Has the price of a gallon of gas reached your team number yet??

I saw a news clip the other day where low grade gas was $2.37 a gallon, and usually when I see my team's number I let out a Homer-Simpson-like Whoo Hoo!!
As you can guess, I did not this time, cause it was pretty sad/scary.:ahh:

Has anyone else seen their team number at the pumps lately?

Oh, and for you 4 digit team numbers, you can include the last 9 from the 9/10 in the sighting. ;)

Up here in Canada we are the lowest team number. If gas, bought by the litre, ever reaches $1.88, we will be in HUGE trouble. I paid $1.00.8/litre for premium the other day. Nearly killed me. :(

I went to the Citgo station by my house the other day and they had taken the signs down to change them. Needless to say the sign was blank and I figured it was one of those things, if you have to ask you can't afford it! :D I gave the clerk a $10 for 93 octane and got just under 4 gallons.

Oh, and the blank sign, for those of you who put #0000 for your team number.........yes, it has reached the point of your team number too! :p

Wow you guys are lucky. Gas here in L.A is a good $2.30 and thats on a good day. Our idiot president, no offense to any right-wingers out there but I hate Bush, can't even get oil here from Iraq even though thats the reason we went in anyway. So back to the thread, I don't think gas has ever been 22 cents.

There are roughly 3.79 liters/gallon, thus at $1.01 CDN /liter, meaning $3.83 CDN / gallon which roughly on a good day would convert to $2.82 US / gallon, i would say they have it rougher still...

Okay! Here goes that "old guy" stuff. As a senior in high school in 1966 I remember paying as little as 28 cents a gallon. That was the main reason we had all those "screaming monster" V8's running around town. I do not recall gas going over one dollar a gallon until the early 70's.

According to the inflation calcuator:

What cost $.28 in 1966 would cost $1.54 in 2002.

I don't know how accurate that is really, but it's kind of interesting...

$2.14 for regular
$2.24 for premium
$2.34 for the other stuff

Why do you buy 93 octane? The only reason to have it is if your engine starts pinging from pre-ignition. Cause 93 octane combusts ata higher temperature than a lower octane gas. Almost all cars will run fine, without any problems or better gas mileage with 87 octane gas.

Quote:

I remember a radio station about a little less than a year ago did a promotion thing and had gas stations calling in to bid the lowest price on gas and the radio station would come out to that station for a day and buy gas for the first certain number of people. And two gas stations got into a live vocal battle until a station finally got down to $0.01. So it was that low at a gas station for a day. If only a radio station could do a similar promotion now.

And the worse part, I drive a gas hog. A 1997 Ford Explore, i also sometimes drive a 2004 Jeep Liberty and that also likes to drink gas at a rapid rate.

I just got home from a short trip to the Wood Works Site at Knoebels, and coming across Rt 487 between Benton and Bloomsburg gas is only $1.87!!! So any of you out there in that general area or may be traveling through there, stop in its about 30 to 35 cents cheaper than the rest of the area.

This was with my 1968 Mustang. Anything less than 92-93 octane and the 289 does start to ping. I don't drive this car much (only a little over 400 miles last year), and only to car shows and such. The gas prices won't affect me to much with this vehicle. I also find I can't run anything below 89 octane in my 1987 Caprice with a 307. If I put 87 octane in that it doesn't want to shut off. You turn the key off and the motor diesels. My everyday (commuter) car and the one I put almost 20,000 miles a year on is my 4 cylinder 1997 Camry and that runs excellent on 87 octane and that's all I ever put in it.
When I used to drive the Caprice everyday I went through $90 a week in gas and that was 3 years ago when prices were much cheaper. I don't want to think what it would cost now! :ahh:

Let's see, most of us are now into the 1999 rookie era of prices (starts with $2.09). The prices have already passed the "original to 1998" era. I just pray it never hits the area of the 2000 rookies (that would start at $3.36 a gallon, and we're essentially screwed at that point).

One of my extemely liberal professors was telling us why gas was so high.

He believes the oil companies are taking the oil from Iraq and putting it into storage. He claims, into dryed up oil reservoirs in Texas. I'm not sure if it's true, but it does make sense...

There's a shortage of oil because there's not enough tankers to move it all to US refineries and into storage. The shortage of crude oil is driving the price up.

Diesel is more exspensive? Around here regular is about $2.11. And diesel is only about $1.80-$1.90.

Gas around detroit is currently staying in a range of FEDS to Thunderchickens (2.01 - 2.17) It would be nice to see 469 in the gas price, but then again only is $4.69 got you about 3-4 gallons (well in this day, about 2.5 gallons would be nice for $4.69)
I don't know much about the diesel price, I haven't checked.

Well, I certainly hope that gas prices don't reach our team number - $11.68 for a gallon of gas would be a tad excessive IMHO. ;)

If gas prices are this high for our vehicles I would hate to see how much gas is for aircraft. They must have has some hike in price. Right?

