History behind...

What's the history behind the "drive it like you stole it" saying? I remember when I first joined FIRST that our driver (Matt) wrote that on our bot. And I never understood why. I don't know if it something that stems from C.D., or if anyone actually knows.

Hehehehe... I hope this doesn't turn into another "Which team started it" like the whole Heeeeyyy thing turned into.

Anyways, as for my team we saw it on a car's bumper sticker and just added the word robot to it.

Then a few years back, I think it was Matt Leese (maybe) that was making some FIRST inspired T-Shirts with funny and cool bot related quotes on it, and he asked me if he could use that slogan "Drive your robot like you stole it" cause it was in my signature at the time.

I said sure, and he had some shirts made up with that slogan on it through edit: geek-gear.com and I bought one of the shirts. I still have it to this day.

Anyways, the whole "drive it like you stole it" is basically saying, go ahead and drive aggressively. Maybe not the most gracious or professional slogan ever, but.. meh. As long as you got a good pit crew, go ahead and drive it to the extremes - just be ready to fix it after a match.

I believe that it's a generic saying to drive really fast/aggresively, and I'm quite sure that it did not start from FIRST at all, sadly. :(

Wasn't me. I don't think I've ever made FIRST inspired t-shirts. I do seem to remember someone making FIRST inspired t-shirts a few years back.

Matt

I know a non-FIRSTer who has a shirt that says it .. so I dont think it is just a FIRST thing ...

Oops, sorry Matt. Now that I see your pic I know it wasn't you.. If I saw the person's pic here on CD I would know who it was, that's for sure. I think I recall them being from NH. (But of course, who else would make FIRST inspired T-Shirts but someone from FIRST's home state.. lol)

:D

To me - since I'm a huge gear head (and a grease monkey) - I've always believed in that saying (hey - what good is a vehicle if you don't abuse the junk out of it?). So everything that I drive (ask anyone that has gotten a ride from me) I drive quite hard.

Thus - "Drive it like you stole it" slogan that I chose for my self - and I even have it on my toolbox at the dealership! :)

P.S. - Who do you think tests all the new vehicles that we get in when they roll off the truck?

Amen to that one :)

That's cool though :). I just never really understood why you always had that on the bots and stuff. Thanks.
