Smells like Team Spirit

This year I have seen many spirited teams, using various devices to cheer their team on (though I haven't seen an 80" LCD showing cheers). Post some teams that are known for cheering, and how well they did, and what teams should do to cheer.

GO FIRST!!

GO FIRST!!

Bring along 12 busloads full of kids from your school to a regional and the spirit award is practically handed to you! Make them interested in FIRST...make them have fun :)

I'll post two from Gali-leo!: MOE and Ramtech. They just show up to cheer. Yes MOE has their wobblies but other than that they both just get up have fun make noise and dance. Ramtech does the same except no wobblies.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

We discovered the wobblies by accident when we were playing around with the scraps of material from our side panels. :D

We have two main people on our team who lead us in dancing, Bernie who is a student and Tom who is a mentor.

Wow I can't believe that team 192 GRT slipped my mind because them and the RamTechs were keepin up with us the whole time. :D

Yes, but exactly just HOW did you get that many people interested in your team? That's what we really need to know.

And how exactly do you motivate your students to be engaged in the cheering and spirit? We struggle with this!

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

A good amout of the students just naturally like to dance and have fun and it's hard not to when ur wearin bright green and have green hair. More than half of the mentores get up on their own and just start dancin too. I guess it's mainly because were so serious during the build season that when were at comps. we just want to have fun and do well. And plus, we're already sticking out like a sore thumb because we're wearing quite possibly the brightes shade of green you can get, so its not like were gonna draw much more attention. :D

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

In the Chapionships our team (810) started the HEYYY cheer which orginated back in build season. The cheer is where eveyrone randomly yells out HEYYYYYY. A bunch of teams caught on to it and when they saw our team they would HEYYY at us and we would HEYYY back. We attempted to get the entire pits, or at least our Curie division to join in the cheer by having our robot pull our cart around the pits with people on it cheering. It didn't work to well, but at least we made the Championship video at the adward ceremony.

Oh and another thing if anyone saw people offering free hugs, a memeber of our team also started that one on the first day of championships.

my team had less then 6 people at all times in the crowd at least student wise but we did alot of chairs, painted our faces, danced around a bit, and scouted every single match in the process, we have some improvements but we got into a HEALLOOOO screaming fight with Sir Charles which was the best, but i lost my voice so it was weak on Saturday. But this was a really fun trip and we are still stuck in Spirit Mode

MOE and GRT where definitely spirited some of my team ended up dancing with them when they were still dancing at the wrap party.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

461 WAS the spirit team at one point. When I was a freshman, there were a lot of laid back advisors on PR, and they invented stuff such as "Let's go Red", "Let's go Blue", and our trademark "Let's all Go Nuts...Robots!! Robots!!"

Even into last year, the X-Cats won the spirit award in Chicago, but we won their team spirit award. That was also the year that one motivated, extremely spirited member of our team graduated. (He was so spirited, he probably could have beaten any of the announcers in spirit)

This year, people didn't want to cheer, and that wasn't cool. Only a few of the returning members knew how to cheer (although some rookies were also pretty good)

Seriously, it is the job of the stands to cheer for robots! not only their team or friendly teams, ALL ROBOTS!!!

You tell them its fun, its free, theres gonna be 400 other people coming, you get to miss a day of school and you get free team T-Shirts! Team members tell their friends to come and they tell their friends to come and the list goes on. Spread the word about robotics throughout the school and people will want to know what it is, how it works and what teams do. Trust me students like to be there cheering for their team.
O By the way, you HAVE to tell them that your robot is great...otherwise they won't really bother hehe :)

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

My team isn't great about cheering, but I know at last year's UTC, I would go out and stand in front of the stage, jumping up and down, screaming until it felt like my throat would bleed. I lost my voice every night, but regained it in the morning. Although, when I became part of the drive team this year, I was doing all of my cheering when we were introduced and that was it. My team cheered at SPBLI and Nat's on the Saturdays a lot, though. I wish we had as much spirit as MOE. :)

Team 547 Rage was the most spirited group on Newton. And they were treated so badly by surrounding teams I felt terrible for them. It's one thing if you don't want to cheer but don't go spreading your cancer of misery to others who just want to have fun.

