What can we do to stop this though? I think if the US were to get rid of many of our own WMD, then everyone would say 'but we need those'.

The same happens if you throw away an old toy that a child hasn't played with in a long time. As soon as that toy goes into the garbage the kid says 'but I played with that all the time.' When you take it out of the garbage and give it back to them, they play with it just to prove their point. Do we want that to happen with WMDs?

I know that's kind of a stretch, but something similar will happen if the US eliminated much of its arsenal. I think the WMDs are there for presentation now, rather than possible use.
