What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

Hi all!

Its friday, I am bored, so I decided to be a little creative. Here are a few equations that you may or may not be able to relate to.

What I learned in FIRST this year...

1. Gearbox X 2 = Heavy

2. Einstien Field Sound System + Curie Field Sound System = Bargled

3. (Robots + Steps) = Tipsy = (Robot + Ball)

4. Beatty + Hammond = Gold Metal ^ 4

5. (Contraversy / 2) + Gracious Professionalism = Cheesy Poofs and Kingman

6. Dave Lavery + Pimp Hat = Funny! (Thats Pimp Dave)

7. Bowling + 121 = New Shirt for Andy

8. Northeast - Defense = Midwest ;)

9. Kindergarten = Hard

10. I = JVN

Hope ya liked! Anyone else have any good ones?

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

11. Curie + Mark Leon = t3h awesome
12. East coast - good teams = west coast
(Yeah, there were plenty of good west coast teams, and we're from the west coast, so don't flame me. I was just surprised that 11 of the 12 teams that made it to Einstein were from east of the Mississippi.)

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

13. 3 weeks of design + 1 week of waiting for parts = 2 weeks of build=not good cuz we get kicked out @ 11

14. not having a robot for UTC scrimmage + using last year's robot = winning it? (strange but true)

15. totally reorganizing= a lot of work for years to come, not just this past year

16. hanging onto the past + not being ready for the future = trouble in team

Mike M. 04-06-2004 16:24

17. Fantasy FIRST = awesome

18. Andy Grady = Hanson Lover :D

19. 162lbs a few days from ship = many many holes to be drilled

20. 20,000 students + 900 teams + robots + Gracious professionalism = FIRST

Lisa Perez 04-06-2004 17:14

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

21. 20(Late Night Building) + Red Bull = Robot
22. 3(Day at Nationals) + Cheering = 0(Voice)
23. One Team + [(Other Team) - Sponsorship] = Compromise + (True Teamwork)

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

24. 3-jointed arm mechanism + programming it to respond to model arm controller = hard and time consuming

25. 3-jointed arm mechanism + programming it to respond to model arm controller + incorrectly bringing in the analog input and not knowing it = extremely hard and time consuming

26. food tickets + spending them = no change

27. crazy senior + tiki mask + elevator + chair + duct tape = photo opportunity

27. Mr. Cokeley + stroke medications = idea for "cool squad"

28. freshman + battery + curiosity = :ahh:

Tom Bottiglieri 04-06-2004 17:32

29. 486 laptop + programming robot = not gonna work :mad:

30. Big Inflatable Balls = NOT for jumping on :(

31. Looking for fasteners the first time rather than ripping off old bot < repairing old bot after season :ahh:

32. High Speed = much more fun that low speed.

opnickc 04-06-2004 17:43

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

33. 67 + 406 = a whole lotta fun*
34. 30" ball - 5" at nationals = bot that can't grab ball
35. 50 floor aviary + parachute guy + glass elevator = cool
36. completely open hotel inside + many FIRST teams = "heeeeeeeeey!" + midnight
37. 50 floor staricase = 2student + mentor + running up
38. Doubler ball + 1241's basket = awesome play
39. 340 + 1126 = awesome alliance

*406's sponsor, Denso, left them this year. They paid financially, but provided no mentorship. In the past, the Denso engineers had built the bot, so none of the students really knew how to build one. 406 asked for help, and 67 responded by letting them work in our shop with our mentors. In a way, they became part of our team. It was a great experience, for the first time they designed and built their robot, and won their first FIRST trophey. Plus, even though we weren't at the detroit regional, we got to go so we could cheer for them. Go Mustangs!

Few things I learnt:

Mentor + stroke = team in chaos;

Students + wrong information = dangerous situation;

Students + Stubborn = bad impression on mentors;

Good friends + Competitions = FUN;

I learnt more than what words can express just being around FIRST, team 25, and especially other teams. I feel blessed. Thank you all:)

Re: What I Learned In FIRST This Year...

as useful as duct tape is, there are some alternatives.. yeat some applications truely NEED duct tape.

pneumatic tires sometimes bounce in the way you want them to, and sometimes dont... and become a painful memory to some innocent builders.

always have your main breaker switch in an easily accessible location on the robot during testing.. especially when testing an autonomous program that a blind programmer made.. sometimes things dont work out as planned and one of us has to run around in circles around a 130 lbs robot spinning at full speed with a VERY dangerous 6 foot arm swinging around in order to reach into the robot to switch it off.
oh, and when its a four wheel drive robot, its even harder to stop the robot for if it was 2 wheel drive, you just need to tip it onto its casters.

Even better, use a dongle. :D. Saves a lot of time, and easy to use.

I'd change the "*" to a "^". :eek:

Other than that I heartily agree. Dirty laundry needs to be dealt with at home, by the family, not by or in front of strangers.