Don't forget propane prices are going up too. I just paid $14 to fill a 20# barbeque tank. Last time I did this last year it was $9.50 at the same place.
Home heating oil prices are going up along with natural gas. Trucking companies are also charging more for delivery now.

This is a far greater effect than just gas prices. Once one price goes up it keeps going down the line effecting other prices.

Is oil-based lubricant going up too? Some kinds are from Crude Oil.

$1.16 a gallon..thats about what it was around here when I first got my car 4 years ago. Now it's between $1.89 for regular if I am down south a bit at by my girlfriends house, to over $2.90  for premium at pricey stations in Arlington.

This is where I am glad my car still gets 28ish MPG at 14 years old. When I really run it, that will drop to about 18 or so. Just another reason to drive easier. :)

Premium at the highest stations 'round Syracuse have been close to $2.50-$2.60

Sucks that my family drives nothing but minivans that get 20 mpg highway, 12-15 mpg city....... :(

Truthfully i am looking into a segway for this problem, with recent increases it does not look like it will decrease anytime soon. I would sugegst if you are goign to look at getting a segway try to interconnect with segwaychat.com and maybe you will find someone selling a segway for 3 grand or so. whatever you think though i do think a segway in a few years will save my pocket alot compared to gas burning a hole in my pocket...

First off, this isn't to knock Mr. Dessingue... but more to... throw some ideas out there. This is perhaps a little off topic... but I'm going to say it anyway.

First off, the prices will go down, and soon. I define "soon" by the end of the summer. Gas prices always peak in the summer, and they go down in the fall and winter. Here's a graph for those of you that like pictures:

Now, let's talk about the Segway for a second. 6-10 miles on a single charge. That means that you're not going any place that's farther than 5 miles if you don't want to do some walking on the way home. If you're getting 15 miles to the gallon with your car, and gas prices have jumped by 40 cents a gallon... your round trip cost is an extra 27 cents over what it did when gas was "cheap." (This is neglecting the small cost to charge your Segway.)

Assuming that you stop driving your car completely on these 5 mile back and forth trips, you need to drive 2,175 of them to make up the cost of your used $2,900 Segway at $2.00 a gallon of gas, in your 15 miles/gallon car.

And if you could be driving at 30 mph instead of the 10 mph riding on a Segway, you'd have saved an extra 1087.5 HOURS. You need to put a value on your time.

I guess my conclussion is that I think buying a Segway to "save money" is difficult task to accomplish unless you're willing to wait QUITE a while.

It's a cool toy to zip around on, cool to do some repetative warehouse tasks on, deliver the mail, or maybe even to zip to the local store to pick up a loaf of bread, but it's just not the transportation replacement that it's decked out to be. It's niche market of people who need to travel over a mile (but under 5 miles) repeatedly is very small in the general public. I think that we can admit that if this wasn't Dean's invention, it'd be long forgotten by now my the vast majority of FIRSTers, and it certainly won't be impacting the temporary gas spike that happens every summer in the United States.

And those are my comments of the day.

Matt

Matt-- You have some fine points....

But-- i'd like to add the cost of auto insurance...

I own a segway, not a car... i do NOT pay $2000-2500 a year in auto insurance.

I have access to a car during the summer months (while i'm at home), but i try to use it as sparingly as possible, as the cost of gas is so high. I get around town just fine on the segway, and i've driven 200+ fewer miles than i would have without the segway... all the little trips to the store and the library and such add up...

So in conclusion, the segway replaces my car during the winter months, and it aids in my saving money during the summer months. And about the "time" factor.... any time spent having fun gliding on the segway is free... as in-- there is nothing else i'd rather be doing than going someplace on the segway... well... *almost* nothing else :)

This solution won't work for everyone as Matt pointed out, but don't discount it!

Tom

Who tries to go around and say "first off" twice?

Unacceptable.

There's a shortage of oil because there's not enough tankers to move it all to US refineries and into storage. The shortage of crude oil is driving the price up.

I heard today that about $10/bbl of the price of crude can be attributed to the "fear factor" resulting from the mess in Iraq, the recent attacks in Saudi Arabia, etc. The same interviewee said that about 30% of the price of gasoline is for the crude that it's made from. The biggest reason that gas prices are increasing is that demand is increasing due to all the high consumption vehicles in the US driven increasing numbers of miles, and the rapidly increasing number of cars in China and India. Diesel is cheaper than gas, even though it takes more crude to make, because the demand has not increased as rapidly as the demand for gasoline and refinery capacity for diesel is more in line with demand.

More on-topic is that, today, I filled my VW Jetta TDI with "Children of the Swamp" diesel. That's 179. I got only 46mpg on this tank which took me about 600 miles.

Of course I must add:

Segways are awesome! Around cities, for commuting, and here's and idea... if you could commute to work on a Segway (suggested maximum travel of 8-miles one way), you could rent a car to use on the weekends and save a lot of money in the long run.

I just learned of a few more used Segs are available for 3k-3.5k, let me know if you're interested.
