Re: How do You Use Cheifdephi?
To waste time when I have lots of work, or anytime in general.

Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
Whenever I happen to be by the computer. I have the Chief Delphi forums set in my "favorites" list. I usually check the forums a few times a day just to see what's going on or to check up on a thread that interests me. I also check the forums after I've been on Ebay looking for extra parts for my '68 Mustang.

Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
I’ve found that only a few members from any team actually are active users of Chief Delphi. That really is a shame since there is so much information here.
The beauty of Chief Delphi and what I get the most from it is the community. We all have our own teams that we are involved with, but there is so much more to it. FIRST is so much more than 6 weeks of build and some competition, but it’s awareness. Everyone is changed by the FIRST experience. We all work toward a common goal. Think about each team being a city, and FIRST as the country that we all belong to. It would be a shame if we kept our city to ourselves. We have ideas to share. Chief Delphi allows us to do that. It binds us as a community. |
Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
I guess CD is my connection to the FIRST community. A lot of times I come heat to just read some of the opinions and learn some new things. I try to use it to keep the team I mentor more aware of the FIRST community and its ideals.
It is good at reminding you how little this competition is a robot building competition at times. I enjoy reading many of the people thought and opinions and try to offer my own opinions whenever I think they will constructively add to a thread. I am the main person who has spent time one CD for my team. A couple of mentors have been on at times as guest but don't post. I've been working on getting team members interested in joining the site because I think they could get a lot more out of it than me. I think this summer I will focus on getting our teams programmers and animators on here because CD has many great resources for these people that are currently not taken advantage of by any of my team members. |
Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
I spend most of my time on the computer here. And, I'm the only active member on me team. :)
Points of those can be seen in previous posts. :) |
Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
There are only two other people from my team who read the board, and we're all now mentors. I use the boards to find information and news and bring it back to the team. Like back in '03 when our motors were acting horribly, thanks to CD we found out about all the various things that could cause a motor trouble, and that we pretty much had every single problem ;) . This year CD was our best resource in figuring out what the heck was going to happen in Atlanta since we had no clue. We wuv Chief Delphi :).

Re: How do You Cheifdelphi?
I have delphi as my home page so I can stay connected to FIRST whenever I log on. I like top spend time here to keep myself connected to FIRST as well as helping my team stay updated on the FIRST community. I also like to have delphi there for problems or questions that my team has.

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
bein the most active person on cd in my team, i use it b/c i find there are usually some interesting things giong on here
Eg the maths / science forums are usually bustling with things that geeks like me actuallty read/ care bout. It has been useful in the past for things and i have no dougbt it will be again |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
i use chiefdelphi to stay connected to the FIRST world and try to provide help whenever i can....i get a great deal of enjoyment out of helping other teams and people with problems, that is probably the reason i am a mentor in the first place
it;s also alot of fun.....chiefdelphi is my one of my home "tabs" (mozilla) |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use chiefdelphi to stay connected with friends on other teams and to offer my help with things that I might be knowledgeable about.
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use chiefdelphi to my brain "update" on FIRST community :D And I am the only one on our team that active on chiedelphi.
I usually check forum twice a day. Sometime I ask stupid questions or post some info just to participate ;) This is a really nice and organized site. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I love the interaction. Sincere people willing to speak their mind and share ideas. What a better way to learn. I enjoy the insight of the students. being an old working guy, I have learned that instead of becoming a grumpy old man (NO comments from Team 188 or Karthik) I become encouraged and energized. ChiefDelphi extends the competition season year round and keeps me in touch with those that would like to lose track of me. I applaud the word done here and I am thankful for the priviledge of membership.

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Chief delphi is a great way to communicate ideas, meet people, and gain knowledge is multiple fields. I use it to either get help, help other people, or to sometimes jsut have fun. I mean hey, I met my g/f through chiefdelphi!

