Who was the best hanger?

Who do you feel was the best hanger? Some could do it in autonomous, some could strafe on the bar, some could do it from the ground, and some could do it really fast! So who do you feel was the best, or deserves to be recognized?

Eric Yahrmatter 04-21-2004 06:00 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Yeah...330 could get up on the platform in autonomous, then hang. They could strafe across the bar and had an arm that could protect/decap the stationary goals.

Tom Bottiglieri 04-21-2004 06:01 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

I have never seen them in action ( :( ) but from what i have heard, the wpi (190) machine was very good.

As for "shimmy" bots, the best were 330 and 237, but I though 330 had a little bit of an advantage. A) They get on the platform in auto B) They Can uncap.... But, 237 had the power to stop teams from getting on the top platform with their bot-not-hanging-so-high design. If you want to see a match between these 2 hangers, check out the team 195 video gallery (link below) and watch qualifiying match number 96

Re: Who was the best hanger?

716 had a really fast hanger. They got easily on the platform and just zipped up. Also, 237 had an awesome hanger and they could strafe across and block w/ their hood.

I liked our partners in Curie finals - 66 and 279 along with thier parter in yipsi. They can hang consistently and look real good doing it too.

233 Pink.

no contest. they would defend till a few seconds and then they would hang they could not be stoped

190

Hung in atonomus!!!! and then deployed plastic shields on the bar to keep other robots from hanging

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Team 48 Delphi E.L.I.T.E.

I lost track of how many last second hangs these guys pulled out. They could play defense for a good 1:40, then go to hang and make it with time to spare. They knew exactly where to position their robot and arm to minimize the time it took to complete the maneuver. They turned hanging into an art form.

The winches employed by teams 60, 67 and 254 were also great to watch as well. These floor hangers were very hard to defend. I was shocked to see how quickly these teams managed to get themselves off the ground via a winch. It took some smart engineering to make this happen.

Re: Who was the best hanger?

While there were a lot of good hangers, my vote has to go to 190. Hanging in auton every time I saw them, positioning themselves dead center so they could un-cap the stationary goal. It was a thing of beauty.
Thanks to 190 and 179. A great alliance, it just wasn't our time.

Re: Who was the best hanger?

I think 190 was my fav. When I first saw it hang in autonomous, I was amazed.

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Let's see...
The alliance from Ypsi of the curling bots: 279, 66, and 322 were all awesome.
The Huskies, 65, were pretty good too... as were wildstang and team rush (111 and 27... fun to watch them play together, too- Ypsilanti and Chicago).
I'm still in awe of 190 hanging in autonomous.
Beatty could hang fairly well (Witnessed: chicago, nats)
... as could CyberBlue and 'Da Bears (chicago)

As for at the nationals:

Galileo:
I was impressed by 1305, 1359, and 868 for consistency.
I also watched 358 and 157 hang in situtations I thought they'd NEVER be able to. 852 hung very quickly a couple times.
64 was so creative.. I loved watching them move back and forth along the bar.

Archimedes:
111, 71, and I got to see 33 once, which was awesome..I never thought they'd hang that quickly.

Newton:
Very impressed by the hot bot, and there were a few more in the finals that were good too.

Didn't get a chance to watch Curie at all ... :(

There were way more good hanging bots this year than I thought there would be, and trust me...I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot off of this list.

Pin Man 04-21-2004 07:21 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

88 was consistant everytime we wanted to hang (except for the time when our hook caught one of the ball collectors while we tried to stuf them)... :D I was shocked at team 190 (WPI) robot... That thing was sick!!! haha I loved 870 and 871 because they can hang from the 1st plat form... 67 was a great robot for hanging... 111 what can I say??? 111's robot is always awesome... 868 was nice for when I got to see them... I won't go on and name them all but those are just some... I didn't get to see chiefdelphi in action... :( I'll just have to roll the video from soap...

Re: Who was the best hanger?

I loved Chief Delphi's (47) hanging mechanism. They made it look easy, and they did it extremely quickly. I'd also have to nominate Delphi E.L.I.T.E. (48), it was mentioned above, but with 20 seconds they could go up there and have time to spare. Awesome.

