Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
FIRST just posted the regional web winners and mentioned that there were also 75 teams that won the 2004 Web Excellence Award .
My questions are: Which teams won the award? What factors do you think earned the recognition for your team? What is your link so that others can learn from your design? We'll start the process: Team 341 won in Philly. We kept the design simple, tuned in to the FIRST Message, and close to the Award specs. We also made sure that the site conveyed the enthusiasm that we feel for FIRST. Our link is: www.team341.com Hopefully we can get a response from all 75 teams! |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I think team 48's student designed website won the award. (see front page)

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
FIRST already made an entire list:
http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2004...te_winners.htm [EDIT] That's only a list of the best website awards, it doesn't include the excellence award. |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
134 won the BAE in Manchester, though we are yet to get the little icon thingy. FIRST has tryed to send it to us twice.

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Is team 691's website down or did FIRST give us the wrong link?? I clicked on it thinking I was going to see a great website. It redirected me to something else.

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Team 343, Metal in Motion was just recently informed that we won a 2004 Web Excellence Award at the St. Louis regional.
www.metalinmotion.com We too are having problems getting the image to attach to our site. |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Our students won the Excellence Award in Detroit.
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
We won the Website Excellence award for [Insert Regional Here]. Is this a gesture of kindness from FIRST, or something? I'll stop speaking right now :).

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I'd like to see a list of the 75 teams that got the recognition... is there one?
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Our team won in Chesapeake.
I think one factor that involves our win is that we update our page frequently. I have browsed a good many websites over the years and a good many of them are never updated. www.tigertrons.com |

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I'm confused. So, you didn't have to submit your website or anything to receive this website excellence award? Because we got an email saying we were awarded it with the little logo and everything but we thought it was sent to us by mistake.

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
ALL websites in the FIRST database (ie if you looked at the regional attendees lists at usfirst.org and the team name was linked to a team site) were judged for the website awards. Any site that score 80% or higher on scoring is awarded the Website Excellence Award. I assume the winner gets it too :)
Team 639 got it for the Canadian Regional. Visit us at www.team639.org The site was completely redesigned this year so it is not back to the level as it once was in terms of user features for team members. Well, I guess you can't use that stuff anyway. |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
That image of our website on FIRST's page kinda sucks. I think it was taken with an early version of Opera 7, which has a known positioning bug seen in the title and on the bottom. For the record, the site works in the major three browsers (and other up-to-standard ones such as Safari), but I think there are a quite a few more content-based reasons Woburn Robotics Online did so well; here's a short article I wrote when I first made it, about the design involved. And here's what Woodie had to say about the award. You can see he mainly speaks of resources and the Ask188 feature.
And the winners get these buttons (not quite the same as the excellence ones): ![]() Nothing cool for the Champs winner though. Other than a third trophy... :D |

8.8 WEBSITE DESIGN AWARDS The Website Design Award recognizes excellence in student-designed, built, and managed FIRST team websites. Eligible websites are judged/scored PRIOR to the competition by a panel of judges. Two subcategories of awards will be given for website design: 1) “Website Excellence” 2) “Best Website.” Every submission that meets the FIRST website design standards of excellence will receive the Website Excellence award. Website Excellence award winners will receive an electronic certificate to include on their websites, and will be featured prominently on the FIRST website. At each Regional Competition, there will be one award for Best Website. The overall championship Best Website award winners will be chosen from among the regional winners. 8.8.1 Submission and Deadline Information Only team websites that are entered into the FIRST team management information system via the FIRST website by noon (12:00 p.m.) on February 20, 2004 will be judged. Team websites are eligible for these awards at every regional event in which the team is competing. Only one electronic Website Excellence certificate will be awarded per team for the entire competition season. A team is eligible to win the Best Website award at multiple regional events. Aside from the fact that they posted the Regional Best Website winners on the FIRST website instead of all the 75 Website Excellence winners (which makes perfect sense), I believe everything stated in the rules above is correct. As long as your website was registered with FIRST's TIMS system by the deadline, your team was automatically entered into consideration for both awards. |

Team 383 won (one of?) the Website Excellence Award(s?) at the Midwest regional.
Here's the site in English :) |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I think there is some confusion about the purpose of the thread. Please read this carefully.
FIRST has posted the Best Web Site Winners for each regional. That is a very good resource. But FIRST has not (as far as I can tell) posted the 75 Web Excellence Winners. The intent of the thread is to find the 75 teams that won the Web Excellence Award, have those teams respond with their links and just leave a brief description of why they think they were awarded the honor. Please reread the thread starter and you'll see what we are looking for. Thanks to everyone that responded so far and good luck in the off-season!! |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Team 1097 won a Website Excellence Award at SVR.
http://robotics.jhs.net I would say our site has a good looking design and awesome graphics (which were actually used on our shirts) but hasn't been updated too often. Also, we were informed that our text is a little too small...could we have some feedback on this? |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I'm not quite sure if our team got an excellence award or not. I haven't talked to our advisor much since competition, and I have forgotten to ask him.
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
234 got it at Arizona :)
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
217 got it at Detroit and at MidWest.
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
616 got the Website Excellence Award.
- Kept the site design the same through all the pages, easy to navigate, two links to FIRST on every page, keep site updated, have pictures and videos (and a random MIDI on each page). |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Team 1168 (Malvern Robotics) won a website excellence award - we have an easy-to-navigate site written in PHP with a constant navigation header and footer on every page, as well as a consistent color scheme.

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Yes!!
Posts number 26 & 27 are the format we are looking for to complete this thread. Thank you!! Lets get all 75!!! |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Team 492 recieved the Best Website Award in the Pacific Northwest Regional
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
For those of you who are receiving the website excellence award. How is FIRST presenting it to your team? Are they e-mailing it to your webmaster? To your main contact? Who from FIRST is making the contact with your team?
Our e-mail server was down the last two weeks and I am <shameless plug> rather partial to our site </> but the server is now back up and it would be really cool if we received one of the awards. |

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Team 96 won and website excellence award.
http://www.team96.org Our site was completely student built, contains some programs (VB, PHP, etc) that students made, links to local teams, some amusing stories (the lessons learned section is hilarious, in my humble opinion). The main site works off of one file, index.php, which calls the pages content from a MySQL database, generates a navbar thaty expands out for whatever catagory you are browsing. We also have a scouting database. The forum we use isn't made by the team, but the webmaster is the program leader for the team that does develope it (and yes, he is me, and I am a student). Right now the site looks a little different, because we are working on some more stuff. |
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
Sorry about reviving the thread, but I just found out that my team won a website excellence award for the Southern California Regional. Currently, however, the site is being updated so ya can't really see the page.
|
Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
I probably ought to note that the Website Excellence Award at FIRSTWiki has a list of the Website Excellence Award winners. However, the list was taken from this thread so it's still horribly incomplete - only 14 of the 75 winners have been identified.

Re: Web Excellence Award Winners (Which Teams?)
RAGE, Team 173, won a Website Excellence Award for the UTC Regional and for the Mid-Atlantic regional in NJ.
