Naming the thing

What do you call the thing that this forum is about? It doesn't have to be official, just what you call it generally.

Re: Naming the thing

It's called Robovation.

Astronouth7303 06-02-2004 09:07 PM

Re: Naming the thing

I know that's officially. But that's not the question. Offial announcements are different from what-everyone-calls-it. I shall forever call it the EDU Bot. (and Robovation's lame)
I noticed you didn't vote.

Re: Naming the thing

Anyone have access to a EDU Bot kit? What does it say on the top?

Re: Naming the thing

For those of you like me who still call it the EDU Bot, do you say "edu" as in education or each letter separatley E - D - U? I prefer the latter.

Re: Naming the thing

I do word, but some of our mentors do letter.

greencactus3 06-02-2004 10:31 PM

Re: Naming the thing

we say edubot..<eju-bot> its because thats what our mentor said it was when he brought the kit in. no other reason.

Re: Naming the thing

Ed-jew-bot.

Re: Naming the thing

I don't think any of us would get sued for using the term EDU-Bot around the shop or on the forums here (I hope not anyways), but if you are writing a paper for the news or the team's website, I would use the new name of Robovations.

Elgin - Who obviously still uses the term EDU-Bot (pronounced just as BillFred showed the pronunciation right above.)

And who also remembers the last ditch effort of Disney in 2002 to show how in tune they were with us "Robotics People" by calling us Roboteers...
Yeah, umm... that didn't fly too well either, now did it?

Well in that case...

Heh, I was right. I totally called this back when the "Robovation" thread first opened.

Re: Naming the thing

I'm still gonna call it the Ed-Ju-Bot. After 2 years of talking about it almost everyday for 6 weeks, it is kind of implanted in my brain. I mean cmon.. what if they tried to change the name of "FIRST" to "MARG: Magical Autonomous Robot Games" I would still call it FIRST

MOEmaniac 06-03-2004 08:57 AM

Re: Naming the thing

I've always know it as the EDUbot.

ChrisH 06-03-2004 10:28 AM

Re: Naming the thing

I still refer to IT as the EDUbot. The Robovation name inhales audibly. When they announced the name change I had to reread the announcement several times to figure out just what it was about. Robovation gives no clue.

But since there has to be a change, BetaBot works much better for me. Afterall, that's what it's for. Being a Beta robot.

You have to know FIRST is a good idea, it succeeds in spite of lousy marketing. This is just another example.

Re: Naming the thing

Definetly eju-bot... Robovation is too hard to remember and doesn't quite mean the same thing to me... :)

Re: Naming the thing

I have always just called it, Edu-Robotics Kit

Our Edu-bot (as it is called) prefers to be called Willard.

Re: Naming the thing

EDUbot. I wish FIRST changes the name from Robovation to something else which clearly tells us that it is and "EDUbot". Robovation is just too long and takes too many muscles to say:p ... and is hard to remember...

If somebody came up to me "did you guys build a robovation bot?" I'd got blank for a while.. and then realize, but if they said "Did you guys build a EDUbot?", then I would give an INSTANT reply... oh well

I agree with you 100%, I mean, what in the world is a "Robovation bot"? It sounds so different than what others have always called it. Although i do believe that it'll just take some getting used to. Or, we could just keep calling it the "Edu-bot".

Re: Naming the thing

I call it the EDUbot or the BetaBot .. it alternates ..

For those who do not know, the Canadian Kickoff has a competition using the EDUbot Kit, and it is called the BetaBot there ...

Re: Naming the thing

Actually, last season when we got the EDUrobot, our adivsor, Mr Kelly decided it would be a really good idea to get all the documentation and package it together into one bindser so everyone could easily see it all. He got all that printed off and hole-punched, and everything, but the binder was just too plain for Mr Kelly's taste and he made up a spiffy cover to go onto it. One problem. Instead of typing EDUrobot, he hit EUDrobot. Not too funny to someone who wasn't there, but we got a few laughs, and to this day it is still the EUDrobot (Pronounced YOOJ-ro-bot).

Re: Naming the thing

The thing is an EDUbot, and always will be...

unless.
In Business, all companies that have a name or product name longer than 3 sylables they are usually abbreviated or given a different name. like US First (you say it all cuz its 3 sylables. and other stuff like that. So, maybe BetaBot could take the place, but Ro-bo-va-tion? thats a long one.

At least thats what i've noticed.

Re: Naming the thing

EDUbot, the Nationals, and US FIRST (sorry Non-US teams :( ) just learned it that way and prolly will never call it anything different. Just like a mentor used to call a deburring tool, the whirlygig....it just sticks. Also, whirlygig....what a sweet name for a tool.

To be politically correct, I call it the EDU Bot, but I prefer 'minibot.'
