We also have a very "diverse" group on our robotics team. Out school is situated on the campus of UCSD, so we have a couple of college students too.

School:
2 teachers that to PR
1 teacher that helps with robot

Mechanical:
1 student from UCSD
2 engineers from Naval Systems & Warfare

Electrical:
1 engineer

Programming:
2 engineers, 1 student from UCSD

That brings the total to 5 engineers, 2 UCSD students, 1 teacher for people that help us on the robot

Machine Shop and Welding:
We found a local machine shop to let us use mostly the manual tools in their shops, and we've made a friendship with a local metal artist to do our welding.

More specifically we have:
3 mechanical engineers
2 chemical engineers
1 electrical engineer
1 management, works as a test engineer
1 financial, only non-teacher mentor who does not work for the UTC Fuel Cells/UTC Power
4 teachers, 2 tech ed, 1 english, and 1 French I believe.

Edit- I forgot to list our two of most important mentors
1 Fuel cell mechanic (that's his real job title), our team scrounger if you need it he will find it or figure out where to get
1 Fuel cell inspector/certified welder, he's the one who welded our frame and it's intergral accumulator for our vacuum system.

We have around five mentors from Stanford but they really only run workshops on the basics of robotics. I'm proud to say our robot is 100% student built, machined, programmed and run! Thanks to all you mentors out there for devoting your time and energy to spread your expertise to the next generation of engineers. :)

What's our mentor make up??

1 Physics Teacher
1 District Administrator (Info Services Director)
3-5 Parents
2 of those parents happen to be a Physicist and an Engineering Professor.

The 1 lonely teacher takes on 95% of organizing and planning it all - which leaves the funnest 5% to the other mentors that is helping students design and build the gosh darn robot.

*** Has anyone else noticed the reluctance of science and math teachers to join the team - after 4 years - not one other teacher at our school want's anything to do with us.... Hmmm?? Don't get me wrong, they support the students and love what we're doing but....

We have two main mentors who work as engeneers for Microvision , and a few alumni of the robotics club, and of couse our old CEO and founder RyanMcE. We also have our physics teacher helping out, but he acts more like a chaporone than a mentor. We also have a parent volenteer to take care of the financial aspects of the club. We also have our common sense, which is definatly a great mentor.

All of our mentors are either teachers who teach high school students engineering or they are engineers. Mainly from our sponsers, like BAE Systems, Boeing ect... and parents who are some how tied to engineering. Example my father is an Electonics Tech and often helps out when the electrical engineer can't figure out how something works or how to tell us students how something works. LOL

Our mentor team is composed of 3 engineers from DCX (one devoted to the programming aspect of FIRST and two who help with the design and build of all parts on the robot) and one electrical engineer who is a parent of 2 team members. We also have 3 teachers who work with us on a full-time basis (one helping with mainly PR, one teaching physics, and one aiding us with design and CAD), and one who teaches all of us machining specifically.

It was a first (pun intended :yikes: ) for our team this year in that we had industry mentors in addition to the team of six HS teachers.

USAF ME assisted with everything mechanical

1 math teacher
1 physics, chem, engineering drawing... teacher
1 technology teacher
1 art teacher webpage and graphics
1 electronic Arts teacher - webpage and animation


I have a current interest for those mentors in college. I would appreciate information in regards to credit you may be receiving for your mentorship. I.e. are you taking a class such as an independent study or similar? Are you assigned as a co-op student and one of your primary responsibilities is mentoring FIRST. See my recent post in a different forum.

We have two science teachers from Malvern and one engineer from CTDI (our main sponsor). However, they take a relatively lassiez faire attitude towards us - we have to make all the major decisions and actually build the robot ourselves.

2 of our mentors are teachers, 1 is a student at a local college, 1 is an electrical engineer, the rest have children on the team. we have all parent mentors (this dosnt mean they're not engineers)

We have mentors from a variety of different fields and backgrounds. We have teachers [calc, and physics], engineers, parents with all sorts of jobs relating to and not relating to engineering, alumni, friends of teachers, etc.
I think it makes our team unique that some of our mentors arn't in fields related to engineering at all. It is important to have the other aspects because to have a sucessful FIRST team, it isn't just the engineering factor that is important. Business, art, etc. majors are also important for the behind the scenes part. Also even just a mentor with a smiling face is a big help, they boost our morale and thats important.

Our team is sponsored by motorola so we have like alot mentors that help out from Motorola which are either software engineers, or mechanical or electrical engineers. Then we have about 5-6 parents that help out. Then we have teachers from both schools that help out (Wheeling HS and Rolling Meadows HS). Not very many alumni help out. But the engineers that help out, there is a certain amount that help with mechanical part of robot, electrical, firmware, software part, video shooting, building the playing field. So were like a small company. So all the mentors are spread out and help.

We have:
1 engineer
2 teachers (one is our coach)
2 adult mentors who attend regularly - one restores antique cars, the other is a carpenter (he built much of our playing field for us)

They are all wonderful mentors and let us learn from our mistakes...even if it's annoying, its the best way to learn. Our engineer, Andy Brockway, is especially wonderful. He devotes so much time to the team, and is a great teacher. He won't always give us the solutions to our problems; rather, he will let us make mistakes in order to give us a better learning experience. Mr. Lindsay, our coach, is also very helpful in this way. Yay for outstanding mentors!!! :D
