Re: Rubik's Cubes

The last time I tried to solve one of those rubik cubes it took me almost all day to just get one whole side. It was fun. :ahh:

I love Rubik's cubes! They are really fun. I always solve it in under 3 minutes, usually under 2, and if I'm lucky under 1! Now I have to get one of those 4x4x4 rubik's cubes! ;)

My boyfriend has one of those. And his best friend solved it.

Multi-Axis Trainer

I thought it was time to revive this thread. Many of us appear to be fascinated once again by this 3x3 puzzle. Especially Team 177 and Team 1649. Since the Cube is back, who here can solve it? What is your best time? How many people on your team has caught cube fever? Where is the craziest place you have ever solved the cube?

My top time so far is 2 min 4 sec.

However, my best time on the Multi-Axis Trainer is four minutes. Top this.

Note: The first 8 seconds of the video is black. Give it time. Also, I could not convert the DVD format to one acceptable to Google Video that has sound. Perhaps some one could assist me with this. Thanks.

Re: Rubik's Cubes

I can solve a cube. I'm not too fast, I only know the 'Layer' method, which is definitely NOT the fastest way. But I can consistently solve it in under 3-4minutes (never really kept track).

I've only solved it while sitting somewhere, or even standing too...:yikes: lol

Re: Rubik's Cubes

Rubik's Cubes suddenly became a fad throughout my grade within the last 3 weeks of the school year. As for myself, I have always liked them. I've solved it a couple times, but it was major luck. I can get a few sides within 4 minutes. LOL. I've never really tried to learn how though.

One of the kids on our team can solve them in <1 min, behind his back.

It's pretty crazy.

Re: Rubik's Cubes

I was asked this year to MC a Rubik's cube contest. I believe that it was a National contest and the winner won a trip to, I believe, Budapest, Hungary for the world championships. The winner, a 13 year old grade 8 student won with an average, over 5 solves, of 14.21 seconds. After the first round of over 60 contestants the cut off of the top 25 people was around 45 seconds average for 5 solves.

The cutoff for the 4 x 4 was 3 minutes over 2 solves and the 5 x 5 was 4 minutes over 2 solves. These were not average but must have at least 1 under the time frame.

These are the results of the Canadian Open held at the Ontario Science Center: Link at http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/?q=node/41

Rubik's 3x3x3 Cube Harris Chan 12.72 14.21 Canada 12.72 13.69 15.53 13.40 18.71
Rubik's 4x4x4 Cube Matt Walter 1:06.67 1:14.00 Canada 1:06.67 1:18.66 1:16.53 1:17.97 1:07.50
Rubik's 5x5x5 Cube Matt Walter 2:18.31 2:25.62 Canada 2:30.77 2:25.55 2:45.00 2:20.53 2:18.31
Rubik's 2x2x2 Cube Craig Bouchard 6.86 8.75 NR Canada 9.22 14.61 9.21 7.83 6.86
3x3x3 blindfolded Chris Krueger 1:15.60 WR USA 1:55.83 DNF 1:15.60
3x3x3 one-handed Dave Campbell 28.03 35.66 Canada 40.45 35.43 31.09 46.63 28.03
Rubik's Magic Rhodri Mativo 1.36 1.42 Canada 1.43 1.43 1.41 2.03 1.36
Rubik's Master Magic Craig Bouchard 2.78 3.25 Canada 3.30 3.25 3.19 5.08 2.78

The World Record for the 3x3x3 Blindfold was set at this event. It was amazing to see the cube completed in 1 min 15.60 seconds after having a first look at it. The contestant can pick up and look at the cube as long as they like but must put on blindfold before making any moves. Time starts as soon as the cube is in view ( they lift off a cover).

Re: Rubik's Cubes

A friend and co-worker named Scott (the brains behind the FLL games here at the office) taught me how to solve the cube after a few lunchtime sessions, and my own persistence and practice at home. I am pretty steadily at two minutes, but have gotten times as low as 1:14. My average according to this page is 100.585 seconds. My cube is lubricated with motorcycle grease, though others I have talked to prefer graphite.

Solving the cube has nothing to do with math - common myth - nor do you have to be a genius to solve it. You merely need to be able to recognize patterns and remember a solution for that pattern. It's fairly simple.

My cube travels with me everywhere I go (especially traveling, as there is a lot of dead time in airports and on planes). If you'd like and you are traveling to IRI, ask me for 10 minutes of my time and I will happily show you how to solve for one side. :)