Sadly I wasnt able to expierience the nats cheering this year(although at times i was only 3 minutes away at the CNN center). But the sad part is I didnt get to miss having my eyes burned out by the incredibly bright MOE shirts, j/k. Anyway, there are a few REALLY spirited teams that tend to stick out. MOE, obviously, the killer bees had people taking the shirts off to reveal K I L L E R B E E S on their chests at VCU, and several others. My team didnt do a whole lot until we yelled at them to start ccheering, and the elims came around. Last year(and a failed attempt at VCU) we had Richiebot though! :p (gotta love duct tape, aluminum foil, a cracked gel, and a muffin fan powered by a 9 volt battery strapped to the shortest member of the team...), and last year we had GIANT flags, which should be returning next year. And possibly a team theme thats easier to cheer for. Prepare for the return of 116 spirit!

Yes, the UTC venue has its drawbacks, but is great for inspiring teams to cheer and have spirit and decorate their areas, etc. Much better venue for that than the NJ Regional or even the Championships where it's a stadium venue.

547 is Fear. Or the Bird Brains, whatever they're calling themselves.

I don't remember them being treated badly. What happened? I know we yelled "down in front" at them a couple of times because they were all standing up and we couldn't see the field, but I hardly consider that bad treatment.

As for us, I think we're doing quite well in the area of spirit. We have some great drummers, plenty of cheers, and I'm told we got a couple of team-given spirit awards this year at nationals.

Brm789 22-04-2004 15:43

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

I believe cheering at Nationals was a problem because a few teams/people did not like the fact that the playing field was blocked when people stood up to cheer. Some teams were asked to sit down and not be so...mm...loud? In general, my team was loud no matter if we were making noise or not. Other teams were doing a great job of cheering too but I forget their numbers.

ok, so i wrote this HUUUGGGEEEE, long reply about team spirit, but then it said i wasn't signed in, which i was, so being the lazy bum that i am, i'll just summarize, in various versions of the Shiny viv formula

Spirit. Spirit is awesome. Horay for spirit.
GRT. GRT is in California. I want to move there and take MOE along. :D
Octopus. Octopus is perfectly crazily awesome. I love Octopus.

and for everyone who did the "various name dance" with us, continue to spread it(you know, the dance with the punching)

Our team is one of the least sprited teams involved in FIRST. My friend, Abby, had to scream at the rest of the lazy bones in the stands to cheer. I think next year we'll bring along some cheerleaders. I don't think anyone knows we exist. Our team number is 1140 NOT 1040. LOL long story.

Dorienne 05-07-2004 19:36

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

for my team, it's hard. a lot of my teammates are hardly spirited. I mean, they love FIRST, it's just at competitions, they're dead. This year, it was a bit..different. My team was actually cheering. Haha, and this year we had blue and black pompoms, to match our colors. I was mad we didn't have white, since it was 007. But oh well...=P aside from that..
We used to be like..the least spirited team at competitions. Even at NJ this year...my team was DEAD. No lie...they all propped their feet on the chairs. xD I found it somewhat funny. *shrug* I'm hoping we can change that next year.

<hint#1> Give them all quad-shots of espresso in a caramel frappucino. </hint#1>

Heh.. That sure worked for us this year, I'm serious, too. It doesn't wear away like sugar, although sugar is always good as well. And mad props to Red Bull.

<hint#2> Do a cheer that requires everyone to answer back. </hint#2>

Sarah and I did that this year when we noticed that no one was cheering. They had no choice but to answer.. We lost our voices by the second day, but that didn't really stop us so everyone started piping in because it just became too painful to listen to us at that point :p

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

This would be from Palmetto.

Good: 21/180. Those two teams were loud, raucous, and loving it. 21 didn't get picked, although I remember 180 being picked and doing alright.

Bad (in the Micheal Jackson sense): 1398. Sure, they're rookies, but these kids were screaming halfway across the Colonial Center and were being about as loud where we sat as 180, who was right by us. They were all-stars for sure.

Ugly: 1293. It took a miracle to get our kids to cheer for our own matches. I see that next season we're going to have to do something. (And given that the Palmetto Regional is so close to our schools, there's nothing like a threat of going back to class, eh?)

As for down in frontness, here's my take: If it's your match, get up, be loud, go hoarse. Otherwise, sit down, be loud, get hoarse. Problem solved.

MattK 05-07-2004 22:39

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

Just thought I would chime in-

My team does not really cheer; the kids on the team just aren’t the type of kids who cheer a lot. We have tons of team spirit and everything, cheering is just not our thing.

I don’t really know if I could stand being on a team who cheers, so much noise!