Too bad our drivetrain driven (PTO engaged) telescoping arm with 12 feet of reach never got to go on! That would have been awesome....and saved us at Nationals. Oh well...

Alex Pelan 04-21-2004 08:10 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Although I only saw video, 190's autonomous hang/defend stationary/cap stationary combo was pretty cool. As for defending the bar, I liked team 64, the Gila Monsters, because they could move from side to side and they hung so high (although they did suffer a couple falls from the top :ahh: )

Re: Who was the best hanger?

hey thanks to all of those who considered us good at hangin. we saw alot of great hangers also. first 2 teams that stick out are 67 hot bots and 1114 simbotics. 67 hung like it was nothin. and 1114 could cap and hang with out movin from the first platform. thats incredible.

Thankyou 11 for picking us. I agree, I think we should have taken currie, but BUZZ was a BUZZIN. I think 11 hung every match except ours, took 5th overall! (very nice). And our hanger gizmo had stage fright, worked flawlessly on the practice field (hung 5 times over there) But not once in a match... ugh...

Re: Who was the best hanger?

*sigh* I wish 639 could've made it to Championships... Our robot was roughly the same as 48 for hanging time but for the first 2-3 final rounds, a big air leak plagued our system. Nonetheless, this is a cool clip from Finals 1.1 against 1114 & 48: http://www.yan-wang.com/robotics/hanging.wmv

Xufer 04-21-2004 09:30 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

330 was a really good hanger maybe the best, also i did enjoy watching wildstang do the cap then hang right after combo, but my favorite hanger was Team 178 they would hang from the side of the platform it was really cool because of theyre ability to hang off the side of the bar they could hang without fighting the robots above them on the bar they just used the other side, plus they're little base looked so cool haha. ooh and shiney ...

OneAngryDaisy 04-21-2004 10:02 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

is everyone forgetting 868? national finalist, from what I heard from our brothers 1218 their first pick- Las Guerillas (469) convinced 1218 to pick 868 and almost every round a robot or two was blocked by their strafing mechanism..

about winches- yep, I saw 254 hang on the practice field. Their robot is so freaking ROBUST- they zoomed around the field doing all kinds of things, went to the bar with 15 secs left, ripped their hook off, drove far back, and i mean far back- maybe 6 or 7 feet back from the platform, then BANG- their robot just zoomed up and banged the side of the bar insanely hard, it was so fast and brutal. crazy.

about winches- I noticed many teams (cooney quest, spam, etc) had winches and loose cable in a can or something until they started to winch, so it would take 6 seconds or so before they lifted.. we used a (perfect) solution for this, anyone else come up with something to counter this problem?

edit- 666th post, w00t

I saw 237 at the J&J Mid-Atlantic regional, and they were really awesome. Once they got up there, they dominated bar. It was rare that another team would be able to get around them and hang. I never saw 330 in person, but they look pretty awesome, too.

Actually, during one of our Qualifying matches, we managed to pull off a winch that took about five to seven seconds total. That includes hooking and winching. We were really pressed for time. We had a PTO from our drivetrain and were winching at 15ft/sec.

We couldn't move side to while we were hanging, but we could move side to side after we were hooked to the bar. We would hook ourselves to the bar, then using our omnidirectional drive system we would strafe side to side. When the time came to hang, we could just "pop" the pneumatic lifters on our wheels, or retract our extension to get us off the ground.

Solace 04-21-2004 11:22 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

the shovel thing (actually termed the mailbox) was not added until nationals. it is not a tank tread, but a small belt that runs over some beveled rollers (i believe). I've had to face tribe more times than i would have liked to, so i can definitely attest to the fact that they are extremely adept at transversing the bar.

Team 237, was one of the most impressive bots i've seen this year. We had to go against them in the semis at trenton and this is the result: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pi...&quiet=Verbose

That was a great match, and from what i hear, part of the reason team 237 changed the top of their shimmy.

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Wow, is all I can say with the commotion of our shimmy bot. I think that our bot was pretty awesome at hanging, but i still cant fathom that 190 could actually hang in auto and be so centered! Now there is an awesome feat. Also 330 climbing in auto was also a great feat.

