Questions about Dreamweaver...
 

Last month, I posted a thread asking about the programs that teams use to create their websites. Most of the response I got was about the program "Dreamweaver." I was wondering, is this a user-friendly program where the user doesn't have to know too much HTML or is it all based on HTML? I don't really know HTML, and I use Adobe GoLive for my website.

Should I use Dreamweaver instead of GoLive? (If so, how much does it cost and where can I find it?)

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Dreamweaver is part of the Macromedia suite of applications. Go to www.macromedia.com for a free 30 day trial. You don't need to know TONS of HTML, but you should know some.

Dreamweaver is a nice program, but ive never used GoLive so i really can't give you a good comparason. If you are headed off to college next year, I know Macromedia has a student edition of Macromedia Studio with Flash, Fireworks, Free Hand and Dreamweaver in one package for around 100 bucks (or at least thats what my school's bookstore charged) I tell you waht, that 100 bucks forked out for it was well worth it.

I'm going to have to agree with DJ. I had to make a website for my Freshman year english class at Purdue and my teacher (who heavily uses Dreamweaver) suggested that the whole class try it out. I got my hands on a copy of both Dreamweaver and Fireworks and turned out a website "homemade" graphics and all in less than 2 weeks. If you can get a copy of both of them you can have seemless integration.

Mind you, there are free HTML WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get visual, Microsoft Word-like) editors out there all over the place. You could also try the Mozilla Organization's Composer, which comes with the Mozilla App Suite, also free. There is also Microsoft Frontpage, which comes with Office, but do your readers a favour and only use it if it's the latest version of Office. As for Dreamweaver, excellent program; it can be used by novices and experts alike. The only disadvantage it has over any multipurpose web language/HTML editor is that lovely price tag.

I love Dreamweaver... If you can't find it locally for less than $100 try these guys: http://www.k12connected.com they have it for $93 and the whole Studio MX for $187 (http://www.k12connected.com/images/PDF's/MailerWeb.pdf) This is where I buy all of my software and it is educational pricing. They just require you to fax them something that states that you are a full time students (HS, college, whatever) in the past I have used a report card, etc... PM me if you have more questions!

Micro Computers is located in WA but they ship all over the country.

I'm guessing you can probably get a copy at CompUSA, Circuit City, Micro Center or Best Buy.

CompUSA has it for <<cough>> $470 <<cough>>. For reference, it's $399 on the macromedia website, but $99 for qualified educational users so if you're a student you DEFINETELY want to go that route. Try the bookstore at your local college.

Speaking as a rookie web pager designer (if that) I found Dreamweaver very easy to use. I followed the tutorial and then made my own website. It has been easy to change around and modify. If you look at my site, please excuse all of the Flash and Giffs (way too many). I made my site for fun and info, not to win awards. One thing to remember, alot of people still use dialup which can make certain things real slow loading.

There are also a lot of good books out there that are dedicated to Dreamweaver. Right now I'm reading "How to do Everything with Dreamweaver MX 2004."