Just my 2cents

my team does chear when our bot is up, but thats about the only time, we dont chear much any other time (I am guilty of that too :o ) maybe we can have more spirit this season.
Also apparently before my time we used to bring chearleaders and the school band, that must have been some spectacle.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

my team brought anything that could fit 769 in big white glittery numbers. We brought the school mascot, an egg full of candy, little whistle-like things (not as loud as a whistle), and basically cheered during all of our matches, even when the bot was lying on its side or breaking down ( which was all but 20 sec in all the matches combined). It's hard to cheer for your bot when you know its crap and will break down.

Team Spirit is contagious on your team, so what you have to do is make things fertile for infection.

Find someone who wants to be the spirit leader - someone who the students will follow because they're slightly (or more than slightly) kookie. It's especially effective if you can get one of the "cool" people to do this, so everyone sees it's cool to be spirit crazy.

Practice a few cheers at team meetings. Add motions, simple dance moves and not just verbal cheering. Add "marginally prohibited  " rhythm instruments (we beat on coolers, totes, etc.)

Get ALL the mentors to join in. Nothing is funnier than a bunch of 40 year old engineers and 60 year old grandmas doing hip-hop moves - the students will look forward to each cheer just to see us make fools of ourselves.

Don't just cheer when you do well - cheer just for the sake of cheering.

It took us a couple years to build up, but it's worth it - we definitely have more fun at competitions.

I loved the heatwave band - we were putting a band together in 2003 when they came out with the "no live band" rule. I disagree with that rule - I think the live bands did more good than harm in contibuting to the atmosphere.

I was in awed of the spirit of SPAM. All the students were doing the insanely silly SPAM cheer, and then I turned around and saw that the parents and mentors were doing it too! :yikes:

The members of my team have little spirit themselves, they whined about yelling, wearing our awesome hats with ears, and even how the shirts looked. However, my team happened to have the president of the art club on our team, and she assembled a few friends to make us a chinese-dragon like bulldog. I also recruited 3 of the JV cheerleaders to come with us to the UCF Florida regional. Both seemed to be a hit and went over well. My friends said it would be impossible to get cheerleaders to come to a robotics competition. ;)

It's our teams first year and for the most part we still need to work on our team spirit. However, at the Peachtree Regional it was basically me and one of our mentor's daughter that were doing most of the cheering. The reason for this could be because our team is made up of mostly guys that are not really interested in cheering as much as they are in being around the pit. It does get little tiring to be cheering out there all alone as oposed to having the whole team cheer with you. :(
But next year is a whole new year and I expect to see a lot more team spirit from my team. I think that as we get more people and specially more girls :) we'll have a team with enough guts to cheer, so i guess we'll see.

On a scale from 1-10 on a cheering scale, 10 being the best, i would haveta rate my team a 3.5-4. My team lacked in cheering this year. Like at the awards ceremonie like 3/4 of our team didnt even stand up and cheer for the other teams. Nationals out team spirit was pretty good. but the other competetions that we had this year, wasnt too great with the team spirit. I hope that next year everyone from my team will get into it and cheer like no other haha.

My team cheered well, but during the semifinals in Newton we were told to sit down because we were blocking the field. The thing that bothered me by that is that it was our alliance partners telling us to sit down. They wouldn't even cheer for their own alliance in the semifinals.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

Personaly for me team spirit has always been one of my favorite areas of FIRST. I can remeber in 2001 when 461 went to the midwest regional, our robot was doing horrible and we were extremely downtroden during lunch on the second day. Although after a few rousing speeches, we went back in and cheered like there was no tomorrow and won our first of several spirit award.
The next year our team was able to develope several 'cheers' and became more advanced in our noise makers and what not and once again were a very loud spirited team. I still remeber 461 in binary, due to cheering it entirely to often, and when i see my old team members around i always give em a "LEts all Go NUTS!" and wait for the response of "ROBOTS! ROBOTS!"

PErsonaly i've always been very impressed with teams like Moe, and team 65, and The Thunder Chickens when it comes to spirit. Team 71 was always really into cheering for their team and alliances. Though one of my favorite experiences in the team spirit catagory has to been when many of the Indiana teams began bonding within the last few years and all cheered for each other, regardless of who was competeing. Chants of "Indy-An-A!" and cheering for indiana alliances always warmed my heart and reminded me it was all about more then robots.

I dont think the number of people cheering really has alot to do with spirit. Because spirit is more then just volume and cheering. ITs an attitude, a spirit, a drive, and a state of mind. There is something strangely gratifying about cheering so loud and so hard and believing in what your cheering for so much that you nearly cough up blood and cant talk for a week.