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Comming from 2 active CD using teams, (263 and 229), I always have thought of CD as the place to come for answers. Now I help give the answers as a moderator and MechE mentor for team 229. If you were to ask me in 2001 when I joined FIRST where I would have been in 4 years...probably not what I would have said, but quite glad I got here.
As for reading CD threads...I usually do not read anything in chit-chat and stick to the more technical forums and off-season discussion. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use it to look up stuff, of course, but I always use it to waste time during study hall, being that it's the only useful website I can get on, despite the school's websense.
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
For a bunch of things
-Fun (CD = my home page) -Procrastination (in fact, thats what i'm doing right now) -Keeping up with the first news -Learning about all this stuff that I don't know. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Hello,
I come here for amusement, to provide knowledge of electronics, and mostly to get answers. It is like a large, evolving encyclopedia, with useless and useful topics. Sort of like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, except only applying to FIRST. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Reasons I go on Cheif Delphi:
1. To feel like I have a social life. 2. To get necessary information. 3. To make new buddies! 4. Lots of other reasons, but above all else, because FIRST rocks! |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I Chiefdelphi to obtain valuable information that is not accessible through any other site/book. I use it to relate robotics with the "real world"... if there is one. ;)
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
To meet new people.
To connect with other teams. To have a social life. To entertain. (why else would i type my username with my elbows) And to discuss robotics tech when the chance is needed. (I'm the only active member from me team) |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Basically this is where I just want to chat and see what is going on in the FIRST world. Any new ideas, what are other teams doing, whose got what type of robot, etc. That is what I come for.
I joined in about February of this year because a team mate showed me this. Its awesome that such a massive forum was made by one team, ChiefDelphi. It makes me wonder, who else had such an idea but never got around to doing it? None the less, I ChiefDelphi for many reasons. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
For entertainment purposes only... oops... wait a minute... that's why I use my Magic 8 Ball... I think ChiefDelphi is one of the best (if not the best) resources for FIRST. I use it for ideas for team spirit, Chairman's Award, outreach, fundraising... and it never fails to amaze me that so many people are so willing to share their ideas. I also use it to learn. When I used to do store openings and training, I was asked what I would do when someone didn't understand what I was teaching them. I said I would find another way to explain it. There are so many wonderful "teachers" on ChiefDelphi, and so many views on any subject, that even I, a well-known disliker of science and math, can learn how something works.
And it's fun! Face it, ChiefDelphi is just good company. Heidi <=========> and I bet you all thought I would say I use it to make fun of Dave :D |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
1. Info....i don't think there is a better resource out there than ChiefDelphi. Recently I worked on a hovering robot, and had some programming/control system problems. I posted a thread, and within minutes, people had solved my problems.
2. Stay Updated....you'll learn things on ChiefDelphi much sooner than any other source. 3. It's good to be able to participate in discussion with intelligent people holding simular goals/ideas as you. |

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use ChiefDelphi as a source for more robotics info. There are a lot of informative threads and there are also lots of interesting people. It's a great place to just browse around and find interesting things. I started reading ChiefDelphi before I was officially on Cyber Blue 234 and it just made my interest even stronger.

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
For fun, to goof off........and more importantly to get info and help. Without ChiefDelphi where would we go for help at 2AM in the morning when something goes wrong?

Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
1) Procrastination
2) Bordome I found out that one of my teammates is on here but he hasn't made any posts yet, I'll make him starting tomorrow. :) |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use chiefdelphi to find out information and read opinions of other people in FIRST. I also read threads when I'm procrastinating on my homework, like I'm doing right now.

1. I use Chief Delphi to teach myself that a robotics team is not the limit for a graduating high school student, helping field reset at a regional competition is not the limit for a college student volunteer, and running an off season competition is not the limit for 21 years old young adult. Every day I come in to read some discussion and remind myself that there are endless potential for a single human being who is willing to stretch his/her imagination to whichever direction he/she wants. Then I remind myself this world is full of wonderful people, especially in FIRST, and that I am the only limit to the endless possibilities out there. 2. I use Chief Delphi as a testing ground for my imaginations. I come up with a new idea, I think about it as I type it up, I get excited as I successfully present my idea in the form of writing, I get nervous about what kind of responds I will get, I get angry at myself for posting a foolish idea, I keep refreshing the page for new replies, I read the replies and learn from any constructive criticism there are, then I re-think my idea and repeat step one. 3. Every time I log into Chief Delphi, it feels like I am plugged into a virtual reality with only thoughts and ideas in its own little universe. Sometimes the ideas are stimulating, sometimes they are funny, and sometimes they are sad. I don't particularly care what kind if information float through my mind, as long as they keep coming in and change my soul little by little. I smile when I sense a funny little conversation over in this corner, or I pay attention when I hear an energetic discussion over in that corner. It doesn't matter how those discussion ends, as long as the process of the discussion continues from one to another. It feels like I can do this forever and ever. 4. To me, the Chief Delphi Forum feels like a Cafe I am always welcome to. Many cool people are aware of this Cafe, and they stop by whenever they want and chat with the people there just for fun. No one is unwelcome to this place, as long as you don't act mean or disrespectful. I come to this Cafe to meet cool people, talk to them, get to know them, and share my experiences with them. Many times I come here to ask for advices or have fun with the discussions, but usually I come to relax and put myself in a state of mind that's most enjoyable to me. I feel like I am in a place with only the best of the human experience in here. No need to worry about suffering or death, only ways to improve yourself and the world around you. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Why:
-To keep my sanity (ironicly) -To talk to people I understand -For help and helping How: -Whenever I have free time and a web connection (school, home, hotel room...) |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Why do I ChiefDelphi? Here's my top ten list...
10. Keep me from taking life too seriously. This place is FUN! 9. Find out more about this JVN character. 8. Put faces to names I’ve heard many, MANY times. 7. Keep up to date with the latest FIRST news - sometimes it hits CD before it hits the official FIRST website. 6. See what Andy Baker is up to…that sneaky little future survivor! 5. Provides year-round "participation" in the FIRST experiment/experience. 4. Great source of information on a wide variety of topics 3. Dave Lavery points out some pretty cool stuff. 2. If I didn't my students would pester me until I did! 1. Uncontrollably, unconsciously, undeniably, unquestionably addicted to FIRST. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I first got on to CD just to be on, now i'm on because it seems that will be the only other way to maintain contact and keep up w/ updates from FIRST other than the monday night meetings while i'm in college
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use delphi to talk to friends from other states to scout early on in the season and i use it to have funa nd make friends.
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I had 7 Things to do this morning, Yet Decided to Chiefdelphi Some more :D
Q. How do You Chiefdelphi? A. Stressed and Overflowed:ahh: -Osc- |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
i use chief delphi to get out my ideas about FIRST and the direction it should go and to offer opinions and advice on different topics. Chiefdelphi is a community in which all members of FIRST can work together as one team instead of many.

