Where did you build your robot?

Hey where did everybody build their robot this year? Like, did u do it at school, at a space with your sponsor..etc?

AdamT 26-02-2002 23:25

At a local *20 minute drive in rush hour traffic local* high school. Who knows next year.

Wetzel 27-02-2002 03:37

The High School.

Brian Savitt 27-02-2002 15:24

We built and practiced with it at our sponsor (10-15 minutes away)Ethicon

We built TOBOR V at Appleton East, one of the four high schools involved in the program (the school with the most students involved and the machine shop!!) The engineers from 2 of our sponsors (Plexus and Kimberly Clark) drove to the high school every day... which is a good 15-20 minute drive!! Students also machined some parts at FVTC (Fox Valley Technical College, another sponsor) so I guess you could say the robot was partially built there too! :)

Melissa Nute 27-02-2002 21:50

In the sponsor's shop at his home.

Mimi Brown 27-02-2002 22:56

We built IN the chemistry room...talk about little to no room...

Wayne Doenges 28-02-2002 06:37

We built ours at the high school machine shop. We had plenty of room.
We practice at an old Target department store. We got a free lease donated :) It's located about 100 yds away from the school. In fact, the back of the store is against the school parking lot. Also there was carpeting on the floor already.
For other teams that don't have a good place to practice, this is worth looking into.

We used our company sponsor (AFL) to build the robot, and for the engineers to test-drive it. It was funny. Seeing our robot run around in cubicals, LOL, but the main testing, ball getting and goal grabbing, where done in our school's old Auto shop. We had TONS of room!

build area

Our team was VERY LUCKY to get a new space from our sponsor. We moved out of our old area on site and into an area that is a little more sectioned off than the old area. It is about 30-45 minutes away from most of the student's schools, but we come from 8 highschools, and we have one homeschooler.

The seperated ares are good so we can keep the refridgerator away from the electrical work area. And keep the computer crew away from everyone else; no one likes them anyways.
(hee hee J/K you guys :D We luv you anyways.)

Matt Attallah 01-03-2002 15:01

HEY!

With out the computer people, the robot wouldn't move!!!

Greg Perkins 01-03-2002 15:32

Re: where we build ours

C.H.A.O.S. uses its sponsor Osram Sylvania for their building/practicing area. It's really nice, and the boys at Osram are the best!

Clark Gilbert 02-03-2002 12:30

Shops

We build ours in an empty part of a warehouse at our local power company Cinergy/PSI...

They are gracious enough to donate us a huge amount of space for our playing field, our tools/machines, and many other things. They also do this in return for nothing, which i believe is really nice of them to do.:)

We build our robot at NASA Ames Research Center. We have a couple rooms. We have a mini-machine shop, an office and two other rooms. We're sponsored by a machine shop, so thats were we do our real machining. It's located about ten minutes away from school.

Ian W. 18-03-2002 21:52

we got stuck in the aerospace and flight room, because it's the tech advisor's room. it's apretty big classroom, along with a small off room for computers, which i might add were extrememly slow, and for a majority of the build period, disconnected from the school network. because of that, we had to "hack" in (safe mode), and change the network settings, so we could program! :D we had enough room, but we didn't have any more tools beyond like, a jigsaw (one of the students), a bajillion year old drill press, a circular saw, and all the regular hand tools. if anyone wants to donate tools to us, feel free. :D

In the mall!!!!

We have a store front in the Mall (I use the term loosely). We are located between the only movie theater in town and a pizza parlor. Sears is stones throw away. We have displayed dead robots and trophys in the front. The walkers give us a few odd looks when we are in the robot building season....

Not much for machine tools but we are on display to the community. Tools, Pizza and Movies are within a short walk.

Scorpion515 19-03-2002 15:14

We built ours at one of our sponsors (New Era Technologies). We had tons of room. Lots of machines to play with.

:D

yeah, dupont was nice to us this year and gave us a huge area to work with. they also let us use their huge machine shop with sheet metal sheers (and punches, benders, and angle cutters), bridgeports (which for anyone who doesn't know are drill presses that are electronically measured to 0.0005 of an inch), a nine foot tall drill press that can power a three inch drill bit (which I have personally seen and are quite cool, but also quite heavy), an eight foor tall bandsaw with a jaw that opens up to two feet, radii saws, and a rotary. they've given us a lot and we're thankful for it. they've also spent the time to officially train all of us so that we can use these machines (which dupont wouldn't let us do if we didn't have proper training).

Simon

p.s. stupid washers!

Joe3 30-03-2002 22:33

3 cheers for DuPont

Amy Beth 07-04-2002 18:53

They didn't give us cash, but AES corporation donated space at their power plant for us to build the robot. If any of you saw "The One" with Jet Li, it's the same place where they filmed the big fight scene.

Digo 08-04-2002 00:14

The Brazilian Machine builds its robot during vacations, so we use a normal classroom, wich is pretty big. Inside the classroom, there is a small room separated by a glass wall, wich is our "kitchen" or space for relaxing. ;)

Judy 11-04-2002 18:52

My team's fab guy pulled out as a result of money problems related to the whole 9/11 tragedy.... So we ended up down at team 907's school in the machine shop. Lots of fun... Lotsa gas too
*hugz to all as alwayz*

We have our own class room just for first with machines every where and we have our own playing field right next door. We use our school machine shop to make parts and the auto body paint shop. We use every shop at school to make the robot.