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

I think cheering definitely is one of the most important parts of the FIRST competitions. It makes it fun even if your robot is losing, because you can just cheer for everyone else and still have a freaking awesome time :-D.

Cheering definitely has to start with a leader. It's tough to beg people to like start cheering when they think its dumb, but if you have fun cheers that aren't super complicated, people will join in when they see how much fun you are having. If you come up with fun cheers that you can catch on to easily and are kinda kookie. You can collaborate with others teams also at regionals and nationals to make it even louder and more fun.

Another thing I noticed helps with cheering thats not even under your control is the regional/national facility. If it is like kinda small so its totally packed like it was at the Wayne State University for Detroit, then it makes is like 10X more fun! Everyone gets so excited and when you have like mass cheers it echos through the place and you can hear the cheers better. Its hard to cheer in Ipsylanti because teams are super far apart and you are like shouting out into nothing (or a big huge open space) :ahh: So it makes it more fun to cheer if you are in a packed small arena.

Thats my 2 cents on what makes cheering extra fun. Its one of my favorite parts of regionals. Cheer on guys! (and dont forget to cheer WITH other teams, its super fun)

I used to think that the Daimler Chrysler Team Spirit award was given to the team that demonstrated the most spirit at a competition - the loudest cheering, or was cheering for everyone for three days... Since in my experience those teams always received the award. And then I attended a competition where it was given to a team that was not the loudest and did not cheer for days on end... so I went back and re-read the description...

DaimlerChrysler - Team Spirit - This award celebrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit through exceptional partnership and teamwork. It should be awarded to the team who has reflected these qualities throughout the season, not just at a competition. So for several years I was misinformed, and I wonder how many judges also thought the same thing.

We found that out last year at Buckeye. We had won the team spirit award the previous two years there and had won it three years in a row at regionals and it looked locked up again as we we're not only cheering up a storm but even dancing and having a Soul Train line down on the field.
Much to our surprise they gave it to 808 who had won it because they wore colorful costumes and brought in a busload of kids. We we're disappionted but held our head up high and we're rewarded with the Sportsmanship award the next day.

wow thanks for the info.. i also thought that the loudest, most enthusiastic team at the competitions won spirit. ^^; it makes sense though.. and although we had a very large amount of pink people who we tried to get to dance and sing and be enthusiastic at competitions, we didnt get that award at either Denver or UCF. i'm not complaining though!! those teams really did deserve it, and i am encredibly happy with what we get to take home.. we got four awards at Denver alone, including Imagry, which was more than enough in my eyes.

we've just got to remember, Imagry and Spirit are not neccessarily the same thing, although they do tend to go hand in hand. :] and even if you think your team is too small, or if your robot is doing "badly" (the only way to have a robot do "badly" is if it doesnt even exist! a robot cannot do "badly" if you spend 6 weeks on it, if it sits on the field, if it runs, if it can play defense, if it can contain even one tetra, or if it can if it can stack! that is SOMETHING, and it is most certainly better than NOTHING!!) you can still cheer not only for your own team, but for everyone in general! Everyone present has had their lives touched by FIRST and has spent 6 weeks on building a robot, or working on an animation, or putting together a chairman's award sumbission, or helping their team out in some way. Everyone has been through up and downs just like you have, so why skip out on cheering for yourself, your friends, your alliance, your opposition, for the volunteers, the guest speakers, for everyone? You can cheer and be happy and act like an "idiot" in your mind and just have fun! Chances are, although you might feel stupid at first, dont let it get to you. if you're out of state, dont worry, no one knows you there. if you're in state, its okay, we'll get to know you and love you for not caring about what other people think, and just having a great time. :) you shouldnt be yelled at to turn off your GameBoy and show some enthusiasm, you should be happy to be there, happy to show support for your drivers, your mentors, your team, happy to miss school, visit somewhere new (or return to a familiar place filled with wonderful memories), or just plain happy to be with your friends, new and old.

one shouldnt cheer just to get a spirit award. one should cheer because they are truly happy to be there and show off 6 weeks of hard work, dedication, and blood, sweat, and tears. :)

Yes, yes, YES!!!