On ChiefDelphi, I:
> Give Help > Get Help > Stay in touch with people I've met through FIRST > Talk about random geek-type stuff (i.e. welding with water :yikes: ) > Try to reduce my episodes of FSAS (FIRST Separation Anxiety Syndrome) ;) -Q |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I always pay attention to technical discussions to see what ideas I can pick up. And ChiefDelphi has given me plenty of ideas to think about. I also learn new things every day with discussions on chemistry, electronics, game design, ... (list goes on for infinity + 1 :] ). Its is a great resource for new teams and veteran team of FIRST, because it is open to everyone. ChiefDelphi is for people who think of robotics all day, all night.
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I spend a fair amount of cruising CD to read and talk about various things; mechanical stuff, inventor, and any other random topics that come about. I have learned a large number of new facts by doing this. CD is a vibrant community, and I find it fun and informative to read posts by the other users on this site.
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Chiefdelphi is my Myspace.
It's a fun place to hang out and network with other people in FIRST and talk turkey with my FIRST friends. And it's not in the crosshairs like Myspace is. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I use Chief Delphi to learn all sorts of FIRST related things from publicity to Inventor. CD really helps me stay connected to FIRST year round and reminds me that I am not the only robotics/engineering nerd on the planet! (Of course, I would never use CD for procrastination... ;) )
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I first used Chief when our lead mentor told us we had to post on it at least once, but now I find it is a useful tool for quick help or for advice giving; plus, you get to meet people from other teams (one things i always look forward to at competitions). It's also a good way to spend a day-there's so much stuff to read about so many different things!
|
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
Pretty much the same as I've mentioned before. The only difference is due to a change of job responsibilities last November I don't have as much time as I've had before. Some of the people on here may have noticed I haven't been as active as I used to be on here. I do still pop on here whenever I can though.
The sad part is I also missed most of the build season with 237. I think I only attended a total of 8 or 9 meetings last year with most of them being the last week. What's even worse is I had no idea what our robot looked like or even what we were planning on doing until I was able to show up to a meeting on the 3rd week! :ahh: |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
I started visiting CD to check up on what my son was spending so much time doing! I have next to no tech background, but CD motivated me to learn computer basics.
Now I'm becoming addicted and use the site to: -See what other teams are doing and borrow/develop/steal their ideas regarding PR,fundraising, etc. -Scout the field prior to competitions -Laugh, cheer, cry over the various happenings of others in the FIRST community -Get clarification or answers to questions I haven't thought of yet -To feel a part of an activity that totally consumes my son and husband 6 weeks (at least) a year -To connect with NEMO, which I recently joined. |
Re: How do You Chiefdelphi?
^minus the whole parent part, i'm gonna have to agree with Pat A.
idea sharing is a great part of these forums, especially since my team is just getting off the ground. This is a great way to connect to the FIRST community for us, many of whom have no prior experience in FIRST. actually, 19/20 have none of said experience. |
