualities throughout the season, not just at a competition. So for several years I was misinformed, and I wonder how many judges also thought the same thing. |
Re: Smells like Team Spirit
My team didn't cheer at all. Mainly cause our robot completely sucked, but w/e. And I'm mad that you stole the title from nirvana. Its Smells Like Teen Spirit, which is the best song ever, so there.

Much to our surprise they gave it to 808 who had won it because they wore colorful costumes and brought in a busload of kids. We we're disappionted but held our head up high and we're rewarded with the Sportsmanship award the next day. |

we've just got to remember, Imagry and Spirit are not neccessarily the same thing, although they do tend to go hand in hand. :] and even if you think your team is too small, or if your robot is doing "badly" (the only way to have a robot do "badly" is if it doesnt even exist! a robot cannot do "badly" if you spend 6 weeks on it, if it sits on the field, if it runs, if it can play defense, if it can contain even one tetra, or if it can if it can stack! that is SOMETHING, and it is most certainly better than NOTHING!!) you can still cheer not only for your own team, but for everyone in general! Everyone present has had their lives touched by FIRST and has spent 6 weeks on building a robot, or working on an animation, or putting together a chairman's award sumbission, or helping their team out in some way. Everyone has been through up and downs just like you have, so why skip out on cheering for yourself, your friends, your alliance, your opposition, for the volunteers, the guest speakers, for everyone? You can cheer and be happy and act like an "idiot" in your mind and just have fun! Chances are, although you might feel stupid at first, dont let it get to you. if you're out of state, dont worry, no one knows you there. if you're in state, its okay, we'll get to know you and love you for not caring about what other people think, and just having a great time. :) you shouldnt be yelled at to turn off your GameBoy and show some enthusiasm, you should be happy to be there, happy to show support for your drivers, your mentors, your team, happy to miss school, visit somewhere new (or return to a familiar place filled with wonderful memories), or just plain happy to be with your friends, new and old. one shouldnt cheer just to get a spirit award. one should cheer because they are truly happy to be there and show off 6 weeks of hard work, dedication, and blood, sweat, and tears. :) |

We had so much fun cheering at Chesapeake - we work hard all year long to get to go to a regional event and be with other people just like us - plus, like I tell the students on my team, this is my VACATION so you'd better make it fun for me! LOL :D |
Re: Smells like Team Spirit
Yeah cheering is so much fun! Our team cheered so much in San Jose we won 3 spirit awards. We one 2 from other teams (cheesy poofsand team 22) and the other from FIRST. it was really cool. It's fun cheering even for other teams, they get more in to it and it makes the competition better for everyone. We gave it our all, we danced, sang, and cheered our hearts out. it was really cool when they played the eye of the tiger, we started singing the starbucks commercial version. Roy...roy,roy,roy...roy,roy,roy...lol
so keep chering everybody!!! |

and now on for my two cents... I hate how my team does not like to cheer. me and leslie and a few other people get up and dance and we look so stupid! but it doesnt matter! its fun! i yell at people for listening to music i tell them to dance. they say they cant cheer because they lost their voice! so?! i lose my voice all the time.. you know what i do? i pretend to cheer lol. I just look like im cheering when nothing is coming out! or i dance or i get people dancing or we find people to play games. there are so many things to do to have spirit and mny people think the pink team has a ton of spirit. we have a lot of spirit with a few kids. when at competition if you see 20 kids dancing and 30 sitting, it's not cool. it looks horrible. they should want to be there, especially if it's out of state. these people are supposedly more involved with the team. it makes me mad that they don't want to cheer for their own team! |
Re: Smells like Team Spirit
If anybody was down at the FL regional they would of seen team 61 yelling and yelling all day both Friday and Saturday. We do this not for the Spirit award because we do inform our kids that the spirit award is something different then just yelling.
They were yelling because it was snowing at home and it was 70 degree down in Florida. They not only cheer for our team they made a effort to cheers for any other team that wanted them to cheer. This is the least they can do when they come on a trip. We had 48 kids on this trip and 3 teacher two mother. all but the pit people where standing and cheering all day. this just make the competition for everybody that much more lively |
Re: Smells like Team Spirit
How cool would it be to get all the people who like to cheer together in Atlanta to do a big group cheer??? Can you imagine what it would sound like???
Or have one field's participants challenge the other 3 fields to cheer louder? :ahh: |

Re: Smells like Team Spirit
When I voulenteered at the UTC regional, I hosted a man who worked with MIT, his son, and a foreign exchange student that they were hosting from Japan. I brought them around the pits, and they were amazed by all the robots, but when I went and sat them down to watch the matches they were even more amazed. After watchinng a couple of matches, they saw a group of people from Gael Force down by the stage cheering and he asked why they were so excited becuase their team wasn't up, and the son replied "Dad, they're excited for eachother, and the other team is small, so they're helping them out." It's always an interesting experience to bring non-FIRST people into the competitions, most of the time they're overwhelemed by the amount of energy, and the creativity of how people built their robots.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit
Would cheerleaders do the trick for a small team? :)
|
Re: Smells like Team Spirit
Well... Let me tell you about me, I used to be a cheerleader, then I joined robotics. So I know the cheers, I know the spirit.
Basically I am nuts! haha, I dance around and lead "copy-cat" cheers. I keep dancing and keep my energy up. I find that keeps the rest of the team going. Sometimes they don't respond, but you just have to be like "just have fun." I have a blast. So find someone who is outgoing, loud, energetic and loves to dance.. I'm sure they could get your team going! And everyone seems to love cheerleaders. Convince them that robotics isnt a nerd team! lol If any one needs anything private message me. |