And just to clear some stuff up, yes we do hang and shimmy (strafe) at the same time. Also, we added the "mailbox" also known as the dome of doom which 494 can tell you about ;) at the national competition in able to cover a larger area of the bar because we are somewhat slow on the bar. But thank you to everyone on the nice comments and I hope to see yall at the mini comps. (BTB in about a month, cant wait!)

I liked the Gila Monsters (64) bar shimmying or whatever you want to call it device. It was impressive to watch. We were able to hang against though. But it made so it was easy for their partner to hang and we lost.

Pin Man 04-22-2004 12:07 AM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

I liked our hook idea (and everyone else that used it in the same way)... The hook was attached to our arm then we would attach it to the bar and put our arm down, next turn side ways and block any bots needing to get up to the second platform or we could get off the platforms and defend... Then in the very end reel it in... we finally got it to work in NY but it didn't in NJ...

Thank you for the kind words. I had the honor of sitting with team 1108 for most of Friday. You good people are a class act. From your garbage can lids to the respect between students and parents, 1108 is a great FIRST Team. Just for the record: Had we not been picked by team 222, 1108 was our first choice. Eric

There partner was us, we all hung are robots a little different than most....we all curled up instead of pulling up. When we won the Great lakes we were named the "clone alliance". It had some advantages and also some disadvantages. I liked 66 and 279 design a little better than ours because they both added one more reduction to give them a slower curl speed.

Advantage - Could use same arm joint for ball picking and to curl

Disadvantage - A whole lot of torque on one pivot. :ahh:

Wow... I can't believe I forgot. I loved team rush's robot. They hung really easily and had a nice arm with turet...Plus they were a really nice team. Another team member and I must of spent ten minutes talking with their human player. She was extremely bright and fun to talk to.

233 was the best hanger I saw. They could hang in less than ten seconds, and got pretty high up there. 254, 64 (that was so cool when you guys fell of the bar- not that i was hoping you would or anything), 945, and 237 were also really good.

Forgot to mention team 311, I saw them at the FL regional.

Let me guess. The force was broken at Atlanta. I tried to convince my team to use the force but no one would listen.

We put a clutch on the motor shaft to our winch so it freewheeled untill we winched. To keep the cable under control we put a tape measure on so it would wind up the cable on the spool whenever there was slack.

The Gila Monsters impressed me, as did 716 (darn their tie died shirts). I'm still not so sure about the side-of-bar hanging robots, I think that was pushing the rules but thats just me.

Definately 190, they come up with a great design every year. This year was no different. I don't generally like robots that hang immediately, but they actually did something while up there. They could cap, de-cap, and defend the bar. Thats a kool robot by me. Great job 190.

I personally couldn't believe my eyes when I saw team 71's robot lift off the ground at Western Michigan.

279 and 322, awesome. Great allies.

67, very HOT.

That's about it from what I saw.

Re: Who was the best hanger?

Um hello, doesnt anyone remember 716. The only team that beat 71 in the finals in Archimedies. They were deffinitly the best hanger out there in my mind. They hung everytime they actually wanted to, and were undefeted in Quailification. (They also helped out with the highest score in the nation for this years game.. 230.)

Re: Who was the best hanger?

I want to emphasize the amazing abilities of 64 on the bar, they blocked it like that was their bar ( Get outta my house!) and they had a "pretty" robot too.

I also liked 1405, they would get on about 15 secs into human control and ram people off. Along those lines, I also think that 20 was a great hanger. They would clip on, block like no other, and could uncap while hanging. I loved that robot.

Matt D 04-24-2004 02:01 PM

Re: Who was the best hanger?

My personal favorite was 64 which is why I picked them in fantasy first. I also really liked 190, my first pick in FF. (someone really wanted 190 so I traded it for 175). I though both of their hanging mechanisms were amazing.

Thanks for all of the comments. We have fallen from the bar three times, once in Az (cord snapped) and twice at nationals. Once our hook unbent the very second before we latched our drive mechanism onto the bar(that was the worst one) and the second our winch gears came loose. All three times we were right back up on the bar for our next match!

As for my favorite hangers, 1405 - very fast and reliable, the only ones in galileo who beat us up onto the bar! Not to mention our alliance partners for the finals. Also 330 - a fellow shimmy, these guys never fail to impress me.