We had so much fun cheering at Chesapeake - we work hard all year long to get to go to a regional event and be with other people just like us - plus, like I tell the students on my team, this is my VACATION so you'd better make it fun for me! LOL :D

Yeah cheering is so much fun! Our team cheered so much in San Jose we won 3 spirit awards. We one 2 from other teams (cheesy poofsand team 22) and the other from FIRST. it was really cool. It's fun cheering even for other teams, they get more in to it and it makes the competition better for everyone. We gave it our all, we danced, sang, and cheered our hearts out. it was really cool when they played the eye of the tiger, we started singing the starbucks commercial version. Roy...roy,roy,roy...roy,roy,roy...lol
so keep chering everybody!!!

very well said leslie...
and now on for my two cents...
I hate how my team does not like to cheer. me and leslie and a few other people get up and dance and we look so stupid! but it doesnt matter! its fun! i yell at people for listening to music i tell them to dance. they say they cant cheer because they lost their voice! so?! i lose my voice all the time.. you know what i do? i pretend to cheer lol. I just look like im cheering when nothing is coming out! or i dance or i get people dancing or we find people to play games. there are so many things to do to have spirit and mny people think the pink team has a ton of spirit. we have a lot of spirit with a few kids. when at competition if you see 20 kids dancing and 30 sitting, it's not cool. it looks horrible. they should want to be there, especially if it's out of state. these people are supposedly more involved with the team. it makes me mad that they don't want to cheer for their own team!

If anybody was down at the FL regional they would of seen team 61 yelling and yelling all day both Friday and Saturday. We do this not for the Spirit award because we do inform our kids that the spirit award is something different then just yelling.

They were yelling because it was snowing at home and it was 70 degree down in Florida. They not only cheer for our team they made a effort to cheers for any other team that wanted them to cheer. This is the least they can do when they come on a trip. We had 48 kids on this trip and 3 teacher two mother. all but the pit people where standing and cheering all day. this just make the competition for everybody that much more lively

How cool would it be to get all the people who like to cheer together in Atlanta to do a big group cheer??? Can you imagine what it would sound like???

Or have one field's participants challenge the other 3 fields to cheer louder? :ahh:

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

When I voulenteered at the UTC regional, I hosted a man who worked with MIT, his son, and a foreign exchange student that they were hosting from Japan. I brought them around the pits, and they were amazed by all the robots, but when I went and sat them down to watch the matches they were even more amazed. After watchinng a couple of matches, they saw a group of people from Gael Force down by the stage cheering and he asked why they were so excited becuase their team wasn't up, and the son replied "Dad, they're excited for eachother, and the other team is small, so they're helping them out." It's always an interesting experience to bring non-FIRST people into the competitions, most of the time they're overwhelemed by the amount of energy, and the creativity of how people built their robots.

Would cheerleaders do the trick for a small team? :)

Re: Smells like Team Spirit

Well... Let me tell you about me, I used to be a cheerleader, then I joined robotics. So I know the cheers, I know the spirit.

Basically I am nuts! haha, I dance around and lead "copy-cat" cheers. I keep dancing and keep my energy up. I find that keeps the rest of the team going. Sometimes they don't respond, but you just have to be like "just have fun." I have a blast.

So find someone who is outgoing, loud, energetic and loves to dance.. I'm sure they could get your team going!

And everyone seems to love cheerleaders. Convince them that robotics isnt a nerd team! lol

If any one needs anything private message me.

yea im from ramtech and as much as I know we cheer alot...well i dont know since its my first year at my schools team, but i do see a couple of those team spirit awards liyng around and we got this crazy "mentor" woman that keeps screarming all the time. so yea ived seen videos of them and they seem kinda cheery, havent seem other teams so i cant compare. we have a big team, in my opinion, at 40-45 so that kinda helps. I am in 2(posibly 3) sports teams for my school so i personally know how to cheer alot. well may the cheer live on...may it live on for long...hehe that rimes...

wow, way to revive a old thread...

Some may take my opinion negatively, but in my honest opinion, I believe cheering should be done purley with the human voice. Banging thing togther just to create noise is not cheering, its noise which in all honesty can sometimes get annoying. Now I'm not aiming this at a specific team or teams, I'm just saying that for the folks who do not exactly know what FIRST is all about, listening to "noise" being created is sometimes a turn off. In one competition I went to, one team in particular used thier "insturments" so loud that you could not even hear the announcer or the MC.

Just my $.02

292 used cheerleaders last year at boilermaker, though I think they've graduated by now.

Nothing says team spirit more than launching small foam objects with the team's logo on them out of an Air Cannon across the playing field into the crowd.

Or doesn't it say enough....either way, it was fun.

Ringers won't attract a spirit award.
Small teams should try getting another team to cheer with them instead.
